Maybe I am preaching to the choir, so for those of you who this does not apply to you can move onto another post. And this is not so much a gripe as it is an observation.
For the most part - i'd say better then 75 % of those who play politeness and honor are concepts that we can grasp and maybe even sometimes live by.
I can't tell you how many times when you either get a victory or are the victory, and have sent a - u just hear dead space. Again, maybe it is me - and quite possibly the demographic has changed to include a public that is not open to the idea of giving respect or having it given.
So I think - as a point of note it is important especially for the old hands to educate the new guys on proper etiquette and what is respectful and what is not.
It would be a small victory - but you never know. The person who's being educated might learn something about himself and treating others with respect and that reflects better on him not only in AH, but in how he lives life.
My 2 cents.

if i get killed in a furball..NO SALUTE
if i get killed in a 1 vs 1..then ya get the "S"
megadud
-
I know how and even experienced at least 40
from the Knits one nite. All you have to do is take a 262 to pork troops. Get pinged by Ack, freak out and auger infront of them. Amazing how respectful they are to ya on CH 200. It was a truely amazing site to see. God I love this Game....LOL....Thanks Knits for showing your Love after my Great display of flying ability....I Laughed for an hour after that one.
-
Sorry, I'm not buying it.
You fight a good fight, win or lose you can get a out of me. That is respect. I respect you for trying.
You come into a 3-4-5+ on 1 for an easy cherrypick and expect to get a " Amazing kill man, superb flying", you need to dislodge your head from your ass.
Note Wolf, this isn't directed at you, unless you usually do the above.
Just playing the "respect" game doesn't cut it, in my opinion.
-
Well, i don't define blasting buff's from 2.5k with my 38's rockets are cherrying - but all things being equal, was not proposing a 1 size fits all criteria for a salute either.
-
I don't think Wofly meant throw out a
when ya get cherry picked while out numbered. I think he meant more during an even fight. Now if I get ganged and die and the guy killing me me. I will him back if I see it. I take it as he was ing me for trying with the odds against me. I agree I probably wouldn't give the first in that situation, making the cherry picker think he is all wonderful for jumping me. Sure he did his job in killing me, which is the part of the game. Kill the enemy.
Anyway I think you know what I am trying to say. Over all I think he is just saying in a general sense he would like to see more respect in the game as a whole. Instead of when someone kills another (no matter 1 v 1 or ganged) the guy dieing starts calling the victor all kinds of childish names. OK ya got ganged or Cherry picked, it's part of the game. No, you don't need to them for it. One also doesn't have to throw fits on 200 and call others names either. I think that is what he is trying to say. Atleast I think it is.

Hondo..

Some don't tune 200 so a salute on 200 not ansewered could be due to this.
I for 1 don't believe in giving Salutes unless really were deserving. And Saluteing a man you shot down can be sometimes taken wrong way.
Example if i'm in Bombers and a enemy makes great attacks and gets 2 or all 3 ( fester only one to get all 3 alone at high alt) then I'l salute. But to have 2 or 3 guys came st8 up 6 blasting away and get all 3 while dying I would not salute or return a salute. I wouldn't salute a suicider getting a cv or if on same team wouldn't give a wtg.
My own opinion Is if you give a salute everytime you kill or get killed they become pointless. I'll salute Ghosth, Dadrabit, Fbjoker, Fester, Shane, dmdcoach, GHI, busher, Fraiz and few others based on thier sportsmanship and or contributions to game.
I've had 4 guys come in HO me all 4 and 1 will salute. This is not a salute to show in kind .
So final point is I'll salute but when I think its right time place not because someone else saluted first........................ .................
-
i dont think any one was suggesting that one should salute even if they dont mean it.
salute who and what you like.
-
Wolfala, we had a little 'discussion' sometime last week... its frustration on my part. Not losing or winning but seeing the general decline of the community in here where many could care less about history and are more into the gaming the game.
First and foremost the general play in the arenas has gotten worse. Ten guys attacking one undefended base, while ten guys from the other team attack another undefended field a couple sectors away.
Lastly, ACM isn't one high speed pass, HO, and haul ass.
-
Don't forget that a lot of people squelch 200 because of all the mouth feces. They might not even get your salute. I've sent
's for my squaddies before because they just don't see them.

