Even after all the hype I am still impressed. The 'Ring, Laguna Seca, Sears Point, those alone make it worth the price. Here's some shots of my garage so far.

Dinger will remember this one.

Is this a console only? I enjoyed GT3 ton when it first came out, and you car tards are hootin and hollerin over 4 :)
-
The graphics are amazing. Too bad it lacks the realism that would make this game an absolute winner. No damage modeling, arcade physics etc. I'm really tempted to get it but it's questionable if I'd ever bother to actually play it.
-
Actually the physics are very good in 4 if you turn off all the driving aids.
-
I saw a game review that complained about the physics. They compared GT4 to the new MS racer which name I can't recall now.
If a demo gets out I must try it.
-
well they went the route of modelling 700 something cars instead of damage models, which is fine for me.
i'll say right now that my car in game handles (and more importantly) brakes very similar to my actual rx7..
-
I love it so far...
I bought an old used Acura NSX.. I love that car.
Bought an 86 RX7, I hate that car, it sucks.
Bought a 2005 Mustang GT, it is nice but not as good as the NSX is...
Won a Chevelle, dropped an assload of money into it and it still sucks... that pisses me off. It is faster than hell, but it can't turn at all. Not even a little bit.
-
Funked,
Were did you manage to buy it from?
-
Idiot that I am... I bought a PS2 solely for the purpose of playing this game...
Need that CSL...

This isn't coming out for the PC?

No. PS 2 only. Have to wait until 9 March, then I can knock out some dry training on the ring. Guardrails there can be expensive.
Yep, beer and brats at the ring http://members.home.nl/schillings/AF.wmv
-
GTO I pre-ordered it from gogamer.com. But I'm hearing lots of people having success just going to stores and finding it. They had confidence enough to ship a crapload of them.
Also regarding realism, remember I am using the Driving Force Pro wheel. If you are using a gamepad or a lesser wheel, the game has to dumb down the steering to make it playable. With the DFP and all the driving aids turned off, the cars handle much as one would expect.

No. Sony does this to make sure you buy a PS2. I know a lot of people (self included) who bought a PS2 just to play the GT series.
-
I bought a PS2 for GT3 lol.
It is now in WA, so I will be buying another for this game lol.
I loved 2, the 60s cars were a blast.
this looks even better.
Funked, How do your steering wheel work? DOes it clamp to a table or can you use it from a chair or bean bag?
-
Yup, me 2.
GT was awesome. GT2 was even better. GT3.....was kinda a let down.
GT4....ain't out in Britain until the 7th of March. :(

yeah GT3 was a bit of a let down. Loaded it up and was like
this is a jip! were did the 69 Camaro go!!
I gues I will go check frys in the morning, lol the paint ball gun can wait tell next month hehe

Just clamp it to a sturdy table. If the edges of the table aren't the right shape/size you can just use some c-clamps and plywood or 2x4 scraps to rig it up. The main thing is to have a sturdy enough table and enough clearance under it for your knees so you can use the pedals.
Also the DFP is fully PC compatible, works great.

I wonder if I can hook a PS2 to my Viewsonic VP201?
Then I could use my desk lol.

How does the finished game compare to the Prologe version?

Hmm.. it's only available for PS2? That does it for me.. I can stop drooling after it. :)

I think my biggest problem is I don't know a lot about cars, so I just went and upgraded the horsepower by dropping in bigger exhaust and other HP options... you can buy stuff like a new suspension that you can set up yourself.. but I wouldn't know where to start with that kind of thing.
I'll play around with it some once I get some more races won and some more money to drop into that beast lol.
It is a badass looking car though, my favorite one to look at that I have in the virtual garage.
-
Setups are everything in some cars.
What I really miss is the HP/TQ-gear ratios overlay. It was so easy to match the two/three together to spank "faster" cars with that. Repeatedly beat friends' LM cars with rally cars or "homemade" [R] cars..
Shame they always took out features without replacing or adding alternatives like that..
-
bah!
I am cursed, found the game but no one has PS2s!
lol
Some frys guy said the factory got taken out in the tidal wave!
-
My brother and I are really into this game. We're both the tuner types and were always tweaking stuff. He's driving a Dodge SRT-4, while I can be found driving the DeLorean DMC12. If I could get a flash drive to work I'd post some pics but we can't get anything to work right. :(
-
Well, if anyone wants to give me any tips on tuning that Chevelle I'd appreciate it :)

this might help ya a little... was posted for GT2/3, but the theories still apply.

I'm sure they'll start getting GT4 setup info in there soon enough (though it'll prolly start in the GT4 gen discussion forum first).

