Title: More on the M1A2 TC

I received more information about the tank commander's position..... We have worked on a solution to the issue of the tank commander being exposed when he fires the .50 cal.  It is part of Tank Urban Survivability Kit (TUSK).  

 

Description: A remotely fired weapon station for the Commander of the M1A2 SEP Abrams Tank.  

Consists of mount for existing .50 cal MG, day and night sights, for 360 degree operations.
*Cost: $150,000 per vehicle

*Previous Fielding: Fielded to support combat operations (Various platforms; RWS is on STRYKER

Read about it Friday. Also the new package will add reactive armor plates to the side skirts, along with other smaller upgrades to the M1A2.  Too late for me though, terminal leave starts 1 Sep.

Finally some additinal protection on the sideskirts! The abrams seemed to be the only western MBT with bare skirts. But wont reactive armor be dangerous to the supporting infantry? Can light arms fire set it off?

One thing I'm curious about is them adding an infantry phone in the back, how will this work out with the turbine exhaust?

Dang good question Mav. After 25 years, you'd think I would have some sort of detailed plan. Just haven't decided what I'll do, but I like the Carolinas so I do know I'll be staying here.

Light arms can't set it off. Otherwise the afgan guerrilla fighters wouldn't have had to do much more than shoot at the tank with rifles while one guy is about to shoot with an RPG.

Finrod,

There IS life after retirement. It would be a good time now to start doing some hard thinking about what you'd like to do. Don't be in a hurry to actually start it. Take a month or so to get things in order and have a nice vacation. Then start on what you want to do from then on.

Going into it with no ideas or ambitions tends to make it pretty damn boring.

I've been offered a few GS positions here on post. I'll probably take one. I am looking forward to retirement, and I definetely plan on taking about 2 months off before I wade back into something.
