Royal couple watch nation's mood
from
bbc news (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4256135.stm)
Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles are awaiting the nation's reaction after announcing they are to be married on 8 April.
Mrs Parker Bowles will take the title HRH Duchess of Cornwall after a civil ceremony to be held at Windsor Castle.
A Daily Telegraph poll of 1,313 people suggests two-thirds of Britons support the couple's decision to marry.
But only 40% think Mrs Parker Bowles should become Princess Consort as planned after Charles becomes king
Some 47% believe she should have no title, while 7% think she should become queen.
The Duke of Edinburgh and I are very happy that the Prince of Wales and Mrs Parker Bowles are to marry
The Queen
Clarence House statement
The poll also found that the majority of Britons would prefer the monarchy to miss a generation, with the Queen handing the throne to her grandson Prince William, 22, on her death or abdication.
On Thursday night, Prince Charles, 56, and Mrs Parker Bowles, 57, hosted a dinner at Windsor Castle, their first public appearance since announcing their engagement.
Mrs Parker Bowles said the prince went down on one knee to propose and added: "I'm just coming down to earth."
Their marriage will end years of speculation on a relationship which dates back to 1970.
Princes 'very happy'
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh said the news had made them "very happy".
Princes William and Harry said they are "very happy" and wish the couple "all the luck in the future".
Charles said he and his wife-to-be were "absolutely delighted".
The wedding will be a civil ceremony followed by a service of prayer and dedication in St George's Chapel at which the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, will preside.
The marriage is likely to be a sensitive issue because Mrs Parker Bowles is divorced and her former husband is still alive.
If he became king, Charles would be the supreme governor of the Church of England and some Anglicans remain opposed to the remarriage of divorcees.
"His divorce from Diana and the disappointment the country felt over how Diana had been treated... opened up a sense of disillusionment with [Prince Charles]," said Ros Coward, who wrote the authorised biography of Diana, princess of Wales.
The Archbishop of Canterbury said: "I am pleased that Prince Charles and Mrs Camilla Parker Bowles have decided to take this important step."
Tony Blair said he was "delighted" for the couple and offered his congratulations, as did Conservative leader Michael Howard and Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy.
Australia's Prime Minister John Howard also offered his congratulations, adding that their decision to marry was a "sensible and a good thing".
Mrs Parker Bowles has joined the prince at numerous engagements in recent years - mostly at evening events for The Prince's Trust.
Clarence House staff were at pains to point out that she attended these events in a private capacity.
QUESTION: how do the brits feel about the monarchy these days?
is it neccessary? will it last?
not a troll. just curious.
do tell.

Hiya JB88!
I have mixed feelings about the Monarchy. It is an outdated institution IMO, but the same thing could be said about marriage itself. And yet 90% of people will marry in their lifetimes at some point. But what's the point? The modern trend is simply to "be together" and start having kids. It does have certain legal advantages, eg. assets can be transferred between husband and wife without incurring liability for Capital Gains Tax. Also the tax allowance for a married man is more than for a single man in many countries.
As for Charles and Camilla, sure - I think they should get married because it's what they want. I felt sorry for Charles and the situation that was thrust upon him - ie having to marry to produce an heir and all that. He's done his duty, and now it's his turn to do something for himself.
Only about half the countries in Europe have a Monarchy, which shows that it's not really necessary in this day and age. People cite different reasons for why the monarchy should be kept. As time goes by I become more in favour of keeping the monarchy. But my reasons are that it provides a link to the past, and a time before Tony Blair's government began to do everything they could to destroy Old England and the fabric of our society.
"Cool Britannia"? Bollocks.
-
Let em marry. whether they are Royals or not they are people first. be a bit churlish of me to criticise when I'm getting hitched again after a Divorce!
Hopefully one thing I'm not Is a Hypocrite!
-
Somehow I think after Charles is crowned there will be no more kingdom in England... Maybe they should skip that guy and make William the King.
-
Or Harry, then we would have cool tabloids with kings and swastikas. :p
-
They're irrelevant and increasingly so. Centuries of inbreeding hasn't improved they're chances of survival either, nor being on state benefits for the last 400 years. They're a prime example of how socialism doesn't work and their days are numbered.
As Beetle pointed out though, nothing beats a hereditary monarchy for maintaining the status quo. As a nation we're still slightly bruised from losing the empire, we just couldn't cope yet with the future heir to the throne working as a 3rd rate ad executive for Ikea.
On the plus side, Camilla is past child bearing age so the chilling prospect of some weird half horse, half novelty beer mug hybrid is thankfully a non issue.
Off with their heads!

Ok, who's this 'they' you're talking about?
See, there's this thing called birthright which under ancient British law means that the monarch's eldest child is 1st in line to the throne when the current monarch either dies or abdicates. Now some people seem to think that the Queen should have abdicated and handed the throne over to Charles years ago but I disagree. Being the head of state in this country is a job for life and always has been, why should the Queen give it up before her time? Heck if I was King I'd wanna try to beat Queen Victoria's record of longest reigning monarch as well.
As for skipping Charlie, why should he not get his birthright? Makes a mockery of the whole thing. And besides, I, me, your very own Swoopster, am currently 2365th in line for the throne of this country. Apparently. So I was told once. So if the law gets screwed around with then my claim to the throne in the event of a major disaster which wipes out the 2364 people in front of me would be looked on in a bad light.
:D King Swoop the first. Got a nice ring to it don't cha think?
Ok back to the point. See, you've gotta understand that Charlie never wanted to marry Dianna. It was all arranged and prebooked and sorted out by Mum long before the event. Now sure, ok, Dianna kinda got the thin end of the wedge but she didnt deal with it very well. There's an awful lot that went on that was never made public and probably never will be, but let me tell you Dianna wasn't quite as nice as people seem to think.
But whatever Dianne pulled Charlie never answered back, did anyone notice that? Personally I admire the guys class and think why the hell shouldnt he be allowed to marry whoever he wants to and still keep his birthright?