OPHAs!!!!!
One Pass, Haul Ass!!
:aok
not only do some squelch (or rather *not* tune, since 200 isn't any default channel) 200, but some sqeulch ch 1 and ch 6 as well.
-
Oh, I give the one finger salute a lot, just doesn't show up in the text bar :)
Actually just kidding, I rarely if ever get po'd, I know my limitations, I don't take it seriously enuff, I get jumped a lot cuz I'm usually typing smartazz comments to squadies and countrymen with a sense of humor as sick as mine :)
I play this game, cuz to me it is a game, if it ever got that serious for me, I would be looking for another game, it is a relaxation fun time for me....shut up Jackal .....(cut him off b-4 the smartazz comment could come in :) )
If I get kilt by someone, I will type on 200 - gk -
If it is a known good stick - I will type - bastage :)
Thats cuz if I knew he was around I would have been avoiding the area like the plague..lol

Respect is to NOT rub in your kills.
Salute the looser of a fight if it was a damn good one... but dont rub in overwhelming victories... dont rub it in when you owned someone...
Beeing a gentleman is an attitude you dont put it on with a salute and then take it off... Its your attitude not single actions that determins if your a gentleman or not..
Actions can be tought. Do this do that. But that doesnt mean crap.
To raise a gentleman you have to coach/mentor attitude. If a person with the wrong attitude is thought a few actions it doesnt help to make him a gentleman. His attitude is still wrong and he will still act as a pooptwit in the next situation which he hasnt been thought how to act in.
Even a trained chimp can learn to type .s Delirium (no pun intended Deli just example) but does that make him a gentleman?
Most people that salute in game do it like trained chimps which results in them insulting the enemy. This is very unfortunate. Saluting is a great way to show respect to a pilot that beat you. NOTE to a pilot that beat YOU.
Beeing humble in victory is just as important, if not more important, then beeing humble in defeat.

1. The guy isnt tuned to 200
2. The guy didnt see you
3. The guy is feeling lazy and just didnt feel like typing.
4. The guy is too busy throwing stuff around the room because he screwed up and knows it.
5. The guy is a ****, and unless he wins, you are just lucky, there is no possible way he could have lost, and will never dumb luck.
Whatever the reason...it matters little. Take pleasure in your victory...he knows who won.
-
Late to the party, but I guess I'm of the opinion the overuse of
has in some ways cheapened it.
I'd think it would be for something above and beyond, not the average 'fight' in the MA. If I see a guy survive a furball and walk out of it having killed a bunch and then he rtbs and lands em. That might warrant a or WTG!. But if I see a guy vulch a bunch of the same guy trying to take off at an undefended field and rtb and land em, I don't see that as a WTG or . That's the time for a "boy you sure worked hard to get those kills didn't ya?", comment :)
Some guy lands two kills and gets the WTG! or . Isn't that what we're supposed to be doing?
I'm all for being respectful and enjoying the time when I fly, but it is just a game. I don't need someone to tell me what a great job I'm doing having fun :)
I think folks respond to fast to reward too little.

I tune 200 and salute someone who shoots me down with a good move or a good shot.
I dont salute people i shoot down unless I know them.
Otherwise it is too open to insult on the other side. If I really thought it was a cool fight and I won I will private him and tell him so.
I think too many use as a system kill counter.
-
I'll put out a
or a GK (as the case may be) on a well flown engagement....whats funny is how often I end up saluting a guy who got nada cause some lala or nikki dweeb came screaming in on the end of 5 minute "sweaty palm/stiff neck" rumble to wax one of us...or in one case both (nailed me, killshot his "teammate")......
-
I salute people that kill me if they worked to get it. I never salute the guys that get me while taking off.
I would salute the guys I shoot down, but I am not completely sure if that is the right thing to do. I really do not want to p off someone by mistake.
One time I fought USgolfer, heh he schooled me in about a min and a half, He saluted me and that felt good. I thought hey I actually may have impressed him. So I don't know you guys tell me.
I saluted a guy that had to hit my panzer like 6 times to get the kill. I have never saluted someone I have killed while in a tank, mostly cause there usually is not a lot of time to do this.
So in short there is some confusion on my end and probably in the minds of some of the other new guys what is right and what is wrong.

rod:

Here is how to send a so EVERYONE in the arena can see it (including the intended reciever), no matter what channels they have tuned or squelched.
Open any text buffer and type:
.s playerID
This shows on ARENA WIDE channel:
playerID
(Note there is no "200" in front of the , it wasnt sent on ch 200, it was sent on ARENA channel.)
Also in returning a the player who 'd you can see your reply if he has channel 200 squelched.
If a player you on ARENA channel for all the world to see dont ya think you should return the respects in the same open forum?

