Title: Dumb question about Concealed Carry permits
Post by: Pei on February 24, 2005, 06:25:17 PM
I've been wondering about this for a while:
Why the concealed part? Why not just carry them openly? Surely it would have more preventative value?

'Cause most folks would feel nervous when a dude walks into the Walmart with a sidearm strapped to his belt.

And also not knowing who might have a gun multiplies the effect.

That, and the convenience.   If I wore a winter coat and had a pistol on my belt, it was covered by the coat.  That's concealed, and requires a permit.

Because just about every state has a law prohibiting carrying "concealable" weapons in public. For example, you can't wear a six-gun in a cowboy holster because the pistol itself is "concealable". However, in most places you can carry your .30-30 over your shoulder and walk down the street because it's not "concealable".

Remember the old cowboy movies where the sheriff made the cowpunchers check their guns when they came to town? It's sorta like that.

A concealed carry permit really means you can carry "concealable" weapons in public. You have to have it hidden though, I'm pretty sure.

So if it wasn't concealed you wouldn't need a special permit?

A concealed carry permit really means you can carry "concealable" weapons in public. I think you could wear your six-gun on your hip if you had a permit. I'd have to check though.

OK that makes more sense.

The laws vary from state to state.

In Maine where I grew up, if the pistol wasn't concealed, I wouldn't need a permit.  Now that I live in Massachusetts, I would.

If you have ever carried a hand gun you know what a pain it is.
Dern thing gets snagged on your seatbelt and always banging up against something.

They are just plain bulky but if you have a weenie holster" you know the ones that go down your pants right on top of mr happy"

Now those ain't to bad and unless someone grabs your johnson they will never know who had one.

Now back to this case that sparked this thread.
One would have to be very carefully in a tight confined space like this.

It is possible that bubba might just take your gun away from you.
And contrary to popular belief people do not always just drop when shot.

Judging the anatomy of this dude I believe it would take a head shot to stop him in his tracks.

When I was working my trauma rotations at Methodist medical center in the heat of Oak Cliff "high crime area of south Dallas"

They brought in a big guy like this he had been shot 5 times with a 38.

He was still, very much alive and talking up a blue steak.

He live with no effects of his wounds.

So it is very hard for a civilian like you and me to be able to make that decision on whether to pull you gun or not.
I think a clean shot would have been very very hard in that pizza parlor.

The great thing about Texas is you may carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in your vehicle as long as it's visable EI: like on a gun rack in the rear window of a pick up.

And you may also carry a loaed hand gun with ut permit in Texas if you are traveling more that one county from your home.

In some states.  Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky and Hawaii (only states I've lived in) require a CARRY permit, which is different from a CONCEALED CARRY permit.  I do not know of ANY state which has an "open carry" permit for private citizens.  Open carry allows you to carry a weapon in a holster, clearly visible on your belt.  This is usually only issued to people with an Armed Security permit.

I know in Missouri, or at least in St Louis County, all security guards are required to be licensed, and armed security is another license on top of that, which inlcudes a carry permit.  It restricts you to no more than .38 caliber revolver holding no more than 6 rounds.  You can only have the weapon on your person for 1 hour before, during, and 1 hour after being on duty.  You pass a gun course at a police sanctioned shooting range (usually the same place where the police dept qualifies, only the security course is much more limited).  Missouri does allow Concealed Carry with several restrictions.

In Hawaii, regular security guards are not individually licensed, only the individual running the company is licensed and is responsible for the guards who work for him.  Armed security can go to any Police approved gun shop and take the course to qualify for a Carry Permit and Armed Security license.  I dont know if they have restrictions on size or caliber here, I havent needed to apply for an armed license in Hawaii yet.  Hawaii DOES have a Concealed Carry permit, but they are never issued so its really rather useless.  Matter of fact, since the law has been on the books only ONE permit has ever been issued, and that was to an ex-police officer.

In Illinois the only time you can wear a handgun openly is when hunting (yes they have a Handgun season for Deer in Illinois).  I have no idea what the restrictions are for an open carry permit for armed security, although I know they do have a license for them.  No Concealed Carry in Illinois either.  Note that just because you are hunting with a handgun does not mean you have a license to carry a weapon.  Just like with shotguns and rifles, you must unload them and put them away before getting in the vehicle.  Ammo must be separate from the gun.

Kentucky is fairly permissive.  You can openly wear a handgun in the field when hunting (for self defense), and you can carry a loaded gun in your truck (I'd say vehicle, but ............ well its Kentucky).  Kentucky does have Concealed Carry.  My dad carries a MAC-9 with a 32 round Sten magazine in his Blazer.  Go figure.

If you want a decent breakdown of all the state laws for concealed carry, try here.

I used to walk around here in GA with my gun out in the open on my belt.  Only hassle I ever got from the law was a day I had bought a new pistol, and didn't have a holster for it yet so just had it stuck in my belt.  Cop told me I had to have it holstered or not carry it.

But I'd have to say, these days in some places, I wouldn't carry openly unless you were ready and prepared to use it, cause some jackarse will step up and make ya put up or shut up.

Pretty sure in NH anyone can carry openly but concealed requires permit from local cops.

The moment you carry an open fire arm, you yourself are a target.

Because until the crime actually happens, you don't know who the criminal is.  He could be the guy to your right.  He could see the gun and blow you away before anything else.

In arizona you can carry a gun on your person no problem.....I just HAS to be loaded...by law even.

You cant carry it into bars or stores that sell guns or school zones ect.

also it has to be visable on 3 sides of your body.  Out in the smaller towns you see a lot of people that carry guns on them and its no big deal.  Alot of bikers on the highway will also have them.