That's because it's impossible - you can't polish a türd.
Crumpets? The nearest American equivalent is English Muffin - something I'd never heard of before I went to America. :lol

seems pretty obvious to me Dianna was killed off so this could take place with little hassle. Royalty is lame. No One is better because they are born into a certain family. Richer yes but better No.

Swoop old pal...beg to differ.
Charles marrying Camila is a signal that he is going to be skipped over. Lizzie may have blessed the marriage but in the back of her mind she has said "that's IT for you mate".
Just my $0.02
Personally I think Charles is "into" Camila because she is a kinky old hag. I mean he even wrote that he wanted to be reincarnated as a pair of her panties. She likes it hard, dirty and EVEYWHERE.
lol

That sounds about right. The guy is a gentleman through and through. Very well said swoop.

In defence of Prince Harry I should clarify that he was wearing the arm-band with bogus swastika.
The Nazist swastika on the Nazist (and Nazi Germany's) flag has to be tilted at 45 degrees, and have its four "hands" of equal length with the length of four ends of the central cross. So, Adolf Hitler's design canon was violated in this particular case. :D

How so?
See.....it ain't up to her. It's up to Charles, if he decides he doesn't want it he can pass it on to William but why should he?
Although.....up until the last few years he's always done exactly what Mummy told him to. If she 'told' him he'd probably obey. But again, Mummy may have realised that all the crap she put him through with Dianna needs making up for.
Now, just as an exercise here......imagine you held a position on the board of an important organisation and when you retired / died it was due to be passed on to your eldest child (er, Trew is it?)........and years ago you'd ordered Trew to marry a trophy wife but that didnt work out and now he's marrying the woman he wanted to in the first place.
Can you think of any reason whatsoever that you would be thinking "That's IT for you mate"?
They're still people even though the blood may be blue.
And while I do think that Queen Liz the 2nd has done nuthin useful in her entire reign I also think Charlie is a stand up fella. OK, he can be a bit of a numpty at times but the man has class. William could be going the same way, we'll see. Harry......is a complete numb nuts and frankly I don't think Charles is his father.
The very fact that Charles has waited for such a long time and agonised over the decision of Camilla's titles with a view to her being accepted by the British public shows exactly how he views his position. Not as an all powerful ruler but as a true King.
If it was me I'd have married her years ago and stuck up a two fingered salute to anyone who had any criticisms whatsoever (er, well not her cos she's not my type but you get the idea).
-
Swoop,
Thing is...I'd NEVER insist that Trew marry a trophy wife, or any wife he did not love and respect. Doing so is just simply beyond any bounds of reason or fairness.
The Queen, as you rightly pointed out, does/did not adhere to such morality. She told Charles he was marrying Diana and that was that.
People think Maggie Thatcher was a tough chick. She doesn't hold a candle to QE2. Iron fist? Try titanium fist.
I don't think Charles is a bad guy, but I've never been able to see him as King.
William is gonna be wearing that crown, not his old man, and marrying Camila is just the excuse the Queen needs to justify the "passover" within the family.
Charles was a naughty boy. He did not do as mummy told him and he is going to "pay" for it. I think he knew this in any case and decided to simply not fight it anymore. He may as well marry and be happy with the woman he loves (for whatever that reason may be).
I tend to agree with your assessment of Harry. That act of absolute stupidity wearing that nazi uniform to the Halloween party was unforgivable. The thing that worries me about it was that William helped him pick out the costume and attended the party with him. He should have cuffed Harry across the head at the mere suggestion of such an outfit. But, he's stilll young. QE2 will be around long enough to ensure he has a few more years to realise what is smart and what is stupid.

Care to place a small wager?
Cos I can't see why the Queen would be pissed off with Charles. He did what he was told and she turned out to be a right wench who was way more trouble than she was worth. And he put up with it.
And now, years after her death, he wants to remarry. Why would the Queen be annoyed with this decision?
And again, I'm going to bring you back to my other point: It still isn't up to her.
P.S. As for Harry, it's not just the Nazi thing. He's a complete idiot. Did you see his reaction when he left school? Just cos the camera's were there if you ask me. I rate Harry's intellect lower than George Bush's and that's saying something.
-
Sure I'd be happy to make that wager.
You are forgetting that Charles didn't do "exactly" what he was told. He was having a bit of the old "in out in out" with Camila during the marriage to Lady Di.
How much we talking?
-
I don't think mere dollars can cover this one ;). I think we should be thinking about something more interesting like......dunno, gotta think about it. Something like loser streaks through the lobby of the next AH con following the coronation, but more creative than that.
Oh course there's always your Dad's Bently v my Dad's Jag if ya really wanna bet something tangible. :D They might have something to say about it though.

The streaking thing is interesting...except people may well get hurt if I lose and my python is swinging all over the damn place. ;)
Not sure either of our Dad's would care to risk their vehicles on this type of wager.
Yes, more thought is required.

LOL!!!!! Curv, I'll have my camera ready ;)
Yankee, we need the '05 Con info sorted PRONTO! :D

We may not be talking the '05 con here Oct, the Queen may go on for a few more years yet......
