Just began reading. Interesting thing, but very disputable in some questions.

Duh! The nukes are there to destroy the giant comet (or meteor...can't remember which). Come on...didn't you watch Armaggedon or Deep Impact?

Exhausting. Main idea seems to be that it would not be good for anyone in the long run if nuclear weapons were ever used again.
But ... nukes still have substantial deterrent value (and the Atomic Scientists split hairs about that too).
Numbers still count big. From the West's standpoint, nukes have always been an ace against getting overwhelmed by larger numbers of forces from the East (speaking primarily of defending Europe).
Excellent discussion about China's nuclear force and what it may be deciding about adequate numbers for itself.
