Title: Sub tile setter and snow not showing up
Post by: Waffle on February 20, 2005, 10:30:12 PM
Was messing around with NHawks sub-tile setter and can't get the snow tiles to show up in the TE. They are TERR0006 tile series, correct?

Anyway, if I make a map, the snow shows up on the map, but not on actual terrain.

Waffle - check the cache folder and see if there's a folder in there for your terrain. If there is delete it. The next time you run the terrain in the game your tiles should show up.

Cheers,

not a cache issue.

Got snow starting at almost 5000ft in Tilesetter - Y axis on points in TE are around 7-10000 that should be coverered with snow.

Same problem here.

Look at the tiles included with the AH2 TE, there is no snow tile. It's more of a rock tile than snow.

The names were simply used to maintain the same tile names the TE uses.

I made custom tiles...

With snow (terrain 0006)

Did you read the "readme" file for the tile setter? ...

"You can also substitute your own tiles by replacing the tiles in the "Tile Setter/tiles" folder with your own. This does not replace the tiles in the TE. It simply allows for you to get an idea of what your tiles will look like."

Make sure your tiles are in the texsrc folder. AND be sure to delete the files in the cache folder for the TE.

It won't set terr0x06 no matter what you do, it puts terr0x04 instead. I also tried terr0x16 still no go. Does it get the cells from the texsrc folder or the stdshp.res folder or mabey from the cache/stdshape folder?

Srry Nhawk, but yes tiles are replaced in the texsrc folder of the terrain.

My issue was that there seems to be something funky going on with the snow layer.

Basically imported a elevation bmp in to AH (set max alt to various things in testing  10k-28k) I had close to pure white around the edges, so I presumed that would kick alt up to 18k or near about there.

Anway - I ran tile setter - set snow at 7k  - nothing.

I went on the TE and checked info for the high points - and they were anywhere between 6-10k. But would not take the snow. They would  start there last layer (Rock) and run that up to the highest points.

Eventually I ended up getting it to work, but I have about 5-6 layers of rock and snow, and it was the longest guessing game as they did not seem to coodinate with the "Y" axis info data in the TE.

I'm not sure why you'd have problems, this is set by the tile setter...

The red is terr0006, the black snow is terr0106, the brown snow is terr0206 and the yellow is terr0306.

If you can, send me your settings file from Tile Setter and your .elv file from the TE. I think that's the only way I'll find where the problem is.

It doesn't take the tile info from anywhere. The main elevation(blue + in the TE) is read and main tile types are set in the .typ file with integers from 0 to 6. And sub-tiles in the .syp file are a set of four 2 bit binary values of 0 to 3 combined into an 8-bit binary value.

But when you run the TE be sure to delete the files in the cache/stdshape folder in the TE  Otherwise you'll be seeing tiles other than the ones in your .texsrc folder.

And make sure you delete the cache/ folder for your terrain in AH. Otherwise you'll be seeing tiles other than the ones in your .res file.

Ok, thought about this for a little while and I think I know what's going on. The tile type is set by the main elevation in the TE grid (blue +). If you have the tile setter set for snow between 7k and 8k and no main elevations(blue +) in the TE are between that range then you'll never see snow.

Remember if you have a main elevation(blue +) set at 10k, you won't see snow at 7k in that grid space.

That must've been the issue...was doing a lot of tweaking with seting ats - even getting detting down to 50 ft increments...lol

I think I have it figured out. Was just throwing me for a loop a little bit.

I've found where the problem is, it has nothing to do with snow or altitude. The top 4 boxes wil use the type from the 5th box no matter what type you set in them. It just seemed to be a snow problem because that's where snow usually is.

Hmm - i'll have to eyeball that - i had a few layers that i was messing with with snow and rock. But, It does make sense as to what I was seeing.

Thank you! :)
Bug found! :D
I'll correct it today and post an update on ah-terrains.

Cool - Glad you found it...

I was getting about ready to crack beacuse I couldn't figure out wth was causing the elevation discrepencies... lol :)

Now I got a challenge for ya...

See if you can figure out a way to rotate (in 90 degree increments) the subtiles :) I'll give ya $5 if you could do that.....

Had a neat idea about some terraced farms...lol

LOL, no can do. There's no control file for that. :)

But, one of your posts on photorealistic tiles threw me for a loop. So, I'm working on that (again).

Photorealistic works very well for AH2 just as it did in AH1. But, there are strict tile placement rules and finding the proper scale for the tile is the hardest thing to achieve. If I could find my old AH1 maps (computer crash many moons ago), I'd give a good example. One thing lacking in AH is the "feeling" of flying the terrain and being dwarfed by mountains. While AH2 has improved on this, it's still partially due to everything being the drab green. A 30 or 40ft plane is miniscule compared to mountains. Fly through the grand canyon or the rocky mountains sometime, you'll know what I mean then. :)

I'm nowhere near as good as Nuttz with tiles, but I can get by. I just wish I could team up with him. Like me, he thinks outside of the box most of the time.

Nuttz -

It's just that photo-realistic stuff looks odd in a world where everything is "drawn" - At least to me it does. If that makes sense.

Theres 2 examples in game, that I can think of off hand. One is the texture to the new .45, and the other are scans from a Cockpit photo book which are in the B24 cockpit - I think its the autopilot panel, as well as the trim wheel, and some center console stuff.

The photo stuff has that "flat" look like theres a haze over it. And the colors don't match with the surroundings. No matter how fiddling with colors, ect...it will never seem to fit in....

Again - this is just me.

I usually use photos as a guide and paint or draw over them..or use several layers of them with differnt opacity, properties, ect... as well as painting.I guess its all preference.

BTW - have you had any luck getting objects placed on a terrain tile?
