Thats hillarious, really. We have several wealthy neighborhoods here in the Bay Area with a much higher standard of living than that. And yes, they are pretty much directly comporable.
-
So that survey went over your head? OK.
-
The results of many surveys like this are always skewed by the survey takers.
-
How can you do a quality of life survey that doesn't consider national defense? I hope I'm not in Luxemburg next time the germans go german.
-
They ranked Vancouver 3rd, which is a total laugh.... so....
-
Plus... this is just a summary of the survey. To see the results, you must provide $$$.
-
Well this part explains alot
"Cities are ranked against New York as the base city"
Also how do they define city?
what are the population differences?

I loved Vancouver, especially the street kids burning trash to stay warm in the rain....

Look at that bunch of ladies arguing over something they have not even seen.
I live here, and yes, it has some good sides ($$$) and some bad ones (bars close at 1AM).

The mere fact that you reside there kinda says it all, eh? :p
-
The survey included the level of crime as one important factor in the quality of living. It has nothing to do with wealth.
-
If what siaf says is true, then I'll agree. This place goes hand in hand with Japan, you can walk down the streets wearing only a miniskirt at 3 AM, and nothing will happen to you. There's a lot of pooolice, then ther are the 3 times more numerous private bank armies (read security companies) roaming the streets 24/7.
I'm not much for policed states, but I have to say, I've never been in a safer place ever, and I did move around a bit.
SOB, you need a J.O.B if you wanna beeeee with meeeeee!!! (Then I'll take HALF your sh*t!)
-
Saint didn't you read the link? It says on the first lines:
Luxembourg ranks as the world’s top city for personal safety and security, according to a quality of life survey by Mercer Human Resource Consulting. The city scores 122.5 followed by Helsinki, Bern, Geneva, and Zurich which take joint second place with scores of 120.
-
Naw, I immediately saw Grun's face: "Something better than my usa? IMPOSIBAL!!! Even for an exprrermunt!!111"
:lol
-
Quite interesting that Helsinki scores that high. The city isn't particularly safe IMO. I've had much more trouble right at downtown than in many other capitals. Also there are many areas where you will get your car or motorbike stolen or vandalized immediately if you don't have good alarms, but I guess that's not included in personal safety.
Seems like a flawed survey to me.

Thats a bit too much personal information there Saw.
-
interesting survey.
Somehow its nice to know at what level you live compared to other citys,
but does it change anything? guess not, live goes on so or so.
-
Yeah Pooh, I was kind of dissapointed when nothing happened ;)

Like there are no homeless people in San Francisco...what a paradise your living in

Fewer homeless people on streets of San Francisco
28% drop since fall of '02, but other counties report higher numbers
Kevin studmuffinan, Chronicle Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 15, 2005
San Francisco's homeless population plummeted by more than a quarter in the past two years, the city reported Monday, a dramatic change Mayor Gavin Newsom says is a credit to his policies of cutting cash assistance to street people and aggressively moving them into housing with counseling services
San Francisco's new figures are based on a , "one-night homeless count taken between 8 p.m. Jan. 26 and about 8 a.m. the next morning. It showed the city now has 6,248 homeless people living on the streets or in jails, shelters, rehabilitation centers or other emergency facilities -- a 28 percent decline compared to 8,640 in October 2002, the last time such a count was conducted.
"There are still a lot of homeless people out there, and I'm still seeing some of the same people I've seen for the past 10 years," Newsom said at a news conference to announce the numbers. "But it's time to start focusing on the good things that are happening."
The new figures were met with disbelief from homeless advocates who say they don't square with reality on the streets. And they come at a time when most other counties in the Bay Area expect to report an increase in their homeless populations, leading to speculation that perhaps some homeless people are being driven out of the city by its welfare-slashing Care Not Cash program.
"It's an outrageous undercount, politically motivated," said Jennifer Friedenbach of the San Francisco advocacy group the Coalition on Homelessness. "We've been looking at encampments and visit 15 different sites a week, and the numbers may have dropped a little, but we have not seen as dramatic a drop.

And then there's those of us that think living in any city pretty much puts your quality of life in the dumper.

Don't give up your day job as a singer Toad. That was beaautiful.

I'd hate to kick moose to the balls to get into my car at the morning.
Thanks; I'll stay at the city :)
-
ROFL Toad! What's wrong with cities? But I tend to agree, I wouldn't want to live in a large one. Luxembourg is OK though - I love that bridge/viaduct which overlooks the town. Luxembourg (the city) isn't that big, I don't think. It's one of the few places where the capital city has the same name as the country. The only other one I can think of is Mexico/Mexico City.
-
What's wrong with cities?
They're chock full of people who think they know what's best for everyone.
You have those in the country too.... they just can't get near you or affect you as much and the density/percent of them is far, far lower.
Cities are OK to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.
I'm looking for my country place right now. The city came out and swallowed up the little town I bought into 20 years ago. The nannes are swarming like termites.
Flee! Flee!
Oh giiiIIvvveeEE meeeEEEE a HooOOOooome....

And live with the smell of cow dung my whole life? *smug look* Thanks, I'll pass...
Beetle is right, it's illegal to get lost here! Takes 20 minutes to walk the town :)
