Pretty sure Britain removed the red from their roundels so no one would mistake them for the Japanese meatball.

In the early war years 39-41 Australia (RAAF) had the same Roundels as the RAF.
One day an RAAF PBY was jumped by an American Wildcat whose pilot only saw the Red in the centre of the roundel, presumed it was japanese and tried to shoot it down.
The RAAF then deemed it prudent to remove all the red from the roundels.

Both the RAAF and RAF removed the red centers. the RAAF went with a larger blue with white circle.
The RAF in the SEAC went with a blue roundel with a lighter blue center circle.
So Kev's is an RAF SEAC Mossie :)