Sounded like you want a return to your salute?
Sometimes i will not return a salute because im still in combat... and return it later on. Or i miss the text buffer totally.
So when it is not returned it might just be the guy that you saluted is still flying, no longer online or didnt see it.
-
As long as I think the kill was recieved under fair terms and Im not too pissed off I will salute.
-
Knowing full well this is a GAME only I tend to take it less seriously then life. (I know...I'm wrong....this COULD be life.)
Anyway.....during the many years of online simming......I've come to know many people friends and foes alike that I not only have respect for their ability to play well....but also for not taking it seriously and generally being a fun person to joust with. Many in AH were past AW combatants and many are from Warbirds and many I just met in AH. I like jousting verbally with them also (tongue in cheek) and saluting them for a successful run....even if they are the enemy. Sorta like congratulating the Victor or loser of a Sports event that you've participated in. Show you've appreciated their effort......and made it fun. Thats what AH is about....fun......if it ain't...What the hell are we doing here?

No Faux requested, sir.
No poster so far has indicated that an undeserved should be rendered.
But if the encounter got your blood pumping or made the work-a-day blandness of *g a s p* "real life" fade for a bit then its mearly an exchange of respect between friendly enemies who had fun in the virtual skies.

Oh, and btw, I only
when I lose or to return a from a player that sends me one.
It can be considered poor sportsmanship to the loser as if being smug in victory.

If its a 1-1 and the opponent showed skill and was not flying planes i consider as being easymode crutchrides he gets a salute in priv tell.

Excellent replies so far guys. Tex - I learned the most from yours - very insightful.

I'll give
's to anyone that I had a good fight with. they don't back then ok. They do then Ok. Sometimes we may even talk about it for a few lines of text if they are on 200.
If I anyone it is out of respect I promise ya.

I will .S or
who initiates it in fact I got couple and a .S from the rooks tonight, not that I deserved it, heck i'm a horrible pilot its usually luck when I kill someone. So I did it back to them 1v1 they were good fights.

If I shot down someone in what I considered a good fight. I often fire off a simple so quickly that the said guy has no doubt I am saluting him. By not broadcasting their name, there is no misintepretation that you are being cocky or a wise arse.
Or you can just tell them "great fight " or "nice flying". In my experience often the resulting exchange ends with salutes.
-
the 'faux
' is just a means of friendly communication between friends. if you dont have any friends in AH, i suppose an could seem sour...
i have never given an without meaning it in kindness and respect.
i think Tilt's quote in Shane's sig somes it up for me.
if I've fought hard against someone i'll happily call it off when they are no longer able to fight, but never expect them to do the same for me through obligation.
losing and not letting it drag you down is one very small step.
winning and not taking the 'coup de grace' is a very liberating feeling and something that takes a certain mindset to accomplish.
I remember in AH1 i was in my 'crutchride' spitV and got bouced by two zekes.
the first zeke dived on me and his wingman stayed 2-3k above us, clearly not engaging.
we fought it out for 3 mins or so, this zeke and I, eventually he got my oil and engine in one hit. instead of crawling up on my tail to finish me he broke off and climbed to rejoin his wingman.
He was one of the Japanese early crew, i forget his name.
He typed three words:
'land safe spitfire'
that was a defining moment for me in regard to what AcesHigh should be.
And of how a gentleman pilot behaves.
-
On the other hand, had a great duel against a spit today in my new found love; the 109-G2. After what must have been a 5 min fight from 15k to the deck I finally managed to land some rounds on him, removing one wing from the rest of his plane.
After wiping the sweat from my brow and calming the nerves with a slurp of tea: the salute was duly dispatched for the best fight of the year so far, only to see in the buffer - "user so & so not online"..... I feared for his dog.

if you just type .s does it salute with no name?

No .s has to be followed by a game ID of someone who is currently online.
Guess I dont often run into a situation where the person is not already tuned to 200.
