Title: The Aviator
Post by: Shuckins on February 04, 2005, 10:42:08 PM
Just got back from the theater ... and all I can say is that this was a great movie...on many levels.   One of the best on-screen bios I've seen in a long time.

It should garner a number of oscars.

Your thoughts.

I was wondering, in the trailers, they show him in some sort of P-38 looking plane. What's the deal there?

It was a prototype aircraft...developed for fast high-altitude reconnaissance.

Only one was ever built.

IIRC, Hughes had the patent on the Plexiglass turrets on Buffs.  I could be wrong though.

So even if it has Leotardo Di Crapio as the lead is a good movie?

it was pretty good.

not sure that i would rank it as one of the top bio's though.  but thats probably just a matter of taste and not a good guage of the quality of the film.  i enjoyed it.

favorite bios?

ray, rocked the house.
that old elvis movie that they play on television from time to time. (pure cheese, but i always stop to watch it....i think it was a young kurt russell.
nixon.  thought hopkins did a great job.
patton. (of course)
citizen cohn, james woods is exceptional.

i was disapointed, maybe because i expected to see more flying scenes,
this is a pure bios movie with some highlights, i doubt
i will watch it a second time, though.

And no one has even brought up Kate Beckingsale yet.

She looked yummy.

I really did like the movie although I don't really consider Hollywood treatments of biographies as a true bio, just an interpretation.

The opening scene with mommy was pretty disturbing!

I liked it...., and my Girlfriend liked it...  The recreations of the planes he flew were great.  But... some of the (hard to describe this) flight 'physics' were a little 'off'.  The R1 'diving' straight at the ground after running out of fuel as an example.  Just small stuff like that.

Plus, whoever played Kathryn Hepburn was great....

It well worth the money.....

When he was growing up in Texas there was some type of desease out break and his Mother kept washing him all the time to 'drive off the germs'.   Or so I read.....

It was Ok but a bit long and what was going on with the colour at the begining? Blue peas feaked me out! The Aviator got rave reviews but was average in my opinion though I agree Kate beckinsale is a babe.

I went to see Alexander the following week. That got crap reviews but I thought it was outstanding.

Yes, Kate as Eva Garner was the only thing worth seeing in this movie.   She is FINE!  I was expecting more from an Oscar contender.  The women in this movie did a great job.

From IMDB.com:

Scorsese designed each year in the film to look just the way a color film from that time period would look. Achieved mainly through digitally enhanced postproduction, Scorsese recreated the look of Cinecolor and two-strip Technicolor. Watch in particular for the scene where Hughes meets Errol Flynn in the club. Hughes is served precisely placed peas on a plate, and they appear blue or turquoise

I think thats bull. I never saw old films with the colour that far out. Seemed a bit over the top to me. But he's Scorcese he can get away with any old nonsense.

Kate Beckinsale mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm:)
