I'm kind of getting in to the Mossie these days. Checked out this website (http://www.military.cz/british/air/war/fighter/mosquito/mosquito_en.htm) and saw a comment that caught my eye:
The bomber version of the Mosquito could deliver the same bomb-load to distant targets as the four-engined Boeing B-17.
The grid on that very same webpage doesn't seem to support the claim. But, irregardless, any chance that you guys (HTC) might consider adding another Mossie to the hangar? I don't think out current Mossie offers any loadout like the B-17. hehe
:)
Thanks!

The quote refers to the ability of a Mk XVI Mossie B with bulged bomb bay to deliver a 4000lb cookie................
of
No 692 Squadron
The squadron was formed at Graveley, Huntingdonshire, on 1st January 1944. It was equipped with Mosquito light bombers and became part of the force of fast, high-flying night raiders- the Light Night Striking Force of No 8 (PFF) Group. The Light Night Striking Force made a name for itself with its regular journeys to Berlin, hitting the German capital again and again with 4,000lb. "cookie" bombs.
more info at
http://www.raf.mod.uk/bombercommand/h692.html
The point being that B17's attacking Berlin were also limited to 4000lb pay loads.

Yes I have always thought it odd this game didnt have the bomber version Mossie - perhaps they are afraid of what a cloud of bombsighted Mossies would do to the MA?

The Mosquito B.Mk IV would see very little use. With only four 500lb bombs and a top speed no better than the Mosquito FB.Mk VI we have now it would be both vulnerable and unable to inflict real damage.
A Mosquito B.Mk XVI on the other hand might very well need to be perked. a 4,000lb bomb (three in a formation option) and 375mph cruise speed (faster than a laden Ar234) would make it a very effect strike tool.

Is there a variant of the Mossie that perhaps carries a similar bomb load but suffers from a noted weakness? If so, perhaps that could be the un-perked yet heavier Mossie that we're looking for.

Well, there were a few Mosquito B.Mk IV Specials made that had the bulged bomb bay for the 4,000lb bomb. They struggled to get off the ground. I have a quote regarding the difference between a B.IV Special and a B.XVI on take off at home somewhere. There is also the Mosquito B.Mk IX and B.Mk IX Special. The problem is that the B.Mk IV Special and B.Mk IX Special (frankly, the B.Mk IX in general) is that very few were built. Really what we should get is a Mosquito B.Mk IV for 1942, 1943 and 1944 ops and a Mosquito B.Mk XVI for 1944 and 1945 ops.
A Mosquito NF.Mk II and a Mosquito NF.Mk XIX or Mosquito NF.Mk XXX would also be a very nice addition and with those four we'd have the Mosquito fleet filled out. The Mosquito FB.Mk XVIII was rare, and Pyro said that the 57mm cannon could be used in ways that would have overly negative effects on bombers.

Ar 234 does about 400-405 laden but thats at 20k. IIRC Mossies best speeds are ~15k, at least the models I've looked at. The extra 5k and 30 mph does reduce the types of aircraft that could do an intercept. [edit, I see that figure above for 375mph cruise at 37k, but I really, really doubt thats while carrying that huge bomb.]
-
Rasker,
When I tested the Ar234 I only got 370mph while laden. It was a long time ago though, and I don't recall the altitude I tested at.
The Mosquito B.Mk XVI had a Merlin 76 and a Merlin 77, high altitude engines. Also, that 375 was a fast cruise setting, not a MIL setting. It would be faster in AH. Probably about 390-400mph at 25,000 or so.
-
234 maxes out at 20k speedwise, 470 unladen, 400-405 laden, according to both the web help chart and my experience.
With 4000 extra pounds on board that Mossie's max speeds are going to have to drop, cruise, mil or wep, at whatever alt. That much extra weight is going to add to one type of drag, induced or parasitic, I forget which.
-
All the mossie speed figures from Boscombe in the PRO documents I've seen are quoted for 90% of takeoff weight. Might even have the XVI stuff somewhere, though I was after fighter stuff when I was at Kew, will look.

Maybe HTC can have it ready for the next patch, cause the good Lord knows we barely have any allied aircraft to choose from now as it is...
