I have information pertaining to the Night Fighter P-38J and M models. I have to do some more investigating but I know for a fact that there was a P-38J Night fighter that did not have external radar on the wings and Nose like the M model. here is where i got the info and I will post when I find a pick of an P-38J Nightfighter.

I also made the Night Fighter skin on AH-Skins.com under AWJager for the L model

Here's your bird, or one of the two P38Fs modified in Australia to the night fighter role with the 6th NFS.
No Js that I'm aware of

549th had P61s on Iwo. If it was a 38 it would have been an M model not a field modified J as it would have made little sense to use a field mod J when they already had Black Widows.
That Pacific Wrecks doesn't list a serial number, leaves the issue in doubt too. It could also have been that Nagle was out for a ride in a war weary 38 and got lost as there is no second passenger/radar op listed.

Look at this boys...Its a P-38J painted to look like a "droopsnoot". Which was a 2 man crew 38. But as a I said, this is a plain P-38J painted like one....so can I procceed in painting this beautiful "Betsy VI"???? :)
I have finally found it :)

Here is another one. "Double trouble" was the nickname in its service http://p38assn.org/surviving.htm
and here is some more pics AND movies of the plane.

Not to be a pain, but it was common practice on regular Js that flew with the droopsnoots, to polish the nose up in unpainted metal in hopes of protecting the droopsnoot.
Can you point to "Betsy VI". Not sure which bird that is.

Um...er... Double Trouble was a photo recce F5G that was later modified for racing with the smaller intakes etc.
Not sure the connection to a night fighter P38?

And before you point to Scatterbrain Kid with its second seat :)
Those parts for the second seat came from a P38M that was returned from South America in the 60s along with some Ls.
The owner of the M model, wanted a regular fighter version and swapped parts so that the J has the M's second seat and canopy while the M now looks like a regular L.

OK found Besty VI. THere are 20th FG Js done I think, but why not go for it? OD/Gray J with the polished nose to help camo the droop snoots.
Looks like a good one :)
