Not sure if this will help making maps, but here is a neat play toy from NASA:
World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there.

I don't think Heater has a choice about running .NET. ;) (sigh, same goes for me)
But yes, heads up is required if you are not using that **** for anything else than work.

I tried it, and did a system restore after removing world wind.
.NET arbitrarily changed some critical security settings in the registry. Which I was unaware of until I rebooted the systemand it asked for users to log on that don't use this computer. NOT something any software should do.
