Ex-Marine Says Public Version of Saddam Capture Fiction
United Press International
A former U.S. Marine who participated in capturing ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein said the public version of his capture was fabricated.
Ex-Sgt. Nadim Abou Rabeh, of Lebanese descent, was quoted in the Saudi daily al-Medina Wednesday as saying Saddam was actually captured Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, and not the day after, as announced by the U.S. Army.
"I was among the 20-man unit, including eight of Arab descent, who searched for Saddam for three days in the area of Dour near Tikrit, and we found him in a modest home in a small village and not in a hole as announced," Abou Rabeh said.
"We captured him after fierce resistance during which a Marine of Sudanese origin was killed," he said.
He said Saddam himself fired at them with a gun from the window of a room on the second floor. Then they shouted at him in Arabic: "You have to surrender. ... There is no point in resisting."
"Later on, a military production team fabricated the film of Saddam's capture in a hole, which was in fact a deserted well," Abou Rabeh said.
Abou Rabeh was interviewed in Lebanon.

Interesting well design...

What makes you think that drawing is not part of the fabrication Holden?
Did you see the capture with your own eyes or did you perhaps see the publification the department of information wanted you to see?
Anything that comes from wartime media has to be taken with a grain of salt.

According to Abou Rabeh, it is a fabrication, and a well. I just question the design of the well. I've never seen a rectangular styrofoam well plug before. I've also never seen the need for a vent in a well. (you can see the galvanized pipe (identified in the schematics as a vent pipe) behind the Marine in the second photo.

Hey we all know a Saudi paper would never deviate from the truth about anything america does.
You know how you can tell its for real?
Look at the phrase the soldiers used
""You have to surrender. ... There is no point in resisting."
now you KNOW American soldiers said that. and it must be true.
Bahgdad Bob would never use termonology like that;)

Exactly, perfect response to this nonsense.
"There are no American troops at the Baghdad airport".

What are the odds that of a 20-man unit there would be eight of Arab descent including Abou Rabeh (Lebanese) and a Sudanese who was killed?

If it was a styro foam plug then why does it take 2 marines to pick it up?
-
And why is the plug outside on the ground?? The pictures clearly show the entrance of the well/spiderhole to be inside a dwelling.. Or, was the dwelling 'removed' prior to the capture of the century?

Hilarious.
It would be a lot easier to believe if this were reversed - that the story fed to the public was that there was a shootout in a bungalow and even Sadam himself was chucking lead out a 2nd floor window, but the carefully guarded secret is that he was quietly pulled from a pathetic little hole.
These people really need to learn to think before they start making sh*t up.

are those who so desperately want to believe it

Even this report is not the truth.
Secret sources reveal that Saddam was actually hiding in a Mosque near Tikrit. Traitors to Allah, the Magnificent, revealed his hiding place to the the pig-dog Amreekans. The Amreekans totally destroyed the 9,000 year old Mosque, the holiest shrine in all Islam which is used as an orphanage, hospital and home for the mentally deficient. All the other inhabitants of the Mosque, except Saddam, were brutally slain by the Amreekans.
An entire Marine division, including air and armor support was sent to take him into custody.
Saddam, using only a gold-plated Beretta he received as a gift from his son Uday, single-handedly held off the Marine division for two weeks. Saddam is credited as an Iraqi Air Force ace for shooting down 3 FA-18's, 2 F-16's, 3 Cobra helicopters and an AC-130. He also destroyed two Abrams with careful 9mm rounds into their most vulnerable points. Marine infantry suffered 2,234 casualties, with 1598 dead and the rest wounded.
Saddam himself lost both his legs below the knee and his right arm at the shoulder before being captured when he ran out of 9mm ammo. Clever Amreekan surgeons resuscitated him and reattached prosthetic devices. You'll note he is always wearing long pants and long sleeved shirts in recent pictures to hide the devices.
This is the TRUE story of Saddam's capture, so help me Allah.

toad exaggerates, it only a marine regiment, not a whole division.
