I think 1st you have to decide Intel or AMD.

I would only go Intel if you can get a Northwood CPU (designated with a 'C' i.e. 3.0C) and not a Prescott.  Also I would only consider an Intel motherboard if it uses DDR1 ram and not DDR2.

It all depends on what you want...the socket 939 AMD 64's are the future. However, you can get a great deal on a socket 754 right now. I decided to go AGP/754 instead of PCI-e/939...

That was based on my tendancy to tinker and build every 18 months or so...I just dont think that the "upgradability" of the 939 is a sure thing. Since SLI under PCI-e is program dependent (as of now) how can you tell if it'll be worth it.

All in all, if your planning on a "3-5 year" box...go AMD/939. If you think your going to tinker sooner then I'd go 754. I'm very happy with the DFI lanparty board (754) I got. Matched up with a gigabyte X800pro I'm set till the itch returns:)

All the socket 939 boards are good. It's what you put in them.

CPU is your choice, if you can afford it an AMD64 3500 is good midrange chip.

Get good quality fast (CAS 2) RAM and your good to go. Make sure you get two sticks so you utilise the dual channel memory capability.

I actually have the same question:

my brother swears by this MB

DFI "LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb"

I was thinking that coupled with an AMD 64 2800 for now.

I don't usually run the latest "screaming" machine and tend to upgrade every 18-24 months.

My only question is what's the minimum rating on the P/S for it.  I've heard a 350W wont be enough?

Should be more than enough. AMD64 are very low power users compared to Athlon XPs or P4's.
