Heh, the Texas Hill Country is the perfect location for re-enacting Iwo. My wife and I visited the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg some years back. We happened to be there the day they were re-enacting a typical engagement between Japanese and American forces during WWII in a small arena-type setting they'd constructed back of the museum. The .50 cals were acetylene-fed, and LOUD. We happened also to be sitting on the front of the stadium-type bleachers, about 30 feet from the Japanese pill box. When the "Americans" opened up with the flame thrower, WHHEEEEEWWWWEEEE!!! I could feel the skin on my face drawing up from the heat. They said most victims of the flame thrower died from asphyxiation, rather than burning, as the rapid expansion of the air in the confined space sucked the air right out of their lungs. If you've never experienced it you would not believe how hot that flame is.

Slimm50,

The wife and I visited that museum a couple years ago. We were both impressed with it and plan to visit again this year.

I think Fredrickburg, and vicinity, is one of the coolest places on earth. Unfortunately, so do a lot of other people. Realestate prices have gone through the roof there. But still, some good BnBs there, and it's a good weekend getaway for us Houstonites. First time I ever visited the museum, I thought it was really odd to find a museum dedicated to the PTO, located in the middle of the Hill Country, so far from any ocean.
