Europe doesn't need last calls. If you keep drinking you'll fall down long before midnight, in which case they roll you out of the door onto the street. It catches a lot of Americans out, because they're not used to European beer strength, and consider anything stronger than 2% to be brain damage.

;)

Storch - you mentioned Grimbergen. My favourite Euro bar is one called the Grimbergen, right outside the Cathedral in Antwerp. In true Euro style, if the ladies wish to use the powder room, they have to walk past the men watering the dadffodils. lol I was working for an American fiem 1996/97, and took one of my American friends there. He was like a kid in a candy store!! We were given "a map of the beer" - the young lady serving us didn't know the word "menu". I had to ask her - what are these numbers (eg 12.5) next to the beer? That was the alcohol strength column. Hehe, too strong for me. I like a Euro beer to be about 5% or maybe 6%; anything above that is not a session beer. Between strong beers we had a fruit beer (~3%) - blackcurrant beer, or strawberry/peach/lemon/cherry :aok

So if you get over here, storch, we'll go there, and then we can meet Saintaw, as Antwerp is in France as you know. ;)

When we say beer, do we mean that yellow urine coloured fizzy lager stuff in little glasses or riduculous oversize mugs? Or do we mean a proper pint of hoppy brown ale, bitter, or mild?

Abbot ale I could drink it by the pale ( though I'd suffer like hell the next morning! ):lol

Sir Rupert wonders what the real dykes will be drinking though, as while the art of advertising is about creating a fantasy for all to aspire to, most of the lesbians Sir Rupert has met, well actually he has a friend who’s friend is a lesbian – are hefty (Except those in car rental for some reason) and probably will be more suited to a tankard of Captains and Coke or Black Label (The beer not the whisky – Spelt the Scottish way for the reader, who quite correctly, pointed out that the whisky preferred by a former Chairman of the exchange is in fact Famous Grouse and therefore not spelt whiskey!)

Soon the ads will feature the guys who will look longingly at each other and sales of the popular Miller Lite in straight bars will go limp as two mates out for a drink after a tough day at work will shy away from ordering the brands lest they send mixed signals.

I don't think any American beer is above 5% in alcohol content.  If they are they must be called "malt liquor".  the "malt liquors" are very unrefined, in fact they are quite nasty.  but I could be mistaken as I often am.  ask the resident malt liquor expert Doctor Yo or one of his "homeys"  I understand that's what he has for breakfast he will have much better knowledge on this topic.

 just found this site http://www.taproom.com/beer/beerprf.htm

I usually drink Beck's, now I know why I like it better than other brands.

I was a bit disappointed when I got bottle of something with text "96 Proof" and... Well that didn't need any mixer.

As far as I know, "Proof" is simply % Alcohol x2. So 96 Proof would be 48% alcohol. And if you didn't need a mixer, it was either really good, or you're just that much of a man.

With regard to American Beer... meh. There are some regional breweries that I like quite a bit. Dominion here in Northern Virginia does some really good work (IMO of course), but I'm not really into the "Arms race" of Alcohol % either lol. AFter 5%, I'll just switch to Bourbon :p

LMAO I have a buddy that was married to a chick that not only could drink like a real man but fight like and beat the crap out of one too. Even the ones that fought back.

He and her used to get into these brawls. And by brawls I mean man style fist fight and it was always a toss up as to who was gonna come out on top.

One of the more amusing relationships I've ever seen.

The Heineken served in Holland is quite different - 5% alcohol.

But I prefer Oranjeboom!

Yeah, but again, you have to look to get that stuff, and it is only slightly better than Heineken. Fostly it's Keo and "Cyprus Rules" Carlsberg (not even as good as US-brewed carlsberg)

It's currently the Starkbierfest in Münich.  Damn, this is seriously strong beer!  I was at the Paulaner hall last week....

About Starkbierfest:

Starkbier is a "strong beer" which is consumed in Germany during Lent. You may think "stark" is refering to the alcohol content. Actually it's not. Instead it describes the concentration of disolved solids: the starch, sugars, proteins and minerals. The technical name for these solids is the "Wort".

