NK admitted to having a nuclear threat.
-
They've admitted to having it in the past also!
Someone will come along and say, "Prove it!"
Nk will pull the same old BS playground routine of, "We don't have to if we don't want to!"
This will be the third time I remember them doing it.
-
I think they were just rumors and unofficial statements.
No Nolth Kolea is stating it officially and backing out of the talks.
If they had tested 'em to see if they work, then countries will be able to call their bluff.
-SW
-
In late-80s IIRC "Izvestia" newspaper (a most respectable news source, not politically-insane Pravda or low-life proletarian Trud) published some KGB papers confirming that DPRK has from two to four nuclear charges ready, not tested yet due to probable political consequences.
-
it must be true, because NK would never lie.
-
No, they were not Rumors. They made official statements and people called their bluffs.
-
Does this mean Carter has to give back the Peace Prize?
-Sik
-
No, I'm pretty sure that they only said they had reprocessed the uranium rods, and could make nuclear weapons. Not that they had any. The idea that they had as many as three nuclear weapons already was spawned by intelligence rumors.
-SW
-
This is the first PUBLIC statement from NK of their possession of Nuclear weapons. Previously they stated to the UN they had possession of such, but made no public statements.
-
*well* no need to go to war to NK because they was open minded enough to say they had WMD ?
Think that is the way to go ?. Then again what possible couldt be achived there ? Rice ? nah we like potatoes :D
-
If you will notice, this announcement just happens to coincide with Rice`s Euro tour which was based mainly on the discussion of Iran`s nuclear capabilities.
Every time there is any reference to nuclear anything North Korea jumps up and shouts "we have it, we have it".
It`s bascialy another sad attempt to weasel money, goods or services from the U.S.
North Korea is a joke. They have nothing left in their tin can so they put two rocks in and rattle it as loudly as possible.
-
Hopefully Iraq won't be reconciled in Bush's second term or he'll probably go in there blasting away.
:(

If they have WMDs then we must invade...that's the rule.
-
shreck. Is there any way we can get a new set of rules?
-
You don't change the rules mid-game!

They musn't have one must they Mr Bush. After all your Govt and ours only has enough of the damn things to kill us all over and over.
I haven't noticed the North Koreans trying to invade other countries and impose their ideas of freedom on us for at least 50 odd years so they must be dangerous musn't they!!?
-
people here being typical bsb smartasses, I salute you
-
No, they haven't been trying to spread freedom.
They have enough problems not feeding their own people.
As much as I abhor the idea, I think Zulu7 will be the first person ever to hit my ignore list.
-
Lasersailor,
In the real world wouldn't we be more secure if Zulu was President of the U.S.?
Chances would be free speech becomes a capitol offence if it is not on the accepted monthly PC list. A ban on Christianity as an ideology of hate and discrimination. A increase of the minimum tax rate to 80% to save the world from global warming since our GDP shows our citizens have way too much compaired to the world at large. And yes, a repeal of the constitution. That usless, arrogent, war and nationalistic inspiring peice of utter trash.
Self defence becomes a capitol offence punishable by prison time up to life because criminals is persons to. After all we have to learn to play nice together and pay our taxes to save the world, or we will be judged and jailed for our own good. Oh yeah since it's working out so well around the world, all privately owned firearms will be confiscated for our own good. After all we have to learn how to play nice with each other, or, what solution will the government have but to put us in jail to protect the other subjects and all the children alive and to come. Oh and nooks too, gotta protect the 3rd world from our inhumanity and arrogance.
The things you have to do to protect your subjects from themselves for their own good. They just seem to get stoopider and in greater need of guidence the higher you ascend on the ladder of altruistic knowlege and power to save the world from itself or sumpin like that..........
Hey,, why not,,, ZULU for Prez,,,fourty more years...lets hear it guys....I'll turn in my guns and freedom with the rest O yas rednecks down at the indoctrination center.....:)
-
Bustr, you know just about anyone could come up with a rebuttal such as "Lazs for President!" and include gross overexaggerations of minor points of policy. But nobody else would take the time.
Shine on you crazy diamond. :aok
-
For your sake, I hope you are just kidding.
But anyway, liberals are not safer to have because they get walked all over.
Saddam Hussein ****ing embarassed Bill Clinton. He tried to pull the same **** with both Bushes. Remember what happened?
-
I wonder who's more likely to toss nukes, a country starving to death with nothing to lose or a country with a good standard of living and lots to lose.
When they start boiling their leather belts for soup and threatening unless they get charity, let's see who antes up the blackmail payments.

