Title: Unknown Maneuver
Post by: stantond on February 09, 2005, 09:54:51 PM
Hi,

I am looking for an explanation for what looks like a vertical rudder turn.  It seems AH is 'tuned' for that manuever.... so how do I learn it?

Its not a hammerhead, or wingover, it seems popular with P51's, Tiffies and P47's but I bet an F4U can pull it off as well.  I see it more and more and really don't know what maneuver it could be.  Any ideas?

The first time I saw this was from a P51 who swiveled around and face shot me. This was quite awhile back.  I never investigated the maneuver then, but now it seems so common... I think I'll join them.

The manuever seems to start in a slight nose up condition and provides a quick reversal with little to no altitude or energy loss.

Hiya TC!

Rgr that.  I still owe you a document that I am working to put online.  I need to spend some time in the training arena.  I will look for someone to point out the finer points of, what I believe to be, an aileron/flap assisted  rudder turn.  Never read about this maneuver in any aerobatics books, so this will be interesting.

It sounds like you're seeing a bit of a verticle scissor. Basically they pull up hard into a stall to cut horizontal movement and make you overshoot, then dip a wing and press rudder to get a bit of a stall to drop the nose and saddle up.

In AH1 this maneuver wasn't as common as it is now for both easier gunnery and a harder stall. This was something you'd see 38s do a lot but that's pretty much it. Now everybody does it, as for some reason if you get your wing down before the stall there are pretty much no recovery issues in almost any plane.

Yes, I believe that's what I have been seeing.  I finally got afilm of OLDemon flying his pony (I kilt em btw) and saw what was going on.  There may have been some rudder use, but for the most part it was a vertical scissors reversal.  Come to think of it, I had seen this before.  Once I  changed my perspective it became much clearer.

The maneuver requires more E than I originally thought and the person who uses that manuever must anticipate where you will be.  The latter part is what I need to capitalize on.  All planes I find using this manuever have a higher energy state than I do but can't get around for a tracking shot.  Having excess airspeed, flaps, and using gravity to fling these planes around makes a big difference.

I can host the film if anyone is interested.

Glad you managed to figure it out. You'll have to demo it for me in the TA if we hook up again.
