Title: The Miracle
Post by: RTStuka on February 22, 2005, 01:36:24 PM
Today marks the 25th aniversary of the U.S. win over the russians in the 80s olympics. Listening to espn radio today they were asking if there has been a sport moment that had that much of an impact since that win.  Now granted their have been some amazing moments but I dont think any have or will ever have the impact that the win over the russians had. What do you guys think, have there been any moments in sports since that compare to that one.

I dont think there has been any sports moment in America that has equaled or even come close to when our Olympic hockey team beat the Soviets. That ROCKED! :)

I was playing high School hockey at the time, my junior year. Hockey was always popular at my school but after the miracle, it was THE sport.  Man those were heady days.

I do not think there has been a greater sports moment in American sports history.

I had the good fortune of meeting several of the players. I skated rat time at Bloomington Ice Gardens in Minnesota where the away teams would practice when they came into town to play the North Stars.  I used to linger afterwards and frequently got back on the ice for their warm ups and shoot arounds, til a trainer or coach tossed me.

Boroda,

Was there a similar feeling in USSR after the '72 basketball win?

When are we gonna have,Hispanic,Asian,Caucasion, months?

I dont see the need to have one seperate month just to single out one segment of the population if we dont recognise the other races with their own dedicated month as well.

Dont get me wrong. I have nothing against blacks or any other race. Flowers, as well as crap comes in all different colors

I'm all for equal treatment.
but I am against special treatment.

If we must have a month for this sort of thing
Why cant we just have a "Cultural History month" where we recognise and celebrate all races and cultures.

Well as if that putz nugget Barry Bonds has not done enough damage by destroying baseball now he goes and has his first press conference on the aniversary of one of the best moments in US sports history. This guy should be taken to an island and left there, he does nothing to contribute to society and then blames it on everyone else.

Those are greay moments too, Zulu but none com[are to the miracle.  It was a depressing time for the US. with the embassy takeover and our timid handling of it.... inflation   etc.  It really was our finest sports moment andnot just for the victory itself.

Ouch zulu, that 2nd one hurt. The first one too, actually. Anyway... Did you catch yesterday's champions league games?

I was forced to watch arsenal embarrass themselves, awful game. From what I've seen and heard afterwards the game in liverpool was much better, even though my team lost. Shame I couldn't see it.

sorry for hijacking

Sorry, I was born in 1972 and don't remember how it was...

For Soviet people the greatest moment in sports history was 1972 hockey series, when Canadians thought they'll easily beat Russian barbarians ;) USSR won the Canadian part, and Canadians won in Moscow. Soviet team was too delighted about beating NHL team in Canada that they thought on European (larger) hockey arena there will be no problem, but they underestimated Canadians. ;)

I don't remember 1980 Olympics "miracle", I watched some games on TV but missed the final :(

Another great moment was when USSR won Canada Cup in 81. And then Canadians stole our prize! ;) Hehe, at school our teacher asks us: "Kids, today is a great day, can anyone tell me what is so great abou it?", and one kid gets up and says: "Yesterday Soviet team won the Canada Cup!", and teacher answers: "No, you are wrong! Today it's Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev's 75th birthday!"

I can only imagine the brain washing you poor children went through in Soviet schools.  And don't say we do the same here, because frankly these days many teachers are so anti-American they do nothing but trash the US, not tell kids how "great" the US is.

How about when that gymnastics girl hurt her ankle and then still did the jumpy thing over the horse and stuck the landing and then fell over from her hurt ankle.

Yeah, that was the greatest sports moment in history.

Frankly speaking I mentioned this story (truely a childhood experience I remember now...) to show that we were normal kids, not paying attention to supposed brainwashing. And that teacher was nothing more then a silly hen. Even we, 9-years old kids were laughing at her. You have to understand that it was a common attitude to propaganda. Especially when dummy Brezhnev got his 5th Golden Star of a Hero (hero my ass!) only as a birthday pesent...

This days we have official propaganda line completely anti-Russian too :( Like all that crap from "liberal community" about old Soviet National Anthem when it was chosen again in 2001 IIRC. For me the "Unbreakable Union" is a symbol of our victories in sports. I remember our hockey team standing while in Canada they had to play it when they won... A very touching moment.

Boroda i wasn't born yet, but I know that the 72 Summit Series was "the moment" in World hockey.

I was born in 78 and was on skates before i could walk.  The pick up games we had were always Canada vs. Russia.

Weird thing is...you didnt ***** if you had to wear the red jersey.  You did have to put up with the ICUP (I see you pee) jokes..but you didnt feel bad cause you were playing for the Rooskies.

And Paul Henderson's goal was a total fluke...I hereby apologize on behalf of my Nation for his BS goal.

BTW, 1972 series are availible in Edonkey network, just search for "hockey 1972". I don't remember if it's in Russian or English (I mean comments)....

Loser, the men's NHL payer's were on the team.  In 1980 the US were College kids knocking off Pro's.

I grew up in Madison WI where a kid from my side of town was on the team. Bobby Suter his brother grew up and was a defenseman  in the NHL  Gary Suter. Mark Johnson was also on that team he played at the University here and his dad was the coach.  I know you hockey guys know this but others might not.

I was 16 and a guy that I knew of was on the team.

Bob was a lot older than me and as I remember it he was just this huge guy who we worshipped. becuase he was playing for the Badgers, and made it on the Olympic team

Anyway the excitement here was unbeleivable. We all thought this was the most awesome event we would ever witness. Even my father ( who does not know the difference betweena basket ball and foot ball) watched. OMG I cannot tell you how happy and excited we all were me and my buddies.   They beat the Russians this was soooooo huge.

I will never forget that day. Heck right now I could drive 2 mins go to his hockey shop and if he is there ask him questions about that time.I do not know him personally but he would give answers and tell stories, he is that kind of guy from what I hear.

Used to be fun. now it is devolving inot a bunch of folks coming to town to see what kind of riot they can start.

Started as a impromptu costume party, that just happened and got better orginised from there. The first few were so cool. no orginised activity just a bunch of people getting dressed in costumes and hanging out drinking beer from milk jugs.

I dont think there were any chemists behind the Russians. The Americans just plain outskated the Russians in the third period. They were better conditioned.

I dont think there is any way that would of happened if the Russians where juiced up.

Aubrey have you seen Suter's son Ryan play yet???? I saw him play a couple of weeks ago at an Admirals game. Man the kid is good!!! he is going to be one hell of a Hockey Player. Maybe the best in the family.

BTW wasnt Buzz Schnieder a Wisconsin guy too????
