Title: Glacier Girl last flight
Post by: CMC Airboss on February 15, 2005, 01:53:51 PM
I heard over the weekend that the P-38F Glacier Girl's last flight is on February 18th.  The source was Mark Allen of Underwater Admiralty Services whose group retrieved a B-17 from a lake in Labrador.  I was left with the impression that the newly restored B-17 "Liberty Belle" would be participating in the same event.  I don't know where this event will be but I'm assuming Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Id rather see it in a museum than crash a year from now. Always seems to happen. Its not a wild animal that deserves to be free! :)

Suntracker, sure!  If the Wx is good enough I'd be happy to fly to the event.  It's great...63 and sunny!  To walk outside and honestly feel warmth is a nice change of pace.

my email (nemypoo@aol.com) if you're interested.

LOLHROTFFPM.

Yeah after all that work it's just going to rot in a museum.  What was the point in making it airworthy.

It should be flown no doubt about it.  Bummer to hear it's wings will be clipped.

Mr. Roy Schoffner, the owner, and Bob Cardin, the guy who managed the project and who takes care of everything that relates to the plane, have both said that it will only be flown for an as yet undefined length of time, and then be retired. One goal was to have it complete the Bolero mission and return to the states. So, yes, it WILL be retired. But I do not know if it will be soon or not. The insurance on the plane is excessively expensive, and only Steve Hinton is allowed to fly it, so flight time is already very short, and hard to arrange. It is extremely expensive to keep it airworthy as well. Mr. Roy has funded the vast majority of the project out of his own pocket, he is old and is not well. I can see his position.

I can't think it is any worse to insure and maintain than one of the flying B17s.

Honestly, locked in a museum or a glacier seems like same fate.

But, but, but we could use the money for other more worthy thngs instead of keeping a B17 airworthy.  We could spend the money on reseach to see if lobsters actually feel pain in a pot of boiling water or why a ducks "quack" doesn't echo.....

Glad she's still going to be flying.  I was already racking my brains to figure out how I could get down there to see and hear her fly.

Keep us informed though.  :)

They should use to break the LA - NY record set by the 1st Lightning, then strafe a train, THEN retire it.
Got 2 lightnings on display within 100nm of me @ McMinnville (P-38L) & Tillamook (F-5) neither fly.  Used to be a @nd F-5 at Tillamook when they flew them, but it was crashed by some now dead guy.  I hope it was a compression dive at full throttle

That was a really sad thing to say about both the plane and the man who lost his life. Both were real assets to the aviation community, and their loss was a tragedy.

Jeff Ethell died piloting the P-38 at Tillamook.  His son used to be a member of the ICI Warbirds community and played in that online flightsim for several years, might still be there actually.  Dont know......

I think you wasted your time posting the link. Appears he cares nothing about the man or the plane.

The avatar has nothing to do with any teenager, it's from the poster for the movie "The Great Escape", he was around 40 at the time. I should have ignored you as well. The fact that you don't understand what was wrong with your statement confirms that. Have a nice day.

All pilots who fly warbirds must be saints.  Well, except for a few A-holes I have met, one P-40 pilot really stands out in my memory.

Just because a person has a million dollar airplane doesnt make him a good person.  Must be judged on an individual basis.

Agree absolutely, Jeff Ethyll's color photo collections of WW2
alone are amazing.

He wasn't the owner, his father was an ace in North Africa
in a 38 so he had a special interest in the aircraft.  Wonder how
people going to talk about you after you're gone.  Obvious you
knew nothing about this particular pilot.

I have no juice to get into this event.  Mr. Epps of Epps Aviation is turning 75 tommorow and there is to be fairly large flyover PDK sometime tommorow.  The info I got was compiled from a waitress, security guard, and an employee from Epps Aviation.

I saw a silver B-17 parked next to the tower and a world war 2 trainer also parked.  According to the guard a p-38, 51, zeke, daunless, and b-17 will be there.  There is also gonna be alot of vets and some celebs from atlanta there too.  Im betting bortz is on the list.

I will be snooping around there tommorow with my photo gear gear rest assured.

A quick update.   i was able to swing by the airport and take some pictures.  The B-17 was taking people up for rides @ 400 per person.  I paid 300 back in 1999 to go up.  Inflation.

The P-38 still has not arrived, but some of the planes from Ptree city were landing but I had to go on a service call so I had to leave.

I do not know how to post pictures but I got some good ones if anyone is interested in posting them let me know.
