I'm thinking about making a new purchase. Something that can be carried once in while, and shot often. I'm looking a a P239, but not even close to deciding. Any suggestions?

What size - ammo - price range etc? I carry my duty weapon when I'm off duty which is a Glock G19. I love it - its easy to maintain and for the past three years I shot perfect scores when I had to qualify at the range. I used to carry a Keltec P11 with Belt clip. It actually fit in my pants pocket comfortably but since I started carrying my duty weapon all the time I gave it to my wife.

Probably standard or compact. I wouldn't want to go subcompact. Since it's a firearm I intend to shoot a lot, probably 9mm. .40 ammo is much more expensive. I don't really have a price range. In Massachusetts, you resign yourself to the fact that any firearm will cost you twice as much.

I really like the Kimber .45 I bought. I have a belt clip on it.
If you reload the .45 is the easiest to work with next to a 44 mag.
I also think that what worked in the past now works even better.... the revolver... the revolver in .357 to be specific. don't just buy one.. buy two.
Get a Smith or torus in a 4" barrel and you will have a plinking fun gun supreme. you can carry it fairly easy with "secret service" grips and despured.. If you need to carry a speedloader of the modern "injection" type or get the cylinder cut for full moon clips and load it faster than a semi auto... but... why would you need more than 6 shots?
then... buy a second .357.. the 340 pd smith.
A J frame made of titanim and scandium with shrouded hammer an 12 oz weight.. put it in your front pocket and no one will ever know you are carring a gun. You won't even notice it either.

hehe - Ted Kennedy working hard for ya? Because I'm a big fan of Glock I would recommend the G26 - Its their 9mm Baby Glock but I would not call it subcompact. The slide is a little over 6 inches in length and it’s a little over 4 inches in height. It’s easy to maintain, great for a lot of range shooting, great for a carry, but its not a competition weapon and it has to be comfortable for you. What I mean by comfortable is it has a short grip which you personally may not like. I would say that of the guys that carry weapons off duty on my job (including the major gun buffs), almost half of them carry G26s.

Nothing really wrong with a glock... you either love em or hate em.... I just can't form any kind of meaningful relationship with a plastic gun that is so ugly. They are excellent weapons and some say that "pretty is as pretty does" I would agree with that so far as women go but for me...
A large part of gun ownership is pride of ownership and feel. for me... and me only.. I get nothing from the glock. No solid feel... no history.... no appearance. Shallow I know but..
I have allways been a shallow and insensitive person.

I have a Taurus Millenium, its nice, fairly small and compact, the one thing I do not like is the lack of hammer and the double action firing.

I am with you on this one Laz, I know they are fine firearms, but Glocks just do not do anything for me. I would never buy one unless it was a GREAT deal then it would be to sell it and make money lol.
For looks and feel for me nothing beats a 1911, plus all the history is there.
I love sigs though.
My fav of them all Is my M1.

have an ruger 9m..i have hade for 8+ years....shhots liek crap compared to that 45.!!!! wow..again
anyways...I have a ruger 357. concelaed special..no hammer..and smooth corners..
I want to get a crimson trace for it..anyone use crimson yet?
btw..Im not a glock fan either.i didnt liek the weigth balance of it
soem of those 45.s out now shoot sooo dam nice

Speaking about Glock, have you guys seen the automatic versions? Those things are nasty.

I started out with a Glock 17 then changed to a 19. It shot just as comfortably and was easier to carry off duty. I still have it and it's my primary carry gun now. I also bought the wife a Glock 26 as it would fit in a purse much better. It doesn't get fired nearly as much as it's harder to hit with it. I did try the smaller glock 40 but it's still in storage in my vault right now. I feel more comfortable with the larger 19 anyhow. With the right ammunition I feel as well or better armed than even a Kimber .45.
I really like the .45's and have several. I just prefer to carry and shoot the 9's.