I tell ya.. I love the new GT4..
I'm happy to see Mistu Galant VR-4.. man whata fun car to run! 1964 Ginetta G4 is a blast to drive..And that wild Caddy Cien geeebuss... whata ild car that is to drive.
-
I've never owned a gaming console in my life and never will.
You know, regular PS2 games cost $92 a piece down here.
-
Urchin,
I suppose your referring to understeer in int your Chevell. So give it a bit more camber in the front like around 2.5 ish and around 1.2 in the rear. Give it a bit more rear sway bar 2 more settings up from what is listed and go one click down on the front.. Stiffen the rear shocks 2 settings up as well.
This should give the car more of a tighter rear end. I prefer a little oversteer as opposed to understeer. Keep adjusting the swaybar and shocks till you get a little oversteer. I hope that helps.
-
I like a tight rear end, good response and pleasant shocks on ladies.

Also Google for GT4 setups and see if somebody else has figured out a setup for that car.

Those Ginettas are neat cars.
My favorite of the last 24 hours is the Lotus Europa Special. Perfect balance.
I also have that Charger just about maxed out now. About 550 hp with handling and brakes to match. I kept the stock exhaust though, good V8 sound.
I won a Chevelle too, and I'll try to come up with a good setup for Urchin.

ive decided that when i win the lottery the first car im going to buy is the esprit..
ive seen em at local shows, and they're mean looking, but damn dont they handle fine.. mmm

Got my copy yesterday. Got the Nike 2022 concept, a few other crap concepts I can't sell, 4 Nismo R400s, a 320hp MR2, & a Nur-spec Skyline. It's a good game, but not up to the hype. No damage models, the regular ps2 controllers are inferior to xbox controllers for racing (need a seperate analog for the brake), there's no damage models (iirc because the manufacturers refuse to see their cars take damage), and the tuner selection is crap. Why even have the different tuners if there's no difference in the quality/price of the upgrades?
Worth the $50... but just barely.
-
I *like* the Nismo 400R... it has 395 HP stock, and it handles fantastic. I might pimp that sucker out and use it for the harder races.

There's no physical damage because it would have taken two or more discs to get all the textures and physics into the game. That and the PS2 cannot handle much more physics processing.
The PS2 controller isn't meant to be used for this game. Find the wheel and use it. It makes it much better. I refuse to belive anything on the Xbox is xuperior to any console, period. ;)
There are differences in the upgrades, as some of the manufacturer upgrades cost less or produce more of an effect than the dealer upgrades.
-
I was curious about that, hadn't noticed any difference in the couple cars I compared.

What kind of 1/4-mile times could a 900 HP car expect?
I won a Camaro race car that I dropped a Turbo into, pushing it up to 900 HP, but I can't seem to break 10 seconds in the 1/4 mile.
I think the best I've ever gotten was 10.0010.

Plus, turn the damn nanny bot all the way off. The nanny just won't let you use the throttle to steer the way you would in real life. And it seems the nanny is much more nannicious than in GT3. I dropped 4 sec in an S2k on Tsukuba just by turnning the nanny off.
-
i love the NSX in that game... but why not too many people own that car (besides sub 100K price)?

Tip for newbies
I don't have too much time to play, I started with a Cheap celica 4WD. I hooked up a stage 2 turbo + NOS + handling.
I went to the "special events", passed the first one that gave me the Cady 750HP monster. The Cady makes me win all the authorized races with my finger in the nose "American hot rod who gives the Chevelle, MR beginner chalenge ..."
I used the boosted celica to win the Second special event race, capri rally hands down that gives a toyota rally car 2002 worth $234,000 takes about 15 minutes total.
Repeat, make $234,000.00 per 15 minutes ... buy what you want. Don't struggle with the small stuff.
I bought my long forbidden love, the 1967 Toyota 2000 GT:

cruising around my favorite track: The 8km something Nord. (Nurburing):aok

BTW, great 2000 GT website for the classic lovers (http://www.ies-geneve.ch/2000gt/)
-
Can someone do me a favor and find out if there's an Ford Taurus SHO in this one like there was in GT2?
If there is, I'll have to check it out.
-
yes in the used car lots, goes for 14K, the 1998.
-
hey, where can i turn off tcs and abs crap in turismo mode? i shut it off in arcade but i cant find it in my career and its driving me nuts
im not getting anything done in this damn game other then taking tons of photos, lol
-
To turn off the driving aids "Nanny" in Gran Tourismo mode, you have to go into the setup menu when you are at the track. There is an item at the middle bottom of the setup screen which lets you set the traction control & abs strength and the strength of the understeer/oversteer nanny. For some modern cars it's quite realistic to leave those turned on, but in general it is a lot more fun with them turned off.

I passed through 35% tonight. I want all the prize cars, and I'm going through it using B-Spec.

