Title: Advice on the best attack Aircraft
Post by: Big G on March 12, 2005, 05:52:56 PM
Hey guys
New to all this and I'm trying out a few aircraft. Anyone got any ideas as to the best Aircraft for carrying weapons to performance?
i.e., What plane carries the most for it's size ?
Thanks!
Big G

For me, the best balance between ordinance and performance is the P38L.  4 more rockets than a mustang, and climbs better while loaded.

i agree, P38L

a P47D40 isnt bad either.

American hardware offers the largest load. P-38L, P-47D-40, P-51D, F4U-1D and F6F-5 all haul 2k in bombs at the minimum, plus rockets. The greatest ordnance hauler in the P-47D-40, with two 1k bombs, a 500 pound bomb and rockets. P-38L comes next.

Tiffies can haul two 1k bombs OR rockets, not both. Mossies can haul four 500 pounders or two bombs and rockets. Bf 110G-2 can haul two 500 kilos, plus 4 much smaller bombs. What these three lack in under-wing load they make up for in cannons.

The A-20G can carry eight 500 pound bombs.

All of the above are highly effective and can certainly defend themselves ably.

My regards,

Widewing

Welcome to AH.  Even though I'm in a squad that only flies LW planes the P-47 is the plane I would choose if I where aloud to.  It carries a large payload plus she can take alot of damage.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm sort of siding with the 110-G2 so far, I love those 210mm rockets and that big 30mm cannon, Just tore up some ground targets with that thing, what a brute!

I'm very happy with the squad I'm in, they are a great bunch of guys.  I would not trade that just to be able to fly Spits, L-gays nor even a P-47.  But I got to admit the P-47 is a hell of a ride.

If you're attacking GVs, don't discount the IL-2.

6 200 pound bombs,

4 Rockets

300 23mm AP enemas.

Hell, I stoopped taking the bombs and rockets, and just go after them with the Cannons lol.

So, if you fly a Spit for one sortie, your kicked out, or do you just have to buy the beer for the night?

These numbers were calculated back in AH1 but they probably still apply:
(in lb of total ord including strafing potential)
Bf110G-2....8628
P-47D-30....8038 (which is now our D40 model)
P-47D-25....7036
P-38L.......6505
A-20G.......6457
F4U-1C......6348
F4U-1D......6056
MOSQUITO....5757
F6F-5.......5744
Fw190A-8....5666
P-51D.......5136
N1K2-J......4565
Fw190F-8....4427
Typhoon.....4257
IL-2........3956

As for the flight profile, I think Karnak did some analysis based on time-to-target given a climb and cruise and his analysis had them listed as:

P-38L
F4U-1C
Typhoon
Mosquito
Bf110G2
P47D40

Really depends on what you are looking for though, total ord, time to target, and if strafing is considered an "option" or if you need your guns for something else.

Hope that helps,

Big G...

Depends on the mission type...

For town busting...110 G is amazing with the "full" cannon package...it just melts buildings.  The snapshot on this plane is awesome if you catch NME planes in an overshoot or scissors.  Can usually get a FH or VH down in 2 passes also.  This is my first choice for Attack missions if their are friendlies that can save my arse from NME fighters.

For FH and VH killing, P47 or P38 is pretty nice.  You can drop the ord in 1 pass and still have some rockets left for gvs...but if too many gv's get out, then the .50 cals don't really help ya.   The P38 does have 1 Hizooka, though.

Maximum Hizookas:  The tiffy is pretty wicked all the way around...it can more than handle itself if there are NME fighters in the way.

My thoughts...

I thought the LW rockets didn't do you any good in ground attack missions?  They were air to air rockets with a flak warhead and timed fuse?  Or am I mistaken...

My top 4 votes would be the '38L, Chog,110G, and the D-40.

C-Hog, best all around attack plane in the game.

P-38, excellent if you need to climb to the enemy base.

110-G2, 6 gun package is incredable, excellent against the town and gv's.

P47-D40, great attack plane, only annoyance is MG's don't work very well on AAA.

Typhie is great for NOE attack missions. Slight less ammo and ord than previously mentioned planes.

IL-2 is a terror for vehicles.

Chog and P-38L.

IMO the Chog comes upperhand because of the quad-20mms.

Depends on the target i would imagine. In my LW sqaud, when we attack a base we usually are comprised of 110s and F8s.

While the choice of the 110 is no mystery, a little known fact and no longer a secret is the Fw190F8s capabilities. It can carry a little over 1500 lbs of ord, has 780 13mm MGs and 500 20mm cannons.
It is one tough bird. I have taken numerous FG hits without damage and recall getting a facewash from a flakpanzer only to lose my left cowl gun ( the flakpansie wasn't so lucky :) ).
The F8 then makes for a very good fighter/suppression AC. It's a bit clumsy when slow (its a tank for goodness sake) but kept up to speed, it can handle anything the enemy tries to throw at it in defense of the field.
All in all, the F8 is not an uber attacker like many of the Allied ACs, but makes for a great compliment to any attack mission.

Thunderbolt all the way here :)

Fast, tough, heavy and a big bombload :)

Drop the bombs, climb up and find yourself in a very fearsome fighter!

Though the other attackers are good too, just go for the one you like (They all undoubtly get your job done)

Agree 100%.  I flew the F8 for half a tour once just to get acquainted with how it handles so I could actually be halfway useful once the bombs were gone.  Although I have to say it is a bit more difficult getting the bombs centered on target than the american birds.  Plus its frustrating that it doesnt quite have enough ord. to take down a hanger on its own (which is BS IMO, the F8 had a much wider range of ord. than what we have to choose from, but we live with what we have).  Still not a bad choice for base suppression missions, esp. if you can hold your bombs in reserve to back up someone else.

In P-51's and P-47's, I usually load the 100lbs bombs, so I can still fight with them on (if I plan to use them later)
When it's getting hot I would drop them though :)
