‘STOP SUICIDES, CLOSE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE,’ GUN RIGHTS GROUP SUGGESTS (http://www.saf.org/viewpr.asp?id=139)

BELLEVUE, WA – The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) today called upon the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to “take an important step for public safety” and close the Golden Gate Bridge, which has been a popular suicide platform for more than 65 years.
“Several city supervisors want to ban handguns in San Francisco on the mere presumption that such a law would prevent crimes, accidents and suicides,” said SAF Founder Alan M. Gottlieb. “Well, it is an absolute certainty that closing the bridge would prevent suicides, and perhaps many accidents, as well. And just for the sake of argument, one seriously might question whether any of the more than 1,300 fatal falls from the bridge since 1937 were cleverly-concealed homicides.”
As gun rights groups and activists, including many gay gun owners, began putting momentum to their efforts to defeat a gun ban initiative, Gottlieb turned his attention to the bridge and its horrendous body count. USAToday reported that suicides have tarnished the bridge’s reputation. The newspaper recounted how the San Francisco news media created a macabre circus atmosphere in the 1970s and again the 1990s as the body count approached 500 and then 1,000 victims, respectively.
“Social do-gooders have gone on the warpath repeatedly against firearms for the most tenuous of reasons,” Gottlieb stated. “The Golden Gate Bridge is a proven killer, and media fascination with jumpers is sickening. It has inspired hundreds of people to end their lives. Anyone can simply walk out there and jump, or be pushed. There are no barriers, no waiting in line, and there is nobody assigned to the bridge who can check the mental and emotional history of bridge visitors. It’s far easier to walk out on the bridge and jump to your death than it is to purchase a firearm in California. At least when a person buys a gun, he or she must complete a background check and endure a waiting period. But nobody screens possible Golden Gate jumpers. Unlike a gun, you can’t even use the bridge to defend yourself against a criminal.
“The only way to prevent future tragedies,” Gottlieb said, “is to close the bridge. We need to stop the growing body count. It’s up to the Board of Supervisors to act, and they should do it immediately. If it saves just one life, closing the Golden Gate Bridge is the right thing to do.”

Knowing how many bigots there are in the world, I wouldn't be surprised if many gays feel the need to have a weapon for self-defence. The people who lose the most from a ban are those who most need the object being banned.

Everytime, when someone is trying to jump down, people go out from pubs (under the bridge) and make bets if he will make it or not.
However some people were complaining that squeaking sound of falling body, is annoying and they cant sleep well.
So few years ago, they installed some nests under that bridge.

It's very, very sad that people commit suicide. And every caring person in this country wishes they could help them and somehow stop the pain that drives them to this tragic decision. But, closing a Bridge, or any other public structure, just to stop it, paralyzes our way of life and provides no guarantee that they wouldn't find another way to take their life.
The way we want this World to be is so very different than what it actually is....

Well why dont they outlaw cars then also.

Fair enough Otto but I think you missed the point. They are being sarcastic and pointing out that people die from many ways. They are essentially using the gun banners logic back against them, not actually calling for the bridge to be closed.

Just a few days ago I witnessed a woman receive a phone call that her son had killed himself. It was one of the most horrifying things that I have ever experienced. I saw a woman experience the worst moment in her life and I can’t shake it; especially being a parent myself.

My niece's 15 year old brother in law shot and killed himself about six months ago...I've watched the anguish his Mom has gone through, and the torment she's suffering is much, much worse than the torment that drove her son to kill himself.

last week, a friend of mines son killed himself and 3 others in the wee hours of the morning.
He was driving loaded out of his head and crashed the car killing everyojne inside. It must be even worse knowing that not only is your son dead but that he took others with him.

at one point, someone supposedly had a motion activated deathwatch camera pointed at the bridge.
the stills would be something like.
bird. bird. bird. body. bird. bird. bird. body. bird...etc.
i found the reality of it to be pretty sick, but the idea itself conceptually profound.

There are roughly 2 a month over niagara falls.
Some are spotted going over and never found.
Some are not spotted and found in the Whirlpool.
Many uncounted ones are never found, their cars are just left in the parking lot.

Well, I can't speak for the motivations of the writer, but you will find that (1) SF has a large gay population and (2) gays tend to be on the left (liberal) side of the political equation. For gays to be against a proposed gun ban is remarkable for those reasons.

Regarding the gays and guns stuff mentioned earlier. There is a nation wide group called the "Pink Pistols" that is a pro-gun gay group. There was an article on them in th SF Chronicle a couple of weeks ago becuase of the SF supervisors plan to ban guns in SF. Something they, not unsurprisingly, are wholly against.
More power to them.

but suicide by firearm is one of the statistics that the anti gun nuts use to try to get rid our second amendment rights.
