All the mumbo-jumbo I've tried using to explain this is confusing. So I snatched Lephturn and we made these:
Yak Snapshot films (http://www.worldaccessnet.com/~delta6/htbin/snapshot.zip)
There's four films total, showing a few different approach angles. One pass I blew completely, another I got too much speed and blacked out. Still, you can get the picture from these. This maneuver isn't a great one, since it relies on complete surprise to actually work. Place the gunsight a little high, towards the nose of the target, and you have a good chance of getting a Pilot Kill. I got Leph twice that way with only short bursts. Once from only the MGs, the second using an all-out blast from everything.

Nice film!
The lead angle for a snap shot can be pretty significant. Here's an idea of the problem.
The yellow circle represents the nominal lead required for a 90 degree snap shot. I assumed fighter speeds to be the same (250KTAS), and an average muzzle velocity of 2500 ft/sec. The range is ~1000'.
The red arrow represents what the lead would be if you were in-plane with the target...clearly well out of sight!
Sorry about the ball...!!
