lol holden. I had to edit a lot because of my damn spelling.

"Fusil d'Infanterie Mle. 1874. Tulle, 1879. In 1880, most rifles then in service were modified by the addition of an annular channel and longitudinal groove cut into the left side of the bolt way to act as a gas escape in the event of a ruptured primer or case head failure. These rifles then became the "Mle. 1874 Modifle 1880 ( Mle. 1874 M80)" and had the inscription "M80" stamped on the left side of the receiver . Very few weapons survived in the original configuration"

from http://www.gunsworld.com/french/gras/gras_pic3_us.html

just wondering what its worth. most websites say $200 to $400.

That's not entirely true.  Many quite useful for rasing the customary French colors.  If I remember correctly thier flag is the all white banner... right?

I'm not sure why and for what specific reason, but the norm is to hide the serial numbers.

You'll have to ask Lazs.
