Take this .300 WBY....  meat for the whole family for six months faster than you can say "ELK!"

LOL! Doubt whether Zulu ever had any guns to be taken away. I know I didn't, I know my parents didn't, and I know my grandparents didn't. But, surprisingly, it has not compromised my lifestyle. I've never gone hungry for lack of a gun.

I like seafood - fresh caught shellfish and all that - crab, mussels, prawns, langouste, oysters - kind of difficult to catch with a gun. :lol Besides, I don't live by the coast. So...

... I shall get my genuine seafood fix next month in Le Touquet - March 5, can't wait. They do a seafood platter - a three tiered affair. There will be Kronenbourg 1664 before, St. Emillion during, and Armagnac after. Hehe, must sound a bit outlandish to some - travelling to another country just to have dinner. But it's fun, £39 for the eurotunnel train, £54 for the hotel for one night, and whatever else we spend. Can't be bad. :aok

Christmas had the family dining with the crystal and fine china.

The plates were heaped with grilled elk tenderloin done to a turn over mesquite, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans almondine, freshly baked bread and a host of other delights.

Eggnog with brandy to start, a great cabernet with the meal, MacAllan afterwards.

Hehe, must sound a bit outlandish to some - travelling to the middle of the state, hunting on virgin prairie like our ancestors did, harvesting one's own meat and then enjoying a truly excellent meal from the fruits of one's labor. About $30 for gas and $0.75 for a .300 Wby.  Can't be bad.

:p

LOL Toad! ;) Bread? Potatoes? Way too much carbohydrate in all that! What make of crystal? What make of china? Those items are big sellers to the yanks that come over here. Or at least they were, but right now £1 = ~$1.88, so I guess folks over there are having to tighten their belts.

I hate to tell you, but "harvesting one's own meat" sounds like a euphemism for... erm... well, you know. :D

Lenox and Waterford. Carried home a lot of Waterford from the PX at Mildenhall.  ;)

Bread and Potatoes are fine if you get off your duff and walk the prairies while havesting the meat.

The menu was too long to post anyway; there were lots more veggies and stuff.

No, it is your DUTY to take that gun out to the range and enjoy it.  I am here in Michigan, where the weather is too miserable to shoot.  Do it for me.  You know what I like most?  The "Tiiiing" when the clip ejects.

yeah, i can really see myself with a gun and walking somewhere to hunt.

its the sad truth but Great Britain in the majority of places is too overcrowded to have guns or hunt for our meat. and more importantly, under populated with wildlife that is edible.

just remember how much more space you have in America.

you're lucky, i wish i had that 'freedom'

that we are nannied, or not, is a different question. I dont feel the need for owning a gun, so i dont feel nannied. there are some people which still belive in intelligence before force as a moral.

Actually, mechanic, there is excellent pheasant shooting close to where we live. This is a photo of Fingest, taken a few summers ago on the way down from Cadmore End. Howe Wood is to the left. Last time I was up here, I even found a discarded shotgun shell right where I stood to take this pic.

mechanic... I don't smoke or drink but when my government tells me I can't I feel very much nannied....  I think it is even worse with guns tho since they are taking away a very useful tool..  they are taking away your ability to defend yourself along with hunt or collect or just plink at cans.    Weather you do this things or not.... you  are still being nannied.

England has plenty of small game. The big difference is historically your game belongs to a particular person.

Here in the States, wild game belongs to "the people".

So, over the years, hunting pretty much became a rich man's sport in England. Here, it's available to anyone with ~$20 for a license.

I like seafood - fresh caught shellfish and all that - crab, mussels, prawns, langouste, oysters - kind of difficult to catch with a gun. :lol Besides, I don't live by the coast. So...

Your right ,you don't need a gun to bag seafood....anyway Dynamite works much better in shallow water. More effective than shooting 'em one at a time.

Yeah Lazs, I have noticed a lot of on the clip ammo for sale.  Some for even less for less rounds of ammo.  The trick is some of it is corrosive.  You always got to catch that word when you're buying ammo.

