Well after having my rear end handed to me, in pretty box with a ribbon on it, last night by Bullz and Goosech. I am wondering about the A20. They both took me out real fast. good job guys.
Bullz told me it is all he flies. Wow! anyway I was wondering, can they really be that manueverable. I want to be clear, I think that those guys are great and they get the most from thier planes. I just have a hard time believing anything that big is that slippery.
Now granted they made me fight thier fight but Bullz was able to reverse on me so fast I could have sworn he was flying a spit.
Goose was just fantastic with his gunnery.
I will of course read anything that soda wrote about them but any other sources would be great to read if you can point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance the cool thing about this game is when I get shot down it really makes me want to learn more about the planes that did it to me, not just for flying against them but becuase it really interests me.

Were you in your "Sporty" FM2, aub? And got killed by an A20? ;)

well yeah

The A20 is one of the big secrets in AH. Most ppl have no clue how good of a fighter the A20 can be. The biggest thing about the A20 is the fact it holds E pretty damn well for its size. I mean it is a twin engine attack plane. It is huge! As long as you keep it fast. Anything above 250-300MPH is all you need to out fly most fighters in AH.

I have flown the A-20 as my main ride on a tour or two. It is very capable within its narrow performance band. However, almost any fighter can beat it if, and that if is important, you do not overshoot. Plus, most A-20 pilots fly and often shoot from the F3 position. So, they have a better view and no blind spots.
A-20s accelerate in a dive faster than any fighter. So, they can generate speed in a hurry. However, that acceleration can get you in trouble if you go too fast. Level acceleration is, in a word, terrible. Climb rate is good for a medium bomber, but miserable for a fighter. Zoom climb is exceptional, due to its mass. So, be advised that a Co-E A-20 will match any fighter for a considerable distance going up. Don't try to climb away from a Co-E A-20, it may just catch up within the first 2-3k and shoot your butt off.
Most people lose to an A-20 because they did not expect it to maneuver like a fighter. Assume it will, be prepared for that and you'll beat them without too much difficulty.

Widewing

my favourite trick in A20 is to fly below bomber formations and use the top turret like 'schrage musik' from about 1k distance away. Too funny when people dont realise whats going on.
Works great to ping wingtips off and cause fire, gotta be pretty quick to get out the way if b17's/24's ball turret starts shooting at you though.

widewing if you know any a20 pilots that can shoot in f3 position u need to send me there # nearly impossible and have been doing sum resarch on it hate to tell all u guys that whine about a20 doing 450 and killing u and how u doubt it can do what it does in the game .. but it does lol its long wings created alot of lift yes when under 200 mph it gets sluggish ..but u can use that to your advantage alot of pilots wont catch u slowing down do nose down split s and they will usually overshoot then with long range 50calls u can hose em down ..and btw spits are the best fights 190's are no match besides speed the trick is the massave amount of horsepower it puts out..use the snap and sum rudder it will roll as fast as a 190 and sum speed 250 300 mph will turn with the spit's if not tighter so watch ur back MA wen u see the 2 3 or even 4 a20's @ 20 k dont doubt what they can do oo and btw .. Kiss_my_havoc :D ..lol cobia look at what u created:mad:

The thing I like the most about the A20 is the nose mounted guns - no convergence issues, concentrated impact, and plenty of rounds. If you get the lead right, you can hose a bandit down from 500 out in a turn no problem. IMO this plane does it's best work down low in multi plane engagements where a friendly can clear your 6 of any spits or N1Ks and anyone your tracking can't dive away. Also there is the factor that most enemies in a multi plane engagement will ignore your A20 and attempt to kill what they perceive to be the more dangerous planes....bad choice.
Has anyone had any success adding a gunner in their A20 and going furballing?

Where there any real life kills in the A20 ? .
I mean are there any storys about A20's hunting planes.
just curious

i have had a experiencs myself with a20 i was working my 9th kill a 109 had him turning and noticed a spittie coming to join the fight i ran out of ammo oon the 109 ..really wanting to RTB i stayed on 109 in hopes that he'd auger..sure enough he did lol ..so i point my nose twords home and expect spit to waste me well i was going slower than the spit expected he tried half of a split s to com back in behind me ..over shot again did half split 'S leaving his wings wide open for my gunery chopped his wing right off =) was an awesome fun fight i ended up landing my 10 kills:D..btw bug yes it was used for close support for troops and tanks after ridding of ords would try to sucker other nme planes down low to fight

lol widewing ... u will find out one day that killing our a20's isnot as easy as u think.. keep that train of thought ..will find out the hard way:aok

Whoever has the better pilot.

In that case, I'm doomed:D

The 110 would win. The nasty cannon package plus the extreme low end acceleration and the nasty amount of lift.

AGAIN EACH PLANE HAS ITS PROS AND CONS its up to the pilot never judge a book by its cover

I can judge all I want Bullz.
You stick the same skill level pilot in each plane and the A20 WILL GET DESTROYED (not counting lucky shots and the like).
Most people flying the 110 don't know how to fly it. It can almost keep up with a P38L.
-
Flying the A20 as a fighter is one of the more gamey aspects of the game. Fortunately, as pointed out, A20s are meat on the table if you know how to fight them so I like it when people try to take on a fighter I'm flying. Can't recall ever being killed by one in a dogfight though...
-
If you realy wish to see the a20 out turn anything in the sky, hit +1 flaps at 230 mph, turn one engine on wep, and turn the other engine to like 30% to 50% then start a little climb, full rudder..and do a J turn, very nice to see that big green beast do a 180 at 40 mph, then roar back to 250+ in a matter of 2-3 seconds with bolth engines now on wep.
and you all thought the '38 was evil.
Realy the 38 can do the same, but its rudder control is not as strong at lower speeds, such as the a20 is, the '38 will probably take a few seconds more to get the nose back down after the 180 turn.
and of course, fule % is master of all combat menuvers and flight.

I've flown the A20 as a fighter before (just for fun a while back) with another squaddie so I know how it can handle as a fighter. I still maintain that if you have problems killing one in a fighter you only have yourself to blame...

Ah... I was probably one of the first guys to use the A-20G as a fighter when they first were introduced. I also fly the IL-2 and SBD as fighters, and I manage to do well enough in them that the enemy had better not take these clunkers lightly.
Check my stats for tours 45, 46, and 47 and you'll see that I'm no stranger to the Havoc.
I know the A-20's strengths and its weaknesses as well as anyone.
Likewise, I give credit to anyone who can be successful flying it in the MA. Your score is excellent, by the way. I'm also glad to see more guys flying it as a fighter (mainly you and Cobia38).
I enjoy using light bombers as fighters because there is a challenge to surviving and prospering in them within the horde mentality of the MA.
Having said all of that, the A-20 is still quite vulnerable due to its slow rate of roll, weak wings, frail control surfaces and its inability to accelerate once it's caught on the deck. A reasonably good pilot can beat the A-20 no matter who flies it. Average pilots will lose more often than they win and most new guys are utterly unprepared for what the A-20 can do.
Anyway, continue enjoying yourself and be careful with any IL-2 you find at 10k.... ;)
My regards,
Widewing

Question.... I've heard a lot of people talking about lucky shots. I know the 1 ping pilot kill/engine kill bit.... but what's a lucky shot? Seems like If someone pulls the trigger and you get hit then it ain't luck? Or is it that they just spray and pray?
Woof
-
I'm glad you asked SkyWolf - any shot that hits me is a lucky shot, plain and simple:D

I'm talking about the luck inherent to any fight. A n00bie everyonce in a while does something really lucky and gets a shot. Even less often he'll take an even more lucky shot and kill you.
