Title: < Car Noob
Post by: Furball on February 24, 2005, 12:17:48 PM
Okay... my car's heater starts and stops blowing hot air (unlike my mouth which is a constant supply ;)).

The engine temperature rises quite a lot when it goes cold.

I had this problem in my old car and i very much suspect an air blockage in the cooling system.

How do you fix this please?

Sounds like the thermostat, but I'm a crappy mechanic. I just sell the parts.

It can be either really, really easy to replace & take 10 minutes... or you'll have to tear apart half the car to get to it.

sounds like the thermostat too me as well. The thermostat regulates the water flow through the cooling system.

Probably it's getting stuck in the closed position, cutting off the water flow and causing the motor to heat up fast. The heater uses the hot water from the cooling system to heat......so when it's cut off, no heat.

Usually it's pretty easy and cheap to replace it.

Thermostat is waht I thought too.....

Does the engine temp rise a lot only when it's cold outside?  or all the time?

actually if it was the thermostat it would not be likely to get stuck in the open position.  If it was stuck in the closed position there would be no flow and you would overheat rapidly.  I have no experience with French vehicles but it doesn't sound like the thermostat to me.  Buy a reliable car.  Toyotas have worked very well for me.  :D

It's likely the Calorstat a dying calorstat can behave strangely and like Nuke said it's cheap part.

Check also how old is your cooling fluid.

First replace your heater core.  Then, if that doesn't work, try the thermostat.  Then, take it in to have it fixed under the warranty, since that's what you have a warranty for.  Finally, when they've fixed what was actually broken, ask them what it was and see if you can get a couple of minutes to talk to the actual mechanic about it, and ask him for any pointers on replacing it yourself in the future.

From the fluctuations you describe I would first look at the radiator cap itself, if the cap has become too weak to keep the system pressurized you will get overheating and fluid loss no matter the temp, if the cap is good then I would suspect a leak elsewhere in the system.

SOme older models you need to change thermostat from "Summer" to "winter", the diffrence is the degrees when it will open.

Your Frazeldebug probably has too much gleken or is over bundulated.

either way its the same procedure to fix it

Now first you gotta go to the parts store and ask for these items. Dont worry they will know exactly what you are doing and will be impressed with your knowledge of such things.

First you want a begdooglelop,
a Closed faced asexual nobble wrench,
A flobbletong.
A sledge hammer
and a left handed  I Beam spreader.

Now oonce you get those things home. You open the hood on your car

Now you take the begdooglelop and insert it under the spenzil then you take the closed faced asexual nobblewrench and turn the leddle counter counter clockwise until the begdooglelop locks into place
That being done you next take the  Flobblethong and insert the outer ring into the inner spline on the upside under portion of the leddle.

Next take the sledgehammer and smash the knuckes on your most used hand because no job is complete without at least one set of smashed knuckles. And if you dont have at least one set of smashed knuckles the repair wont hold and you will hve to keep rediong it untill you do so you might as well get it over with.

Oh the  left handed I beam Spreader?
Well thats just to hang on the wall and show off.
Just so you can say you have one.

Course you could and should always bring it to the mechanic particularly if its still under warranty.

But remember  as anyone who has brought a car back for repairs while still under warranty will tell you.
Anything that breaks while the car is under warranty will always be one of the few things not covered by the warranty. And will cost you at least a weeks pay to fix.

Parts under warranty typically if they are  going to break will break within the first 6 months AFTER the warranty has expired.
After that if it hasnt broken yet it probably never will.

Good luck

uh... is there any air comeing out of the vents when you turn on the fan?  if not, the fan motor, wiring or fuse is to blame.   Is the engine temp normal when warmed up and the fan works but no hot air?  if so... the heater core is blocked for some reason... either the controls are not letting watter in or the core is plugged and needs to be replaced.

oh... if you can grab the heater hoses and feel them when the car is warmed up it will tell yu if water is circulating through the heater core which is simply a tiny little radiator with a fan glowing on it.
