Title: Aircraft Gun Comparrison questions.
Post by: Sikboy on February 15, 2005, 09:27:17 AM
Ok, I've started collecting some data on the performance of various guns in Aces High.

I've completed the base work for my test terrain, that is modeled on the US Naval Warfare Center at China Lake, California. (this was chosen since... well, I grew up out there and was feeling nastalgic lol).

So my first tests are designed to test the destructive power of each cannon in terms of "pounds per round" This is obviously an Aces High measure, not a real world measure. Basically, since object destruction is determined by how many pounds of ordinance are dropped on them, the bullet's destructive power is determined by destroying an object of 200 pounds, then dividing the 200 (pounds) by the number of rounds required to destroy it. I may use a different measure, say 500 pounds (I haven't decided).

I've set this up so that I am able to test this at extended ranges (so far I have tested a few guns out to 500 yards, but still have a lot of room to back up even farther).

So, my question is:
What other comparrisons would you be interested in seeing? I was thinking "bullet drop" might be nice, so would "Rate of Fire"

I can't think of any way to test Armor penetration right now.

Anything else you were wondering about? I plane on putting everything up on a Webpage once I've finished the first batch of testing. This will include the methodology, as well as screenshots, films, and the test terrain used.

Btw: Destructive power on buildings and airplanes, will not give you the same values in AH.

AHHHHHHH I was affraid of that.

:sobs:

It's too bad too, because my initial tests were looking rather good.

I guess before I get too sad I should ask: will the two sets of numbers be incomparable? I mean, while the values may be different, will the be proportionally similar? IE: if the Destructive Power of a single .50 against an object is 1, and the Destructive power of a single Hispano round against an object is 20, would that 1/20 comparrison be similar against Aircraft? Or are they completely dissimilar, apples and oranges?

It has been done several times in the past, you should be able to do a search and pull up some numbers for values vs buildings.

As HT said, they aren't very useful vs airplanes..

I ran a few tests vs offline drones (counting hits).. it gets tedious emptying 1200 rounds one at a time (E4 with the ammo multiplier set to 10)..

really? I couldn't figure out how to test this until the Object Editor came out lol.

SCJazz did this a couple of years ago but for AH1.  It may be worthwhile to do again.

Yeah, I had looked at his initial test. I should have read the whole thread lol.

Since there is no drop in lethality over a given range against objects (but there is against aircraft), there's no need for my custom target object, which allows all aircraft to be tested out to at least 700 yards :p

I'm glad I posted this before I got too geared up. I'll complete the object tests since I've already started it, and the initial test was remarkably close to what we figured back in the earlier thread.

It should be, I don't recall any guns being changed with the introduction of AH2.

Sorry Urchin, I was refering to this thread here:
http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=141444

Where I added the numbers for a belt that was 50% HE and 50% HE(M), which would have had 88% the destructive power of a hispano belt that was 100% HE (obviously this didn't account for any AP or HE(I) rounds). Anyhow, the MG-151 round came out to 88.1% as destructive as the Hispano round against objects.
