I just installed a Chaintech GeForce 5700....installation went ok, evrything looks ok but none of my games will start (especially AH).
Whenever I try to start AH I just get dumped back to the desktop from the 1st white screen. Have tried reinstalling both AH and the drivers for the card...can anyone help plz!? Thx in advance...aztec<<

Did you upgrade from an Ati card or nvidia?
-
no....it seems that in the process of installing the new vid card my soundblaster live has gone tits up. I'm assuming this is my prob. I should have kept my hands off it....I know better. (*^%#^&$ computers, now where did I leave my beer?
-
Heh.. he said soundblaster.

:lol

I can't for the life of me remember what the things are you check for problems like this. It's a number designated to all of your hardware by Windoze and if two devices get the same one, Windoze eats it. Well, doesn't use it.
Also try going into the Display Settings and setting your monitor to all of the resolutions. Select the lowest one, hit Apply, select the next one, hit Apply...it saves the data on the different resolutions. Some games will try to start up in a different resolution than you're running, will call for the data, not get it, and ditch themselves.
Gotta learn to type slower. This stuff's killin me! :D

Heh Ooz they're called interrupts and they have been handled automatically for ages. It's very unlikely that the interrupts are the problem there, although it can't be ruled out either.
Creative has sunk down in quality continuously, I never buy anything from that brand anymore.
They ruled 5 years ago, now the products are low quality or simply obsolete.
-
I don't think those were it. People have been reccomending to check them whenever something does that. I'll search around and see if I can figure them out. It was a 3 letter abbreviation.
EDIT: IRQ! Yeah! lol

No offense Siaf, but the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum card I have has been perfect in every way. Low CPU usage, and stable as can be.
I have one other sound card which sounds better, but it is a $1500 sound card and does not have any DirectX support.
The ASIO drivers, from Creative, have been outstanding as well. But to record at 96Khz using them, you need one very fast system or you end up with gaps in the sound.
96Khz sample rates through DirectSound is not problem though. ASIO just puts a lot of stress on the hardware in the computer, in general as it is as close to real-time as we can get in computer sound.
The only nit I have about it, is setting it up for external clocks so it keeps sync with other devices. By default it is not setup that way. No biggie if you know about it.
The only people I know who have any troubles with any of the later SB cards are all AMD owners. I have no experience there, but I think it says something.

I got the sound card issue straightened out but the FX 5700 locks up my pute in AH and Mohaa, usually about 5 minutes into the game. In Ah the lockup freezes the screen and the cpu howls like a cut cat. Tried newer drivers...games lock up in the start process.Uninstall/reinstall, AH, drivers, and everything I can think of. Will accept any advice willingly!!:) thx, aztec

what card did you upgrade from ?? If you are using a different brand of card, Did you uninstall all the old drivers for your old card , then use driver cleaner to get rid of the leftover bits? How about heat . could be alot of different things. I always reformat when installing a new Video card. You could reinstall direct x then the new video driver to see if that helps as well GL 38
-
I upgraded from a GeForce 2 Ultra. I didn't use driver cleaner...my experience with Detonator Destroyer in the past wasn't a good one...although my tired old brainpan can't remember why.
Heat is not an issue...my cpu runs around 45C while running AH and case is much cooler.
If you could recomend a driver cleaner would be willing to try that again...also reinstalling dx9 sounds like a good possibility but I have no Idea how. Thank you Ruk, your help is appreciated! , az

Hey Aztec. I've never had a problem with Destroyer but there are others out there
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/Nasty-File-Remover.shtml
and

I've used RIP with no problems too.
Wish I could help more.

Yes Skuzzy the soundblasters/audigy had a problem with certain Amd chipsets.
Also the drivers were really intrusive at least some time back, installing desktop integration and all kinds of utter nonsense.
I had to use a couple other products from Creative through work and they were horrendous - namely cd-rom and a webcam, that's why I don't want to touch the whole label anymore.
-
Siaf, you are talking about the Creative utilities, not the drivers.
I agree, the utilities are the worst trash and way too intrusive. Only a masochist would opt to load them on thier computer. However, the drivers are not the utilities.
You have the the option of installing the utilities or drivers only these days.

HIJACK!
So umm Soundblaster Live! 7.1 24bit....CPU usage comparable to the audigy or is it just a 24bit Live! 5.1?
p.s. How's the CPU usage among the different audigy models, value to platinum?
-
direct x is an automated install , to use driver cleaner , uninstall the display driver , then boot to safe mode and clean the nvidia driver section in DC ... reboot and reinstall the driver . hope this helps

Kaz, the Platinum's just have the external drive bay with all the neat-o connections. It uses the same sound card.
The SBLive! is a pig when it comes to CPU time, and Creative's drivers do not expose any hardware buffers at all in DirectSound. Simply put, it is not much better (if at all) than some dumb AC97 device.
The Audigy line is much better. The Audigy 2 is slightly better than the original Audigy in CPU usage. The Audigy 2 ZS is the same as the Audigy 2, except it has a little less noise and better dynamic headroom.
The difference between the Live! and Audigy line is night and day. When I swapped out my old SBLive! for an Audigy 2, I picked up 10 to 15 FPS in almost every game as the CPU is able to do so much more than before. Your results may vary......
Do not take this as a recommendation. In fact, I usually will recommend AMD users not to use any Creative products at all due to the number of issues I keep hearing about them.
Funny thing though, there seems to be no coorelation with the issues, except the motherboard has an AMD CPU.
-
Thanks for the great explanation Skuzzy! Wow, interesting comparison to the AC97 :D
I won't be going AMD anytime soon (budget and such) so the audigy 2 is next on my upgrade list.
-
hey skuzzy , im running a audigy2 with a amd64 and nforce chipset without any issues what so ever FWIW

It's really a shame nvidia drops the built in sound support from nforce. It was excellent.
-
I have nforce4 MB with amd athlon64 and audigy 2. no problem.
Since i saw how much those front connector pads go for i wish i had bought the platinum with the front connector. outch.