This being Germany, the supreme land of rules and regulations, you'll probably not be surprised to learn there are laws governing which beers may qualify as Starkbier. There are two types of Starkbier: Bockbier and Dopplebock. Bockbier must be at least 16% wort whilst Doppelbock must be at least 18%. The famous "Salvator" Starkbier brewed by Paulaner weighs in at 18.3% wort. It's a Doppelbock. This means that for every liter of Starkbier, if you boil away the water and alcohol you have 183 grammes of solids remaining. Or, in layman's terms, one Mass contains roughly the same amount of "Stuff" as 16 loaves of bread. Hence: liquid food. For the monks, fluid doesn't break fasting rules.

Although the "Stark" in Starkbier is nothing to do with the alcohol content, the alcohol levels are indeed higher. A Bockbier is 7% whilst the Salvator Dopplebock is 7.5%. This is in comparison to the 5% for a normal beer.

Don't mention this to a Bavarian or they won't speak to you again, but Starkbier is not actually a Bavarian creation. The first Doppelbock was brewed in 1352 up in Hannover, North Germany (Einbeck Bock Beer). The monks at Munich's Paulaner monastery only caught on in 1773 when the famous Brother Barnabas invented with his Salvator receipe. This same brew has remained largely unchanged for the last two and a bit centuries. Originally the monks were forbidden to serve Salvator to anyone outside the monastery. This particular rule was quickly repealed in 1780 because the monks never obeyed it anyway.

Whilst the Palauner Salvator is the most famous of the Munich Starkbiers, the other breweries also have their own versions. Löwenbräu have a brew they call "Triumphator". The Augustiner have "Maximator". And the Airport brewery, can you guess? Yep... Aviator. Not kidding.

Nockherberg

The Starkbierfest is celebrated at many beer halls throughout Munich. The epicenter, however, is the Paulaner Keller at Nockherberg in Giesing. Here the festival lasts 16 days: from Friday 4th March til Sunday 20th March 2005. Their Festsaal has capacity for 3,500 pissed up punters and is decorated in the style of an Oktoberfest tent. A Mass of Starkbier costs €7.10. A Mass of any other drink costs exactly the same - even Spezi or table water! Entry is €1. After 5pm (3pm at weekends) entry is €7.80 Euro for which you also get a beer voucher.

The Starkbier is actually quite sweet so it's very easy to drink.  It then catches you out because you then realise that you're drunk after 2 or 3!  BTW it's served in a Maß which is 1 litre (nearly 2 pints).  I think the German's drink more beer than anyone else, which is a good trait IMO! :)

Heineken is Heineken no matter where it is. It`s not the alc content, it`s the indgredients and technique used for brewing.
Heineken is releasing, or has allready released Heineken Light here also. It will be horse wiz, light style.

Thank you Storch, I framed this, hehehe :)
If you ever make it down south (about 3 hours drive from Ghent) You'll find a lot of the beers you'd like are abbey beers in the south (Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Gaumaise, Cyney). They organise bus trips (So you don't have to drive) around those abbeys during summer (You can bring back some smelly cheese for the missus too). Let me know, and I'll gladly have a few glasses with you & talk sh*t :D

It's close enough! :)

Even a Maß of helles or dunkel bier in the Hofbräuhaus is pretty potent (5.3% & 5.5% respectively).  The fact that you're being served a 1 litre Maß surely helps too!  The problem is that you tend to drink it like a normal pint; i.e. you drink it at about the same speed!

I normally drink dunkel Weißbier or Guinness here in Münich (5.5% & 4.2%).

Have a look at http://www.bierclub.net/bierlisten/bierrangliste.htm which lists quite a few different beers and their strengths.

I must say that British bitters/ales are as good as any, if not better.  You can't beat a good strong ale!  (I'm not one for 'lager', I see it a namby pamby - lager drinking poofs! ;))

It's 6%. Different states have different regulations too. All that's required is that the product be labeled as malt liquor or malt beverage. The quality doesn't have to suffer. The problem is with the public perception of 'malt liquor'. Manufacturers believe that the stigma associated with malt liquor will keep any product labeled as such from being successfull.

Oh, mass produced American beer sucks prettythang.

There are many good small batch beers made here though. Ya just gotta find em.

The distributor I used to work for carried Mythos for awhile.

It is fairly nasty.
