Title: Help! New Video Card and wierd AH Stuff
Post by: SkyWolf on March 19, 2005, 03:24:10 PM
Greetings. OK.. today I got a BFG 6600 GT OC and installed it in my 1 GHz AMD 512MB POS.
I'm getting decent frame rates... but some goofy screens in 800 x 600 and really goofy screens in 1024 x 768. Can anyone help me with settings or Driver Advice? I DL'd the "latest" Drivers from BFG's sight. 71.84.
There may or may not be screenshots below cause quite frankly I don't have freakin' clue on how to do it.

Start off by uninstalling your vidio drivers, then run nvidia  driver cleaner (you can find it free on the web)then install the newest drivers.

Ya never install new drivers without removing old ones first.

In no real expert, but it seems like you may also have a problem with your POS (as you call it) computer being able to handle that monster of a video card.

One thing you may want to check is:
If you running in 1024 x 768 in game, do you have your desktop settings in 1024 x 768?  make sure the desktop size matches whatever size you request in the game.
Try lowering the in-game textures to 256..if that works, then bump em up to where you can get away with it.
Not sure what you mean by weird graphics.. may also want to increase your Hz on the monitor (assuming you have it on the default 60 Hz)  but ONLY do this if your monitor AND video card allow the configuration.  Can damage things if you don't know what to do, or what not to do.
Not sure by reading your post, but it seems you might be saying that game runs fine in 600 x 480 mode?

But again, I really do believe that your biggest problem is that your old system cannot keep up with the speed of that new card you got.

Speed of the card is irrellevant.  You are looking at it backwards.  A super fast video card isnt going to push the system beyond its limits, it will simply remove ANY load a slower card might have put on the system memory and CPU.

Your thought is like putting a car in 1st gear and trying to drive at highway speeds.  Might be possible but its going to put a big strain on the drivetrain.  In actuality, its just the opposite effect.  Imagine that same car, but in overdrive.  There is still a limit to the speed of the car.  And its still determined by the transmission (what gear its in), but the engine doesnt have to work hard to travel at highway speed.
