Believe it or not, I have a wealth on experience leading troops during desert warfare. Here's a few of the lessons my many campaigns have taught me:
You can't build bases on sand! The foundations have to be laid on flat rocky areas!
Sure, enemy soldiers with rocket launchers can be a pain, but they don't stand well to being run over by tanks or other ground vehicles. Plus, the squishy sound they make is always a morale booster for your troops. Alternatively
, you could equip the loyal population with rocket launchers and let them hunt the enemy. They're expendable, who cares if they die, there's plenty more where they came from!
Forget checkpoints. Your bases should be defended with armored turrets.
The best strategy in ANY situation is to build as many units as you can, then send them towards the enemy base in a massive onslaught. They will know what to do when they get there. Your only jobs as field commander are to continue building troops and sending them into action.
Stop blaming the loss of your harvesters on terrorists. Get over it, build another one and send it for that spice. Consider them as sacrificial offers to Shai Hulud.
Helicopters are not suited for dessert warfare. Use ornitopthers!
Sometimes, new weapons are needed. I'm not talking about unmanned drones and little robots with miniguns. Hit the enemy where it hurts them. Here's some ideas:
A tank shooting ultrasonic waves that create miniature earthquakes in the target area.
A tank so big it 'devastates' whatever it hits.
A tank shooting projectiles filled with a drug that causes the enemy units to blindly obey your commands for a short time.
That's how one builds a dynasty!!!

Sounds like Dune. In C&C Generals his base would be defended by laser turrets and patriot batteries that target ground troops. Then, he could replace his entire army with a bunch of humvees, each manned by a single sniper & protected by mini-gun carrying drones.