I'm willing to put corrosive ammo through my nagants, but through my garand?
Title: Guns
Post by: Leslie on February 09, 2005, 05:36:02 PM
Black powder is corrosive to barrels.  Best way to clean one is with hot water and Ivory liquid soap.  Barrel should be so hot you can't grab it.  Use a potholder. bucket and half inch stick dowel as a ramrod .  Clean it as best you can and finish up with Remington gun oil in the spray can.

It's impossible to clean it where there's no residue.  There will always be a rust colored patch no matter how many times you clean it.

I'm currently going through a case of corrosive Korean surplus. At first I was verrrry leery of the stuff, but I've since learned how to properly neutralize the chemicals with ammonia or "GI Bore Solvent" prior to a normal cleaning. Also, there were a couple of lot numbers imported that were notorious for erratic powder charges and in some cases catastrophic overpressures, but they've been identified and taken off the market. I did receive one case of ammo that has what appears to be water/ moisture damage and haven't fired the stuff. Buyer beware.

Oh yeah...don't forget to treat the op-rod and housing as well.

I'm new to black powder, but I've been told the product called "Bore Butter" can act as a pretty good conditioner and barrier when used before shooting and after cleaning. I don't have rust in my barrel, but I had a rust problem in the lock and around the nipple. Are the percussion caps corrosive, too?

i tried bore butter but it probably doesn't make any difference.  It does have protective qualities.  Three-in-one is the best oil for cleaning rifles, it gets most of the residue out.  You can clean your rifle using just that if you're lazy.  But hot water and Ivory soap is the standard.

Most of the stuff now available is NON corrosive.  I just bought 6 sealed spam cans of 1959 Lake City AP, in clips and on bandoleers.  Opened one of them up just to see the ammo. It's beautiful, black tipped, nice and shiny.

Absolutely Beet1e.  If I knew what a butter knife was.  Did learn how to throw a tomahawk at a mountain man rendevous one time, and at that same rendevous, my friend beat the Mississippi state champion at the tomahawk  throwing contest and won two turkeys.  That was his first time and he learned it in a couple hours.  It was quite an upset but I couldn't have done it.  The shooting competition was pretty stiff.  Those guys were good.

This is something I don't really understand. To me, saying a primer is "mildly" corrosive would be like saying your girlfriend was "mildly" pregneant. It either is or isn't, but at any rate I clean everything after use regardless.

Just bought a Taurus 24/7 in 45ACP. Feels sweet in the hand. Couldn't pass it up as Taurus has them on sale for about $200 off. Thing holds 12+1 and with enough safety features to actually carry it with the +1. Never done that before. Traded in the first pistol I ever bought, a Ruger P85 9mm, so I ended up paying squat for it.

Now who has a copy of that "sucking up to people to make freinds book" I can borrow as I've no where close to go plinkin? I don't know where its cool and where its not. People are funny about that stuff these days.

talking trash about rednecks because they like their guns and hunting is rediculous. I myself enjoy the full season of Bow Hunting, Rifle Hunting, and Small Game hunting for pheasant. I use my classic Over and Under Wichester 12 Guage 3 inch mag with #6 shot for Pheasants. My dog is a german short hair and she really gets on point unbelievably. I have 1 M1 Garand, quite a few different shotguns of different guages. I also have an M14 and a mini-14. Along for Bow hunting i have a HoytUSA Razortec shooting 45/60 carbon arrows with 100 Grain Cut on Contact G2 Montec Broadheads. I also enjoy a day's worth of Bass fishing in the Boat my father bought last year, a Nitro 2003 21 footer with an Opti-Max 225 HP motor and a 12 thrust trolling motor on the front. Thank you, Have a Great day.

Then took out the savage 22.250 and shot 100 rounds at 450 yards steel target and had a blast. Funny the redneck that i was talking to brought out his son to shoot around was president for Dell. 2 Stony, can you honestly tell me how much a thompson recoils?

I've talked to WW2 vets who had no problems whatsoever controling them and hitting stuff.  And then my father had one on a boarding party and said he couldn't hit **** it was so hard to control.

