"Never Stopped Fighting"

Here's an inspiring photograph and story we recently received:

Marine 1st Sergeant Brad Kasal (in the middle). This photo is from the most recent major offensive in Fallujah. 1stSgt. Kasal sacrificed his own safety to save a room full of fellow Marines. He ended up taking several AK rounds in the leg. Most of his lower leg was blown away but you can't tell it from this pic. He took rounds in the back which his armor saved him from. He took one round through his butt which passed through both cheeks leaving 4 holes in him. And he also took the brunt of a grenade blast. He jumped on top of a younger Marine to cover him from the fire. He killed the terrorist who did most of the damage to him and his men, and despite a massive loss of blood he never stopped fighting. Notice that he's still holding his pistol. He has been put in for the Medal of Honor for his actions on that day. He already has several Purple Hearts for previous battles throughout his career and he has turned some down so that he could stay with his unit. While in the hospital he has met President Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and several other celebrities. He said that Bush came in by himself and had a very long, sincere, and friendly visit with him.

Comic books heck, I read Blackhawk Down.  Single bullet in the leg caused a ranger to bleed to death.  I've heard of it happening many times also.

THORNTON, MICHAEL EDWIN

Rank and organization: Petty Officer, U.S. Navy, Navy Advisory Group. Place and date: Republic of Vietnam, 31 October 1972. Entered service at: Spartanburg, S.C. Born: 23 March 1949, Greenville, S.C. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while participating in a daring operation against enemy forces. PO Thornton, as Assistant U.S. Navy Advisor, along with a U.S. Navy lieutenant serving as Senior Advisor, accompanied a 3-man Vietnamese Navy SEAL patrol on an intelligence gathering and prisoner capture operation against an enemy-occupied naval river base. Launched from a Vietnamese Navy junk in a rubber boat, the patrol reached land and was continuing on foot toward its objective when it suddenly came under heavy fire from a numerically superior force. The patrol called in naval gunfire support and then engaged the enemy in a fierce firefight, accounting for many enemy casualties before moving back to the waterline to prevent encirclement. Upon learning that the Senior Advisor had been hit by enemy fire and was believed to be dead, PO Thornton returned through a hail of fire to the lieutenant's last position; quickly disposed of 2 enemy soldiers about to overrun the position, and succeeded in removing the seriously wounded and unconscious Senior Naval Advisor to the water's edge. He then inflated the lieutenant's lifejacket and towed him seaward for approximately 2 hours until picked up by support craft. By his extraordinary courage and perseverance, PO Thornton was directly responsible for saving the life of his superior officer and enabling the safe extraction of all patrol members, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

notice that even tho he is in obvious distress he is holding his finger outside the triggerguard.    He also obviously thinks that the pistol is useful.

wow. It's amazing what these soldiers are going through overseas at the moment. I have 2 close friends from High School that are, 1 in Iraq, and 1 in Afghanistan. I hope they are alright. I am not a service vet of any type except CAP but no veternacy involved in that really. But i must say Things like this that I see on TV and these rare pictures and write ups about the troops over there, make me think. Damn I am proud to be an American. Not everyday you see people give a crap lessa bout the conflict in iraq or Afghanistan. I you for bringing this news to us and a BIG to the GI's Overseas.
God Bless the USA

Ok let me explain elfie.

First of all I think he looks a bit like Tom Berenger in the movie.

Second when I saw that picture I recalled a scene in the movie where Charlie Sheen was talking to his squadmates about Barnes..

And the guy said something like this: The only thing that can kill sarge is sarge. If you try to shoot him he'll send the bullet right back with a candle on it.

Congress established it in 1862... and IIRC, the words "The Congress to" are printed on the back.

I've seen the movie Siaf, I understood what you were saying and it made me laugh real hard (something I needed after our 18 month old spent 9 hours in the emergency room last night because of some nasty virus) :)

It also has to be approved by Congress iirc, the actual name of the medal is *Medal of Honor* not Congressional Medal of Honor.

Actually both are accepted as correct.

http://www.cmohs.org/medal.htm

The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. Generally presented to its recipient by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress, it is often called the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Well its about time we had another then.

As Patton once said after the war..

"We keep hearing about our heroic dead
Seems to me we have an awful lot of heroic live ones too"

to all of them

Elfie,

Either is correct way to describe the award. When I was first going through training it was described to me as the CMH. Either way you want to call it, the men that earned it are the ones to be concerned about. Heroes of the truest sense. Those men, irregardless of rank, deserve a slaute from anyone in the military.

!! to that 1st Sgt. I hope he recovers fully and can return the life he obviously loves. I also hope he is recognized for his actions, it certainly sounds like the MoH (or CMH :p )is appropriate.:

No biggie.. :)

Wasn't it a line from "Courage Under Fire"? I seem to recall Denzel going on about how it's the MOH, not the CMOH.

Maybe....

When I was in the USAF, more than once I was *corrected* by superiors on the correct name of the Medal of Honor, thats where I got the impression that adding Congressional to it was inappropriate.

Noticed that too. Even severely wounded… beyond words.
