Title: Padlock?
Post by: Syzygyone on August 29, 2001, 12:46:00 PM
Anyone use padlock successfully?  How do you keep sense of where your nose is when the padlock follows the bogie away from nose of plane?

Cya UP!
   :rolleyes: "Lost that bogie again!"
   :eek: "Bogie's on my six again"

Hello,

At one point in my online flight career, I was totally addicted to padlock.  I have since been cured.  Without peripheral vision it is difficult at best to keep yourself oriented.  This is why most games with PL put other indicators in the help keep you oriented.

The view system in this game and a good hat switch are far superior to a padlock system.  For help with AH's views see Lephturn's article at  http://users.andara.com/~sconrad/views.htm (http://users.andara.com/~sconrad/views.htm)  .

The frantic search for a bogey that went under your nose is so much more immersive than a PL just aiming your view at where the craft will be.

I agree Furious. I used PL allot in CFS. Never used it again in AH. It doesn't do your situational awareness any good to focus on just one plane at all. A good view system setup is very important.

I used to use Outside Padelock in flight sims, where the camera postion was outside the plane and stayed level with the ground.  I could judge my postion and the enemies postion at a glance.

However, I had never experience the "Air Warrior" view system before.  Now I don't like anything else.

Stickset 1;

Hatup = Up view
Hatleft = Left view
Hatright = Right view
Hatdown = Rear view
Button 3 = Switch to stickset 2

Stickset 2;

Hatup = Up/Forward view
Hatleft = Up/left view
Hatright = Up/right view
Hatdown = Up/rear view
Button 3 = Switch to stickset 1

With this simple concept of multiple joystick configurations that you can switch between on the fly is simply awesome.  It works like a charm.  WarBirds and now Aces High make configuring your controls to do more with less perfect.

I don't use that damn Padalock view.  It has no advantages and some drawbacks over manual view control.
