I'm sure many of the posters here live on the east coast..
The recent happenings made me remember again this:
http://www.cdnn.info/article/tsunami/tsunami.html
Scary stuff.
-
Nobody bothers to comment on this?
Aren't people taking it seriously or what is the problem?
-
What do you want me to do about it?
-
I remember seeing something on that on the Discovery Channel. The experts, IIRC, say that it could fall of in months, years, decades, centuries, or millenia.
And like Hawker said, not a whole lot we could do about it.
-
How often do islands just collapse into the water? This is just hype.
-
That's where you're wrong. The vulcanic activity can easily make things collapse and there's a half mountain hanging on the edge.
I have no doubt there's anything you personally could do to stop it, I was just thinking if any preparation is made in case it happens.
It just struck to me that it would be kinda hard to migrate millions of people kilometers inland in just 9 hours.

As much as I try, I can't refute your claim.

What? And destroy all that history? I don't actually live in Boston, anyway. I'm on the north shore. Losing Boston would be good for my commute.

The one thing to remember about a whole mountain breaking up is Mt. St. Helen. Back in 1980 they knew it was gonna blow, but they didn't expect that huge eruption followed by the biggest land slide in recorded history. And who knows, it might take one good eruption for a large chunk of rock to dislodge over in the canaries. Will it likely happen...no, but is it possible... definatly. Just my opinion.
-
If people would start to get worried about this it might have serious implications to the stock exchange. That's why all the media keeps quiet about it. :)
-
Are you seriously asking "why is no one worried about this" when "this" is a hypothetical? What if there is an earthquake that will cause an island to collapse and send a tsunami across the atlantic?
wtf if you want to worry about hypotheticals, why not start worring about the earths crust opening up and swallowing the entire eastern seabord or something creative.
-
Well since smarter people than you or me Hortlund think it's a possible scenario even at a relatively short timeperiod, I think that validates the question.
Of course in your perfect world we must not let anything worry us. Volcanos never erupt or tsunamis occur. Isn't it funny how all those people in the mediterranean build thier houses earthquake proof when nobody can predict when such unlikely thing will happen?

Of cource its a possible scenario. An asteroid crashing into your appartment is also a possible scenario. HIV virus mutating and becoming airborne and spreading like a new plague is also a possible scenario.
My point is that we cannot spend our time on this earth worrying about all possible scenarios that might happen. If you do that, you'll just go insane.
-
I think the UN should move every one in the potentially dangerous area to a new, safe place. And give them twice the value of their original property in the danger area. And send the bill to all the Scandinavian countries.
That's my solution.

pfft, from here on, all mail coming to scandinavia will be forwarded to "MrToad, Somewhere in the US"
-
Hey, I'm truly concerned and that's I think should be done.
-
Well, then its only fair that you pay the bill isnt it?
-
Are you sure Gilligan isn't moving the stick in the lagoon again?
-
No.
Where is "fair" made a requirement? I saw where I should be worried. I also saw where it could rock the stock market to its very foundations.
Obviously, this is a serious problem. And, to avoid rocking the stock market to its very foundations WITHOUT the tsunami, we'll have to get someone else to pay.
GScholz assures us that Norway has so much oil they don't know what to do with all the money. I'm sure the Swedes and Finns are just as well off. Who better to foot the bill for this historic humanitarian operation?
We thank you in advance.
-
Move to Kansas.
-

If I understood correctly all these examples of yours are very unlikely to happen when compared to the threat in canary islands.
The thing that puzzles me quite much is why are you clearly upset about a discussion that has no relevance to you.
-
Cuz Sweden gets 33% of the bill under my plan.
-
Siaf keep cool,
i'm sure if this thing really colapsing one day, you will get a
warning.
Something like "Tsunami Alarm! you have 10minutes to leave to Kansas"

Yeah, but then again GS has been full of **** since day 1 hasnt he.
Anyway, what kind of sick perverted socialist idea are you spouting anyway. Why should we pay for their move? They can pay themselves or stay put.

Interesting article. I found something a little more in-depth here. (http://www.es.ucsc.edu/~ward/papers/La_Palma_grl.pdf)
Found a pretty nice pic too.

Worried? naww. Not a damn thing I can do about it.
But what if a tactical sized nuc-u-lar bomb was set off by some nut that thinks canaries killed his rabbit, causing the moutain to collapse in the same manner?

This exact scenario is the key plot element in a novel I enjoyed reading recently - Scimitar SL2 by Patrick Pobinson. At the time, I had no idea the instability of Cumbre Vieja described in the book was real. Wow.

I'm reading that Bill Bryson book, "A Short History of Nearly Everything", which is pretty good I guess. I like being refreshed on that sort of stuff, and finding out the latest about what we know. But it's really starting to get annoying that every chaper ends with a disaster scenario about what might go wrong. So, if Yellowstone explodes the world might be plunged into years of total darkness. If an asteroid hits we're all toast. If the ocean currents shift... if, if, if. Well, if not, then my boss expects me at work on Monday, so I better figure on having clean underwear.

Thailand will send aid.

I'd build my new house on stooges, that's for sure.
I understand this is a very difficult dilemma, just wanted to know if people
a) Know
b) Care
c) React on it.

Not worried we are instituting warning systems as we speak.
US Unveils Expanded Tsunami Warning System Plan