Enjoying recreational activity outside, shooting at a target with iron sight from old WW2 rifle. I know that sounds bizarre to you but you really have no idea what you’re missing…. Maybe someday your county will have enough balls to allow its citizens to have weapons. For now you can wish that you were here in this photograph.  :aok

Awwww... "pointy-headed" is a banning insult?

Goodness me! Run home to Nanny then!

I didn't even "call" you anything.

I said your personality leaves much to be desired. That's my true opinion from reading your posts and your reasonnig in starting such a thread.

Then I said you have a sharply pointed head.

That's a "personal insult"? That's a bannable offense? Just what does "pointed head" connote to you two guys? It's not like I called you a #@)*%& )%  %))@#$&@  )$%$%% or anything someone would recognize.

Where exactly is the insult in pointy-headed? Is that a serious UK insult that I've missed?

Slow day for you guys, I guess.

Jeez Toad, all he said was that he noticed rather a lot of gun threads which surprises him because he has no interest in guns himself. I hardly think that constitutes a personality disorder, or whatever you meant by what you said.

The only disorder in my personality is that I can't resist coming back Lol.

:)

Hey Toad get a sense of humour. I know you are a yank but try and understand Irony go on you know you can do it.

Sorry but your long pointy head diatribe thing sounds a bit like you are taking this all too seriously! Slow day for you too?

fx1..  I have allways had a love/hate relationship with the semi rimmed 38 super... Never shot it in really accurate guns but if Kimber brings one out I might give it a whirl again.

"What you never had you don't miss"   Guess I am just too adventurous to find any merit in that statement.   I am more of a "lets give it a try" kinda guy.   Even tho I don't climb mountains and never had.... I am glad to know that the equipment and the activity haven't been banned or regulated into uselessness.

I don't miss anything until someone tells me that I can't do or have it.

The recoil isn't that bad, but if you're not ready for it, the barrel will climb on you on full auto. It's actually only accurate at close ranges, but still fun to shoot.

the "grease gun" is a lttle more fun to shoot IMO, it does climb a bit more than the thompson but... Recoil?  I don't consider recoil a factor in either gun.

What do you think zulu?

Kimber is a great gun but you need to shoot a tru custom gun. Its to bad that their rifles have such a bad trigger on them. I was looking around yesterday in the gun store and %75 of the 1911 were kimber. My 1911 is a remington production made in late 1944 and was used in ww2 by my grandfather. Love to take it out to the range, i reload some nice light recoil rounds for it and aim 2 feet below my target at 25 yards "dam iron sights". If i was in the market today for a 1911 i think that a las baer would be the way to go. A cop friend has one and its really nice but he doesnt carry it do to weight.

The trick with the thompson is short bursts.  2 or 3 rounds at a time.  Then it walks up and left, but you can keep all three on target at 100 yards.  Tommys are cool.

My personal favorite, though, is the reising.  M1A1 Thompsons have a cyclic rate of about 700-800 RPM (IIRC), and 1928A1s have a cyclic rate of about 650 rpm (again, iirc).  The Reising has a lower cyclic rate of about 500-550 RPM, which makes it more controllable, and it has a more inline stock design, which reduces muzzle rise.  I can keep a full mag string (20 rounds) on target at 100 yards with a reising.  Some day, when I am rich, I will own a reising.

fx1..I have shot Wilson combats and a les baes..  they are both great guns.   I am not a dyed in the wool 1911 fan...  like em fine but like 44 mag revolvers better...  The Kimber is a great gun because it is a factory .45 that shoots into the same or better groups as the best custom gun... it shoots any kind of ammo all day long and.... every single one of em does... when I have to depend on it I like to know that hundreds of thousands of em are out there and being used and have no problems... the kimber custom eclipse 2 that I have was resonablely prioced... extremely well made to tollerances the custom makers can't even match... it has all the features I wanted and night sights and.... it is reliable and accurate and rugged.   It does everything I want a .45 to do except shoot 44 mags out of a revolving cylinder.