Better do some Aspec and practice =)
There's 5 prize cars in the mission area and 1 for each level of license (bronze, silver, and gold, 15cars total).
-
Yep I have the prize car list.
B-spec lets you accelerate time by a factor of 3. I don't find racing the crappy AI drivers challenging or entertaining, so I am letting the B-spec bot do as much as possible. I drive the A-spec only stuff (licenses, missions, rally, etc) and some of the more interesting races that aren't too long.

My 1100hp TVR Speed 12 (stage 4 + supercharger + NOS + everything else that can be stuck on it) only runs 10.08 in the quarter... but on top speed tests, maxes out at 285.7mph. That's after tuning the tranny, suspension, & downforce for awhile.. more I tuned, slower it went... Gets to the point where the engine can no longer overcome the air resistance I believe.
Got licenses B - IA, got a 850hp Skyline for Japan, a 780hp NA Ford GT for the US races, & a 980hp Zonda + 1100hp TVR Speed 12 for Euro racing.. found if you win the Japan Championship it gives you a Nismo Z Concept LM Race Car that you can sell for 350k... and it's a pretty easy series. Tonight it's time to build a rally car & sport truck, plus a vew low end models to wrap up the beginner & pro series.
-
BTW I made a Stage 4 + NOS Subaru 360. Yes I won. :)
-
Can you post the price car list Funked? I am not too interested by 1000 HP UFOs.
Quickest money I found so far is $264,000 for 2 2lap races at special condition race two (Capri), doesn't require a monster car to win.
-
Geezzzbuss Funky your just zooming right along.. I'm only at 15%
I just finished my uber Benz 950hp AMG SLK65 it likes to roast tires all the way though 3rd gear. I think a taller rear gear will hopefully fix that issue.
-
Yeah Frenchy thats the quickest way to get cash is to run capri over and over... I ran it with my 89 Mistu Galant VR-4
-
Do you still have to do all the driving test to get licensees?
Man those are a pain!
-

The lack of visible damage always has been and always will be a licensing issue. Many car manufacturers will not allow their products to be shown with any kind of cosmetic damage.
Is visible damage worth losing 3/4 of the cars in the game? If so you might want to check out TOCA Race Driver 2 which is actually a pretty decent racer but has nowhere near the number of cars as GT.
-
GT4 is still fairly arcadish even with the nany turn off (Has even to be on sometime on full "counter-understeer" to simulate some king of oversteer).:(
But should be good enought till Forza comes along ... online racing and custom rides is the only way to go nowadays.
-
I really don't know why there are so many cars in GT4, possibly because it's been a stple of the GT series for so many years to have a large number of cars with the best possible physics.
Besides the licensing issue, which you're spot on with, there's really no need to show damage to these vehicles. Consider this, in a NASCAR game, they accurately detail damage and the physical downside of it because admage is a part of the race. You're always door handle to door handle and someone's going to bite the dust at some point. When you're racing in the GT series, you're not "supposed" to crash into things. Some of the things I've seen my friends do would total a car with a single blow. If the game did that, you'd have to buy a new car and sit out a week while you recover. Doesn't make for a very fun game when you have to keep buying cars left and right or keep spending money on repairs because you don't know how to drive. :(
I'm not saying you don't know how to play the game. I'm actually making a statement based on how all my friends and their friends play the game. I'm strange, as I actually like the tests and like "driving" the cars while everyone else I know will do everything possible to win and beat the game. They will, as we all like to put it, "game the game."
Certainly GT4 has an insane number of cars and a large number of tracks while TOCA is a good racer it doesn't come close to GT4 in my opinion. Comparing them side by side, they look about the same to me and GT4 seems to drive better for me. I'm a little biased because I still have the original three GTs in my room somewhere and I've played them forever. Not that TOCA isn't a good game, it's just not my cup of tea.
Besides, what other game lets you take pictures of a DeLorean DMC 12 stomping all over an RX-7. :D

It's not as bad as you think. I did B to IB in 1 sitting. Two hours tops (including Sit-N-Wait-Station load times).. only 2 tests from wrapping up IA, Nurburgring hotlap & the grad test. Problem with the Nur hotlap is the pace car system they use now. I've played the track so many times I pick a faster line than it does, and it fails you if you overtake.
I am not too interested by 1000 HP UFOs.
If it can't go 200+ mph, it doesn't have a place in my garage.. except for a handful of niche cars (1 boxer, 1 convertible, 1 classic, etc, etc) :) You can already drive any of the cars in arcade mode from what I saw of it, so I sell them as fast I win them. I B-mode'd my way to riches, and now I'm going through and beating all the circuits in A-spec. More fun for me :)