Hey most institutions of higher learning in the US dont belive in the 1st amendmant except for those of their ideology. Take a look on http://thefire.org/ at the number of cases taking universities to court for suppressing free speech. England is already doing such with its anti-hate law. But its all to make us play nice together, so some speech is not acceptable and has to be controlled or gee you go to jail.
I just prefer satire because Ive learned in very large US corporations free speech is only a reflection of managements ideology. Right now I work for a corporation committed to multculteralism on a grand scale. So I take my yearly indoctrination classses, regurgitate the politically correct line of the month and mind my own business. They would cast me out the door in an instant otherwise. Difference is not acceptable or tollerated unless you act their ideology.
The U.S. is keeping talks to 6 parties because alone Kim is a nut case and his ego could cause hime to lauch one because he didnt get no respect. Only an infitile person would entertain the tought that the US or Britan would ever launch. Blair and Bush both love the human race more than a person who could seriously entertain such an idea.
-
Ok, let's make the assumption that he does have one and he's going to launch it.
Is it possible to stop it at all?
-
Not really. You're back to the MAD doctrine until there's a workable Star Wars.
So, if he launches the rest of the world can either take it or obliterate NK.
Kim is such a stable personality though and his people are living the truly "high life". Probably couldn't eat another bite of beef or pork they're so stuffed. So, no worries Mate!
-
Didn't I see a parade of the NK army in front of the dictators (or whatever he's called) residence fox-trotting behind a big nuclear missile a year or two ago? This shouldn't come as news to anyone

Does America realy have the arogance I see reflected in these BBs. How do you guys realy know that your way is right. And what in the hell gives you the right to tell the rest of us how to live?
No North Korea might not be a good place but who gave you guys the job of telling us all what a good place is. I don't want to be an "american idiot" and neither do large sections of this planet! get the message guys or the war is going to be very very very bloody.
Substitute the word "horror" for "arrogance" from Brando's speach in Apocalypse Now. Right in the same whisper repeat after me.... The USA oh my god ...........the arrogance, the arrogance, the arrogance, the arrogance, the arrogance.................... ...................
My speach is free because I don't toe the bulls** america is land of apple pie and all things good line!
I don't hate all Americans before you accuse me just those with a messed up attitude to the rest of us!

I saw them write your name in the little black book, squinting behind the corner. :D

1. Everyone, no matter how they hate us, wants to live in America.
2. When was the last time you heard of a US citizen, jumping on an innertube and defecting to a European Country.
3. Everyone owes us Money.
4. Whenever there is a disaster everyone cries to the US to send help and then carps when we don't send enough to suit them. Can't remember reading anywhere of the European Countries that sent aid to the US after 9/11.
5. UN is in New York not Liverpool. (Not that we really want it.)
6. Just one Aircraft Carrier from our Navy projects more power than 90% of most Countries.
7. When some Country is killing off it's own citizens right and left somehow it alwyas seems the US hasn't done enought to stop it. Never heard them mention UK, France or Germany.
8. Best looking Women in the World. (Nuff said).
9. Freedoms we have are the envy of the world. (Whether most will admitt it or not).
THAT SIR, is why the US is the Greatest Country and why we are right. While it is not the perfect system, it is far better than ANYTHING anyone else has.
! :aok

I take pleasure in knowing that zulu7 lives much closer to NK than I do... probably well within range of Kim's first salvo. Cheers zulu7, have a nice weekend!

First off those of you who use the "amerihater" word read my last line!
Second this is the 21st century guys, might don't mean right!
Third its our little island that is still called GREAT Britain. And yep it is thanks. We're doing pretty good right now. We have the strongest economy in Europe, for the first time I can remember less unemployment than Germany and I think we have a pretty robust yet sensible foreign policy. It ain't perfect but nowhere is still I'd rather be here than there!
Bush and the Rabid Neo Cons want perpetual war a bit like "The Party" in the novel 1984!
Let me quote you a line from the opening few pages of the book,
"War is Peace....Ignorance is strength"
Now that sounds like US foreign policy to me!
Now incase you didn't twig, I'll quote myself
"These are my opinions and mine alone"
I don't expect you all to share them.
So go on lets have a little debate! But how about laying off the personal insults Masher and using the intellect instead? Oh andyou hate Irony because you don't get it. not your fault its just something I think us Brits are better at. Oh and Laughing at ourselves.
:aok
-
Zulu you should realize that the word amerihater comes up whenever you disagree with them for anything.
They slam the ace from the deck immediately when they run out of anything intellectual to say.
-
So I see. Shame that all that power is in the hands of people with the potential for so much ignorance!

