Title: Ah Gt4 Challenge Week 1

CAR: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
MODS: $75k maximum budget. No R (racing) tires. No Nitrous.
AIDS: TCS and ASM disabled.

RULES:
- Gran Turismo mode practice only. No arcade mode or drafting AI cars.
- Use only those driving aids available on the real life car.
- Try not to cut corners too much.
- Lowest single lap time wins.
- Post times in this thread by Monday AM.
- Winner picks next week's track, car, and mods.
- Winner must carry 50kg ballast in next week's competition. Subsequent wins add 50kg ballast for each win, up to a maximum of 200kg. If winning streak is ended, 50kg is removed each week that the driver does not win.

I did the fastest lap with the default suspension settings.
I forgot to get the gear ratios, will post later. I just used the little auto slider thing to adjust the whole set so it is about 500 rpm short of redline at the end of the "straight"
It's a pretty good car, has some understeer turning in, but you can neutralize it with trail braking and throttle.
It could use a brake controller and stiffer rear bar but no money left for that. :)

Good choice GTO, it's a fun car. Not a complete pig, and not a UFO even when modded heavily. It even has a real life road racing pedigree.

How long did it take you to get used to it?

Oh and the real life road racing thing is why I love the car, I love the DZ302 motor, solid lifters rock.

With mods most of the old cars can be decent, not as good as new cars but close. I think the narrow tires hold them back.

I've been using FFB wheels since 98 or 99. I got used to them in about 5 minutes.

No need to build anything, just clamp it to a desk or one of those heavy folding tables from Office Depot.

The wheel mount looks kind of flimsy to me though, cantilevered out there on that pipe.

I'm hitting 1.40.xx's but still got the weekend to dial the suspension in. So far been dropping 4 seconds every time I lower the thing by a half inch.

And I gotta say, this is the only console game I've run into so far where the wheel has been easier than the game pad.

I am going to have to work on it much tonight, the GF is coming this weekend so I wont have much time then.

My mods are not like funky. I went full race on the suspension and less HP. I can not get the car to hook up though.

Is there also a way to have the total time for 10 laps? Something that we can do so we have to show consistancy, more than a "lucky lap".

Push "up" on the directional pad to toggle the ghost.

To get multiple laps, we probably could do a Family Cup. I think it shows the time at the end.

No way you can even come close to putting power to the ground effectively with a choice between 0% and 100% throttle application.

There's no substitute for a good power to weight ratio.

And if you're having problems with Leguna's sand... stay out of it :) The race lines are faster than any shortcut.

I'm fairly confident I can bring my lap times down to at least 1:30 in this car with a better tune. I shall see this afternoon!

I want the wheel. I'm trying to do the emotional blackmail thing to the wife showing her the blister I got on my thumb from last night... no workee so far ...

Obvious solution is TCS. That's why they made TCS and ASM standard IMHO.

Post by: SFRT - Frenchy on March 17, 2005, 02:53:48 PM: The differencial is mandatory, even with the wheel. If you leave it stock, you will smoke tires for the whole lap, even in 5th. Look at the replay, only 1 wheel is spining, pretty well done :cool:

When you play with the pad, you need to quickly tap the accelerator rather than just pressing it. It makes a big difference.

In real life braking is even bigger because of overheating. Most of the vintage races at Laguna Seca are decided by who has brakes left after 10 laps. Turn 11 runoff gets pretty busy. :)

Post by: FUNKED1 on March 18, 2005, 02:30:21 AM: Right now it says only real life driving aids. So a Camaro has TCS and ASM off, but an M3 can use them if the driver wants. If the no-wheel guys end up getting pounded regularly then I say we let them use aids too.

Post by: indy007 on March 18, 2005, 08:05:33 AM: 1:34.241. 440hp, similar to funked's, but no port & polish. got a tripple-plate clutch & carbon driveshaft instead. I'm also running a pretty odd gear ratio, shifting into 4th at around 103. 4th is short, pushing to 118, and getting to the top of 5th at the end of the straight. Most of the track is run in 2nd & 3rd :)

fyi, whoever picked this ride should be kneecapped. i miss my ufos :(

I think it's listed as "CLK Touring Car", different from "CLK Race Car". Mine is the DTM (German version of NASCAR) car not the super low Le Mans GT car.

I did 1:32.3 but it didn't count because I crossed the pit exit paint line.
I think there is a 1:31 in there if I play with the suspension. The car still has a push entering the corner, due I think to too much front brake bias.

Roof mounted hood scoop, long front end. iirc, 1st - 2nd shift point is 82mph, but the top end is only 186mph.. too low to compete with the bigger supercars on long tracks. If it's modeled anything like the one in PGR2 (xbox), it's pretty impressive.

Figure out a way to keep the nose from diving so much under hard braking? I haven't been able to so far with the semi-race suspension. Still putting down good times, but I know there's at least 4 more seconds I can take off.

That's the one that used to do those spiffy backflips at LeMans right? I guess they've flattened out that section of track since then.
