I'm rather surprised this story hasn't found its way here.
The guy left a very well paying job to re-join the Marines after 911.
He's now being charged with pre-meditated murder for the death of two Iraqi.
His mother has a website here (http://www.defendthedefenders.org/pages/1/index.htm)
and there are quite a few news stories and blogs about it.

From what I've googled (http://www.google.com/search?q=Ilario+Pantano) so far, it seems that there are people screaming about this on both the left and the right.

Maybe I'm missing some piece of information, but why are they prosecuting this guy?
-
he will be found innocent
-
Unfortunate that this guy's record will forever be tarnished with this.

The most suspect part of the story is this:
"After setting up a security perimeter, Lt. Pantano took off the cuffs and had the two search the vehicle as he supervised. If it was booby-trapped, the Iraqis, not Marines, would pay the price."
I bet uncuffing already tied suspects and having them handling supposed weapons or explosives is against at least one (or maybe all) among: the Geneva convention, the UCMJ, the ROE for troops in Iraq or just plain common sense.
Don't put your prisoners in a position in which you could have to shoot them and you won't have to shoot them.
And the dead guys were clean after all...

lol the avatar is great takeda.

Also, says the accuser says he relieved the other guards and sent them away, also shot the two in the back and then put a sign on their SUV. Only question I really got is do you really want the Iraqi's to search their own car? Arent they liable to set off the "said" booby trap?
