Does the D-40 in AH have the paddleblade prop? If you read Robert Johnson's book "Thunderbolt", he says when he got the paddleblade on his P-47 it would outperform the Spit IX at low alt.
Anyone?

That should answer it for you.

According to Johnson, the P-47 could roll twice before the Spit IX could finish one roll, and he used this to his advantage to put distance between himself and the Spit. He then dropped the nose and zoomed up to where he was well above the Spit and came screaming down with an obvious advantage in gun solution. All of this took place at around 5,000 feet.
My mistake on what actually happened. It seems like pilot skill has a lot to do with his being able to get the advantage on the Spit.

You can own idiots in spits w/ a jugg at low alt in AH, too ;)

Anecdotes are good references for general comparisons, but they aren't exactly test reports. Besides, I'm curious - would having a paddle blade effect roll rate at all, if any?
ps) Spitfires have been greatly effected in their roll rate in AH2. In AH1 they indeed were rolling too fast. But in AH2, when the speed reaches near 400mph TAS, it takes almost 8 seconds for a Spit to complete a full 360 roll. IMO that's pretty acceptable.

I wanna hear gabreski's opinion on the spit:)

1. Johnson's Jug was extremely over boosted (see a post in the vehicles forum). It doesn't represent AH jugs (or most real jugs even though most of them were overboosted).
2. There's a lot of anacdots about super ace X flying plane Y beating John "cluless" doe flying a spit. Same goes for the story of the P38 pilot out turning the spit. The mere fact that they all try to boast out manuvering a spit is just a tribute to the spit's capabilities.

don't think there was such a plane as the P47 D40. There was a D25 and a D30; The D25 was Gabreski's favourite. This D40 seems to be a gaming variant.

From what I remember the D30 was a field mod of the D25 with the fin fillet and some other things. D40 was the production line version of the D30 with all the mods from the factory.