And it used to be referred to as the British Empire but was it Might or Right that was lacking? ;)
 Personally, (gazes into crystal ball) I don't think we are yet advanced enough to avoid another "Great War" You know, the good old fashioned kind. Screw the civilians, flatten the city. Flatten the country. 21st century ain't over yet.

I think some of that may be due to the vast majority of people on these boards are American, some of the europeans feel as though they have to try and make the americans aware that they are not so ahead of the rest of the world, if you get what i mean? Its like the little guy has to shout real loud and jump up and down to get heard.
Every country has good and bad points, i just accept that mine has faults and get on with it.
-
Furious,
A better way to look at how our EU members think of us is to go back to our last election. There was a mail blitz effort from England to I think a town or county in Ohio. The addresses of the locals were aquired and circulated by a English based newspaper so that its readers could write the American voters and attempt to have a voice in our Presidential electoral process. They were concerned that the President of the United States is the most powerful man on the planet and such even they are not immune to his mistakes. It being the 21st century and such a small planet.
I even read remarks from non-English EU citizens saying in effect that since the President of the United States "is" so powerful that they should be able to vote in our election for President. They felt helpless in the face of what his mistakes could cause.
I suspect President Bush would not be furballs or zulu's vote for PM of Great Britan. Or their vote for the most powerful man on earth. Remember, to them our nuc arsenal is a real and prevelent threat to the world. We do have the biggest stick, and who has his finger on the trigger does frighten them. Unlike Kerry, Bush doesnt discource the nuances adfinitum, he doesnt comprimise and he places the Security of the United States before the feelings of the world community.
So Furious, how would you respond in their position? Taking pot shots is about all they have.
-
Usually I'm all for bashing Europeans...
But after 9/11 almost every country helped us in Afghanistan. While they didn't have the balls to help in Iraq, it's still admirable.

Bustr fair point and Furball is correct. this BBs is dominated by Conservative American opinion. And it would do that nation no harm to listen with a more open mind to what the rest of the world says.
I'm sorry but I honestly believe that many US citizens are very badly informed about what the rest of the world thinks. Hence the suprise of many that America was even hated by some, when the awfull events of 9/11 unfolded.
The tragedy is that instead of examining their position in the world and seeking to build bridges and break down hatred, it seems that the US has used those events to become more extreme , right wing and aggressive. You guys are not making freinds out here and as 9/11 showed that may not be such a bright move.
You guys need to listen more to your freinds before they become your enemies.

I certainly hope that N korea hasnt succeeded in smuggling its Nukes out of thier country and into another country, especially this one. that could get ugly if we attack them. I read a Report (probably just an ugly rumor, but still, something to think about) that they are establishing drug smuggling routes into the US cities for no other reason than to do this inn case they are attacked.

The world as it is will not go away with building bridges. It is at this crossroads. Groups of idologicaly differing people have or will have nuclular wheapons sooner or later. Unlike Russia, China, Isriel, India and Europe who have much to preserve, there is a real and present danger that one of these ideological groups will by design or accident set off at the minimum one nuke. I did not include Pakistan because it is in danger of internal instability by non-western freindly fundimentalists. The current leader got there by a coup.
Have any of you thought about, where do you want this nuke to go off? North Korea has increased nervousness in many around the world recently. It is speculated North Korea might have a missle that could hit Alaska or even Washington State. So Zulu would be rid of a few "Gun Strokin Rednecks" like me. Cool we are the U.S. whom many are angry at for not listening to them on how to reason with Osama and those like him. But then North Korea just wants food to feed its masses and we have so much.
Then there was a rumor about 20 satchel size Russian devices not accounted for. One would turn the center of Washington D.C. into Hiroshima, and slowly kill thousands for 10-20 years in near by states. You guys want one to go off there? That would kill my parents. Or maybe they could finish the job in New York and pick up a few 100,000 bonus points in New England. I live near Silicon Valley. One device would severly hurt the American tech sector by taking out a whole generation of the worlds best and brightest. And then this "Gun Strokin Redneck" would be out of Zulu's hair for real.
The United States is the biggest and most hated kid on the block. The bad guys are going to shoot at us. So guys yo might as well take up a lottery, get in line and tell me, where do you want us shot first. Because its after the fact, the cows are out, and snipeing at us is nothing compaired to what they are going to do.
-
Nope I do not wish that on anyone but I do believe that the US needs to change its current foreign policy strategy. i'm not saying force is always wrong just that at the mo it seems the list of US enemies grows and grows and I wonder when you will stop looking for more enemies and consider more closely the council of your freinds!