So the tests are easier then say GT3?
-
Texace, I agree for GT racing and above, but GT4 also brings to you the Euro championships such as BTCC, and the week end warriors. Those are the ones where you can actually "rubbing is racing". A time penalty for "hitting", is a good cheap alternative to prevent the "wall bouncing no brake turn".
Indy, the fun for me is to drive an old classic. Thundering into the corner riding the fin equilibrium of the road bite, escaping with a slight oversteer at the exit. Not having much power, braking and grip makes you constently try to ride the edge, knowing that when you pass it you are up for a time costly power slide. That's my fun:p Like when I drive my real life 1973 trantran. Kind of like the pilot saying: Jets are for kids
When it's finally the week end, I ditch the F250 with the ladder rack, remove the car cover from the trantran, warm the engine up and go see my girlfriend. I don't know if I have more pleasure knowing that I'm going to get laid, or by knowing I'll be driving my car for 2 days.:lol
-
So the tests are easier then say GT3?
Mostly yes, some no. I got passed 90% of the tests the first time I tried. Won silver about 25% of the time, gold maybe 10%. It's just wierd getting used to new phsyics and the cars they make you drive. Half the time I'd enter the first corner not knowing if my car was FF, FR, or AWD.

Thankfully, I am a kid :) This weekend we'll be running however many people it lets into LAN play... flashbacks to PGR2 on xbox... all my friends drive very clean, but extremely aggressive and the track is filled with JGTC cars... so I build garages full of different UFOs to stay competitive with their "real" cars. Just gotta have a car built & tuned for every single track setup :)
-
lan play is bizaare...
you gotta select 30 favorites cuz it only allows those and certain arcade models..and cars you buy in turismo mode can be put as favorites, but nothing from your garage
so basically once you get down to it, no tuned up races.. which is ok i guess, though not the best setup
other then that lan play is awesome.. love drivin the 500hp cars with my friends in nurumburg, that race is somethin else

Fantastic!!!!

Really great stuff, does anyone know of a page that list car setups, I am doing ok with my own but I would like to compare.

I got my Pagani Zonda to run 8.75 @ 165-ish on the 400m strip, and still push over 230 flat out with the same gear ratio...
Finally getting an appreciation for the classics. Having alot of fun in a midly tuned Toyota 2000GT :)

I'm torn between school-work and WoW.. unfortunately GT4 is kind of on the shelf for now. I did make a lil over a million bucks doing that trick though lol.

Those are both in the rally section, but Tsukuba Wet gets added to World Circuits eventually and I think Chamonix is also in the Dirty & Snow section.

I wish they had more classic US stuff.
70-73 Trans am or Formula.
61-64 SS 409 impalla.
68 or 69 GTO or 69 Judge
Old 442 any year.
70 AAR cuda
68 GT500 KR
67 SS/RS 396 Camaro
and so many more.
Heck even a shoe box Chevy would be cool.

There's quite enough live axle road whales already. :)
I think the game is aimed more at Road & Track types than Motor Trend readers. :D
-
Bah!
They packed in every honda and Nissain ever made. They need more GOOD cars!
Live axles rock!:D
-
2000 Z06. wtf.
-
Dropping just one bike in the game woulda been fun.
Superbike I MEAN 1843 Indian woulda been cool to spurt against the faster road cars and some of the [R] cars.
-
Bleh... I've been waiting for an 87-93 Mustang GT since GT2...
I'd have liked to see more American stuff too, but I think it is more of a "ricer" game. That is cool, they still have some American stuff, and Porsches, which are my second favorite car.
One curious thing I was wondering if someone could explain. I bought a '00 Mustang Cobra... and AFTER all the HP add-ons it could only get to ~550 HP. I then went to put a supercharger on it, except the HP before was like 3 hp higher than the HP "after".... so whats the deal?
How can putting a supercharger on the car DROP the horsepower? That doesn't make any sense to me.
-
The only reasion I am going to buy Forza is because of Road Atlanta being one of the tracks. I am good friends with Jim Downing of Downing Atlanta racing and whenever they rent the track out for the day to test one of there car you bet your bellybutton you can find me out there in my Mustang running the track to. I love that track. It is a blast to scream out there holding the turns...it is up there with sex... well maybe not.. but a close second.

Putting on a supercharger removes any NA Tuning mods you put on your car. Also I've noticed that some mods match up better & make more power. On several of my cars the racing exhaust makes less power than the sports exhaust. Depends on the level of tuning.
-
Just a quick power note for those who may not know... when you buy a new car (or used one with 6.2miles on it) go straight to GT Auto and change the oil before you put it on any track. This will give you a 5% boost in your horsepower. You can tune/mod the car and then go change the oil and still get the boost, but once you put the car on a track you lose the opportunity.

You also gain more power over time as the engine breaks in. The Zonda C12S 7.3 that I'm so fond of started with 547hp. After stage 3 NA tune and the rest of the bells & whistles, it was up to around 950. After a couple trips down the Mulsanne Straight & some laps on the Nurburgring, and no oil changes, it's pushing 984hp and still climbing. :)
