Title: The simple things
Post by: Jackal1 on March 18, 2005, 06:03:34 AM
Springtime , sunshine, a boat, a few buds, some minnows , a brush pile = Crappie and smiles.
A couple of frying pans, a few cool ones, some taters = Total bliss.  :D

In 22 years of eating fish and fishing I had never tried catfish, untill last year when I moved to AZ, for the move I drove from NY to AZ with my father. We stayed overnight in tulsa and ate at this hometown buffet. There was catfish prepared about 14 different ways and I tried all of them, it was amazing, I didnt know bottom feeding garbage eaters could taste so good.

Catfish is almost a staple where I come from.  You want to see amazing, you ought to see what some people can do with Carp.  I thought of them as "trash fish" like Gar, until my neighbor showed us how to cook 'em right.  I still prefer Catfish, but his Carp wasnt bad.

Actually as much as I enjoy Fresh water fishing I dont like the taste.

I've tried all sorts of fish prepaired all sorts of ways including in 5 star resturants.

they all just taste like mud to me

Oh Yea! That`s our mainstay all year long. Our lake is touted as one of the top catfish lakes. We  have Channels that are super easy to catch here, but the highlight is our big Blues. We mainly drift fish for the Blues and  it is a total blast because you never know when Ole Ironsides is gonna give ya a go.
We keep Blues and Channels in the freezer mostly year round.
Still there is something totaly awesome about that 1st plate of pan fyred Crappie every spring.

They don't eat garbage or carrion. They eat insects, crayfish, mollusks, crustaceans and other fish.

My best crappie to date was a 16" fish caught in a farm pond here in NE Ohio.

I'm not too big on fish. Don't know why, just don't have a particular taste for them.

I've had some fish prepared that tasted awesome. Then I've had the other kinds, which I almost gag on trying to force down.

I'm sure the stuff I gag on probably tastes good to folks that like fish, but for some reason I just can't get to like it and I try it anytime its offered. Everyone in my family (relatives, everyone) likes fish, spare my dad. Strange.

Jackfish are the equal of crappie in terms of flavor and texture, although they're a little bonier, and harder to catch.

Some folks also like grenel, but they have a tendency to break a man's tackle.

That`s a nice slab, especialy from a farm pond where they tend to overpopulate and stay small.