CZ 75 Compact. The CZ 75 is the best double-action 9 there is.

dune.. I have a eaa witness (cz75 copy) in .45 and a 22 conversion for it... I have tried to like this gun but.... I just don't... it is not solid feeling or accurate in my opinion... I shot real cz's thinking they would be better but I didn't like em either.
mav... people who live with the glock all seem to get fond of em. I just can't. I like the feel of my $125 makarov better. I am not picky tho and feel well armed with about anything from my 32 ppk on up to my 44 mags. All I want is safe and reliable with good accuracy at 3 feet for a defense gun.
I like to plink with em tho and such and for that... I like revolvers first and accurate 1911's second.. The Kimber is really a bargin at 1200 bucks everything considered... but so is the makarov and so are the revolvers I own.
green... I just shot a ruger in 45acp... what a horrible gun. It was hard to not say bad things to the owner. I just let him shoot the Kimber instead. How can Ruger make such great revolvers and such horrible (looks, feel finish, accuracy) clunkly semi autos?

that's kinda funny to me laz. i went out & shot a friend's glock .45, h&k usp .45, & ruger .45 on the same weekend. Most of it has to do with my lack of prettythang, but only the ruger was heavy enough to absorb most of the recoil for me, and the bigger size of it felt good. Didn't feel as good as the USP, but better than the glock. I shot my tightest groups with the ruger, slightly larger with the USP, and even bigger with the glock. I didn't pay close attention to the finish though, just how it felt & how many little holes I put in those dangerous looking pieces of paper.

Carried my Glock 22 for 5 out of 7 years on the police force. It shot straight, never jammed on me, fired even when dirty.
I hated the damned thing. Can't explain it, just never liked it. It just didn't "feel right" in my hand.

Personally, I regularly shoo tmy USP 45. I have yet to have any problem with it. The gun is 9 years old and I have owned it for 5. I have thrown almost 4000 rounds through it. I bought used from my Uncle.
I am looking at EITHER:
HK USP Compact .40
or the
Glock 23 (my buddy has the "C" model and I love it)

Let us know what you decide, martlet. I'm looking at getting a 239 as well. I've been carrying a P226 and think the thing is great, but I'll need something smaller when summer rolls around and winter coats won't cover it up.

Yup I do like the glocks. I hated them when I first saw them. They were the UGLIEST darn thing I had ever seen on a range. Then I made a terrible mistake. I shot one. Did a qualification with a borrowed one and got almost the same score as my regular weapon.
For off duty I was carrying an Officers model .45. Loved it but the Glock was SO much lighter and had over double the number of rounds.
I switched from duty carry with a S&W 66 to the Glock 17, later a 19. I kept the 19 for the last 10 years on the dept. and still have it. I also have the old first duty gun (bought it from the Dept.) and my first off duty a S&W 66 in 2.5". I have a hard time parting with the ones I used when I needed to depend on them.

yep... matter of taste and... how it feels in your hand and... what you expect a gun to perform like...
I think trigger feel is like that. I was used to the letoff of a good single action or double action revolver and hated the auto stuffers... till the Kimber. NO ONE complains about the feel of the Kimber trigger or my revolvers..
The Ruger 45 was quite simply one of the worst triggers it has been my misfortune to wrestle with.. glocks and most other double action semi autos are bad too for me but nothing like the horrible takeup and feel of the Ruger 45. Even my CZ clone was not that bad.
As far as recoil goes... I honestly never realized that people thought .45's recoiled much.
But....If the gun feels good to you and is reliable then that is the one you should have.
Unless it is a 22 I simply can't shoot any other semi auto as accurately or as pleasantly as the Kimber 45.
I am a glutton for punishment tho so someday I will revisit the 38 super (especially if Kimber makes one) or get interested in the 357 sig round in a 1911 style.

Was at the range today with my Gov't Model and 9mm CZ 75. Like Lasz said, it's all in how the gun works with you. CZ shot like a dream, although about 2 inches left at 20 feet. And Betty (my .45) shot like like she always does. Very, very well :)
And I agree, Glocks just don't do it for me. They shot well and are very reliable. But they look like hell and feel weird.
