I was born and raised in Palm Beach County, Florida. Lived there for 35 years. Other than the fishing, you can have it. Too crowded, too bloody hot in the summer, crime rate through the ceiling, etc... etc...
Quit my job, packed up the wife and dog, and moved to Kentucky two and a half years ago. Now I live on 8 acres, grass runway in the front yard, deer and wild turkey running across the property, skies so dark I can see the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye, and oustanding roads for motorcycle riding.
Had our annual AH squad reunion here last year with about 20 guys present. Rather than the usual hotels, we had a camping extravaganza, and everyone stayed in tents in the back of the property. Shot some clay pigeons in the front yard, no one called the cops. When the beer took it's toll, we just staggered to our tents, no harm done.
Should have moved here 15 years ago, but didn't. Sometimes you just need to decide on something and do it. I'd have been a lot happier a lot sooner :-)

Hush. Hush. You'll hear someone calling your name. Hush. Hush. You want the whole country to come share your paradise with condos and big box malls asphalting over your turf?
-
Nah, they all think the people here have no teeth and are inbred... :-)
-
question is what do you do for a living that you can live there (obviously not a IT job, or in the financial market for example), and how's the internet connection?
-
grim... im stuck in fla for the time being and im dying to get the heck out of this place.
ill be here for 4 more years at least.. need to finish college (2 years to go for my major..but I have to spend 2 more years where im at working to save up to move to pensacola which is where the only FL state U that has my major *sigh*).
I have no clue where ill go when im done. I like mild-cold climates (60F i like) and dry air.
Whats the property costs over there? :) any website i can look at?
-
I lived in Louisville, KY for almost a year in the 80's. Have some good memories from the area, and some nice trips like Lexington, Cincinnati, Paris(lol)...

I'm just a lowly aircraft mechanic. I work on LearJets in Louisville. The internet connection pretty much sucks though. My days of speed surfing for porn are over...LOL

Hey there OIO,
Property costs here are of course substantially lower than Florida. A $350k house in Florida will cost you about $150k here just to give you a rough example. In the country you can find 4 Bedroom houses on 40 acres in the $200k range. The city areas like Louisville are substantially higher, but still A LOT cheaper than in Florida. I'll see if I can find you any websites on properties here and post em for ya... You want to live in the country or more of a suburb?
Just edited this post... Here's a link that might be helpful, you can search by type of property, dollar amount, etc...

I'm betting a huge fine for not carrying. :D

Kentucky is pretty country, but I'll take North Texas over it any day of the week. Milder winters, better economy, prettier women.

Northeast Alabama. Ain't no place prettier in the world. Draw a line from Birmingham north to the Tennessee River, and one east from Birmingham towards Atlanta. The other two sides of the "box" being the state boundries. Anyplace inside that box is God's Country.:aok

trade ya suntracker ;)

Was stationed at Ft. Campbell for 6 years, 90-96. I loved
Tennessee / Kentucky, especially Nashville. What a great town.

Well, they honor any other State's concealed carry permit. You can carry a gun in your glove box loaded without one. And the funny thing is that in the county I live in, you can walk into the store with one strapped to your hip... LOL

Not yet Mighty1, but I can tell you that crimes are hard to solve here because the DNA is all the same, and there are no dental records :D

I recall when I was moving out of Palm Beach County about a week before Hurricane Francis hit...
There were three Uhauls going in to Florida for every one going out...I felt bad for the poor bastages moving down there because I hated life. 95º every single day in the summer, 95% humidity. Even at night, 85 degrees and godawful humidity. I lived in a pretty good area too. Right on the water. I could think about going fishing, and less than a minute later BE fishing.
I just got back from 2 weeks in Las Vegas...there is plenty to do but it's an island in the desert. A Palm Beach with no humidity...no thanks. Columbus isn't bad I tell ya...easy to get around and still enough to do to prevent death due to boredom. If only there were good aviation jobs to be had here.

Maybe next year, i'll swing down there for a weekend. I'll bring a couple of cases of beer. I live in Michigan and would love to retire to Tennessee (Vols Fan) or Kentucky.

Hey there Karaya!
Even though you're a Vols fan, you're still welcome to stop by anytime and tip a few beers buddy... hehehe Kentucky's only a few hours away for ya... Come on out, well pop a few rounds off in the front yard, and down a few (not necessarily in that order).

Hey Grimco! Believe it or not, I spent Thanksgiving '79 in KY. (a beet1e-length story) Must have driven right by your town on the way (I-64) and arrived in Frankfort. I was with a friend, and we went into a restaurant for dinner, and I remember that every table had an old fashioned telephone on it, and you could pick up the earpiece and make a call to any other table in the place. Great for pick-ups! Do you know of this place? Is it still there?
I liked KY. I'd been on assignment in Springfield,IL and when I saw Frankfort I thought "Hmmm, brick buildings - reminds me of jollie olde..."
-
A few years ago I stayed in some cabins over in Slade, KY. There was a town drunk there that everyone called "mayor." He was actually nice and he worked for BEER. He would do anything as long as you paid him in beer. Believe he had no teeth either. I remember driving around and behind every house was an outhouse :rofl

Hey there Beetle!
I live about 15 miles from Frankfort. Never been to a restaurant with phones on the tables, but it sure sounds like something you'd see in good 'ole Kentucky... LOL
The people here are somewhat different, but in a good way. I was riding my motorcycle and ran out of gas about two miles from my house. I pulled off to the side of the road across from some house in the middle of nowhere to see if I could use their phone to call my wife. Before I could get my helmet off I heard some lady yelling from the porch "You need a ride?" She went in the house, got her husband, and he drove me home to get my gas can. In Florida, they would have ran inside their house and locked the door.

Hmmm... New Yorkers invading Florida is part of the reason I left the God forsaken place. I guess I'd vomit too if I had to choke down the Big Apple on a daily basis.

Kentucky starts getting warm in May, and cold in November.

Yeah, but it's only snowed here 4 times this winter, and it sure is purdy :D