I cant stop laugh. If i will think about iraq, whitch were repoted to be full of WMD and there were nothing. No we have NK, whitch simply say..... Fu, we have them and we will enjoy them..... Where the hell are all those allmighty guys from CIA ? There were not any single warning that NK could develop Nukes last year (or sooner) from CIA. Only NK said that they have them. Instead of reports from NK, CIA reported pink elephants in Iraq, golden ants in Nigeria and pink panther in Iran. How can you actualy keep listen those super cool/secret informations, from "reliable" sources ?
But what is more important in this moment is attitude of SK and what they will do.

See now NK is a classic example of why we were right to go into Iraq.
I have long said I was for the operation in Iraq and would have been for it if they had said we were going in "Because its Tuesday".
My feeling has always been Saddam was a threat to our. and the worlds national interests. And a final showdown with him was inevitable no matter what way you slice it.
Even if he didn't currently have WMDs he was certainly hell-bent for getting Nukes. And it was only a matter of time before he got them. Sanctions or no sanctions (which as it turns out were starting to fall apart anyway).
Now lets say we didn't go in. Doesn't take a Nostradamus to predict what would have happened. Sanctions eventually fall completely apart. Saddam reinvigorates his WMD programs and eventually gets a nuclear capability.
Saddam Being Saddam re invades Kuwait only this time he has nukes to back him up. Thus giving him the capability to blackmail and hold hostage the entire region.
THEN what do we do?
So do we attack him after he gets nukes?
Unlike Scud missiles you dont have to be dead balls accurate when you launch a nuke a near miss works just as well and unlike the rest of the world Saddam has shown and proved he had no ethical problems at all in using whatever WMDs he had at his disposal first.
So even with the hindsight of him not having wmds now. Which every country in the worlds intel agencies said he had and not just the CIA.
I still think we were right to go in now rather then later.
Every country we try to keep from getting nukes ends up getting them anyway. India, Pakistan, And now NK are good examples.
So far in two years we've lost what, 1500 people in Iraq.
While each loss of life is terrible that number is damn near miraculously small after two years as far as wars go.
And certainly a whole lot smaller then if we waited till after he had nukes.
Personally I'm far more in favor of going to war with a country before it gets a nuclear capability then after it already has one.

Ok..spilt words? I'll guess you mean we shouldn't talk so tough. And learn to be more , lets see , for lack of a better term right this sec , we should be wimpy? Or Change our policy to one of "No Big Deal...you have em and we'd be happy to let you keep em. In fact how can we help you in your struggle?"
No warnings last year? I remember hearing about them wanting to make nukes last spring. I heard it ALOT. I think maybe you didn't. I know I did. On the news , radio , every dang day for a while. It stemmed from some investigation about money. Can't remember all the facts surrounding it , but there was plenty of talk here about NK looking to get nukes.
Propoganda? What you call propoganda maybe truth here. What we see as propoganda in your country maybe truth to you. Just a thought there. Where are we spreading propoganda?
:lol About you thinking it was only CIA reporting WMD's in Iraq. There were several countries intelligence agencies reporting SH had WMD's. I think your country was one of them. I may be mistaken but I don't think so. So don't come on here with that self righteous B.S. Hind sight is ALWAYS 20/20 isn't it?
Drediock was just about right in his post. Sooner or later we would have had to deal with the Idiot.

So a Nuke needs to hit pretty much on target to do any damage? Is that what you mean here Borada?

Depends on what you want to destroy doesnt it?

Say I wanted to destroy L.A.. If I hit with in say..1/2 mile of the middle of L.A. with a nuke missle , and my "Target" was the dead center of it , wouldn't that be close enuff to level it?

If we attack NK and the start throwing nukes around, it will be our fault. The question is, do we deserve it? Why do we go into Iraq to look for some canister full of rat poison on a deserted barn in the desert when NK is screaming hi and mighty that they have nukes and are itching to use them on somebody.

Yes.
Don't overestimate nuclear weapons. It's just a big bomb. Accuracy is more important for destroying a certain target then power of explosion. If we are talking of primitive devices that DPRK probably has - accuracy is a main factor.
Scuds had a standard dispersion of 300m IIRC, or even more in "upgraded" versions.
I think that a country posessing less then 10 nuclear charges will use them at the battlefield rather then terrorizing enemy by bombing cities.
But a 20 kiloton explosion over field positions probably destroys only one regiment.

If that was your target you would level most of LA.
if your target was slightly under ground then no.

Surface/Air blast was my reference. Thanks

There is a big difference between a 20 kiloton bomb dropped on Hiroshima and a 10 megaton warhead of Titan-II.

FYI: The first time I heard a Defense analyst speculate on the high probability of NK already having a nuke was 1994.
