I have a problem whit my CPU going into overheat alarm during game play.
It's not over clocked and it does have a big heat sink with a volcano fan. I got the copper shim and Im using the thermal paste.
Its an AMD XP1800 on an ASUS A7N8X. Would adding a case fan help or is this just a sign of a worn out CPU?

Have you checked to see if the heat sink is clogged with dust? Make sure the fan is free of dust as well.

Might be a sign of a worn out CPU fan. Or case fan. Or both. My old 1800+ didnt put out much in the way of heat, so just a guess, but I'd say the CPU fan is dying. Either that or dust has had its way inside your computer. :)

It's possible the heatsink wiggled a bit loose too. You could remove it, reapply the paste, and put the heatsink back on.
Make sure you don't get any paste on the shim or it will be too tall and the heatsink won't contact the cpu core. No paste at all on the shim. Just a little on the cpu core itself, none on the heatsink before putting it on.

What's funny is it comes and goes. I was playing tonite without any alarms at all. I'm gonna tear it apart this weekend, clean it up and reinstall everything.

I had terrible trouble with an overheating 1800xp. The early xps were terrible for heat. Check your fans. Condsider extra case fans.

Consider a whole case fan. It makes your system a little noisier but it made a big difference for me.
It cools the air your heatsink fan uses to cool with. Easy 10 bucks.

My computer shut down last night I'm guessing due to overheating. I will restart it and it will run for a few mins then shut down again. I checked the temp monitor and it was at 93 degrees C!!:eek:
Now I already know that the monitor can be off by a couple degrees but jesus either way that is still pretty damn hot. I checked the rpms of my CPU fan and it is running at aroudn 2400-2600 rpms. If I'm not mistaken isnt that a bit low? So should I consider a new CPU fan, a case fan and Arctic Cool soon? Or would a case fan do the trick? Thanks

If your CPU temp is 93 degrees C you better change something! Unless my math is way off, thats like 200 degrees farenheit!
First of all, I'd check to make sure you still have good contact between the CPU and the heatsink. Take it off, look for warpage and check the thermal paste to make sure it hasnt gone south with age and heat. Make sure the heatsink itself isnt clogged up with dust. It happens alot. Clean any dust out and clean off the old paste. Apply new paste and reinstall the heat sink.
As for the fan, some run at 2400 - 2500 rpm, some run at 4900 - 5000 rpm. Not knowing which yours is, I can only guess it is running at the proper speed. I'd still replace it. Heatsink fans arent expensive. I'd also buy one of the higher rpm fans too while I was changing it anyway.

which cpu rightfoot?? I would pull the heatsink off and clean it . then apply a thin coat of artic silver and go from there. some cpu fans only spin at 2500 rpm . some are variable depending on the cpu load and heat too , so it hard to say ... 90C sounds like the heatsink isnt seated right or the bond from the pad or thermal past is messed ... Kinda unrelated, but when I was new at compies I tried to replace the fan and heatsink but messed up bad. Checked the temp before I shut it down. 109 degrees C. The motherboard had melted to the case, and as you can imagine, it never booted again.

Yeah. It may already be too late if it hit 90 degrees C, but its worth a shot. Even if you have to buy a new heatsink and fan, you are out what, 20 or 30 bucks? Good ones are much more of course, but I rather got the impression you are talking about a stock system without any OC or mods to it, and that it didnt generally produce lots of heat before.

When you take off the heatsink be carefull, often the heatsink is stuck to the processor since the thermal paste starts to get sticky when old and heated enogh.
Try to run open case and clean the dust out of the heatsink.
I would not remove the heatsink if the temp you get with open case and cleaned heatsink is below 60 C.
The processor itself does not run hotter when it goes bad. It gets older and some time it gets errors while running, freezing or blue screening the system without heat alarm.
But when it runs to hot the aging is accelerated, so instead of failing in 10 to 20 years it fails in 1 to 10 month. That is why you want to get that temp down.
The temprature your motherboard shows is only a guess, it might be your processor itself is hotter or cooler, since the temp sensor is below the processor and not in it, it adds some degrees to the measured temp.

OK....in my past I was an electronics technician....I worked on ATC RADAR.
For that reason alone I should probably get my arse kicked for this post.
I pulled off the heatsink (the fan is attached to it) and removed the copper shim.
Un bolted the fan and viaola! A cat couldnt have made a bigger hair/dust ball. I broke out the PC clean (lemon scented) and used half the can on just the heat sink and fan.
Than I soaked the shim in viniger to remove the crud that had built up on the top side.
I wiped down the CUP and heat sink to remove all the old thermal paste.
added a drop.
Reinstalled the CPU/Fan
Blew out the whole case and powersupply and booted.
During game play it never gets above 45C now
I should have done this first thing but I guess I'm losing all my troubleshooting skills as of late. :p

I live with 3 cats, I've learned the hard way that I need to clean fans at least twice a year.
BTW, if your CPU fan is that bad, best take a look at the power supply fan also!
