Things are moving along. I've noticed IL-2 and now WB has expanded there hit sprites to include small explosions when certain things are hit.
Sudz is no doubt working the same thing in partical effects. Helix has been reworking WB effects for at least 3 years. Looks good.

Looked like overkill to me but I'm sure it was just a test and in the early stages...

At a distance they look great but maybe a bit too big, and up close they're definately too big. Still neat looking though.

I've always wondered, are the hit sprites server-side or client-side?

Anything graphicswise in an online game will always be client side.

I kind of figured. So when it looks like you hit, you may have not have according to the server.
I'll pay less attention to them now :)
Edit: Not that I was hitting anything in the first place :p

No. What you were refering to was the "sprite" a 2D graphic. It has nothing to do with damage tracking and is merely a visual representation of a hit. When you asked if the hit sprites were serverside or clientside you were refering only to the graphic representation of the hit.
As to hit detection, the way that works is that when you get a hit it is sent to the server which then sends it to the client of the person you hit. If you see a hit, you got that hit and the damage will be inflicted.

Gotcha, thanks for the explanation.

Recorded at low quality, but I really like it... I may go try WB to see what it looks like actually
