Post by: medicboy on March 23, 2005, 08:14:15 PM
Well I am on spring break, it is 20* blowing snow and I just spent 48 hrs in the hospital, getting pain meds.   I had back to back kidney stones, one on the right and one on the left.  they over laped for the middle 24 hrs....  I was sure I was going to die...  My God that hurts!!!  Don't ever want to go through that again...

Getting better, was acutaly able to eat today with out throwing it all back up...

Any one else here ever have kidney stones?

Just be glad you didn't watch Deadwood on Sunday night. I still hurt from watching the 1870's treatment for a stone.

Yes Medicboy I have had 10 this year alone.
Last month I had 2 lythotripsys done.
Mine are calcium stones and they range in size 10mm -15mm.

Get a workup done fast as you can.
They found that my body makes to much calcium and uric acid.
So I am on meds now I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I can tell you insurance is a gods send one of my hospital stays
was 17k!!! the other 10k.

Oh and demurral did nothing for my pain so when I was admitted
for overnight pending my lytho i got morphine 10mg every two hours.
LOL I love morphine.

In the mean time just drink a lot of water.

Yep, been there, done that. Got a friend who gets them so often it doesn't even bother him much. He's probably got a small quarry in his septic tank. Truly is agony in one of its higher forms. Never had them bad enough to need lithotripsy or anything. Like a hot knife in the mid to lower back, followed by the distinct impression you're pissing a strand of barbed wire.

We went on a trip to a trade show a couple years ago, and my friend said "Hey, you gotta drive, I got another rock". So I took over driving, and he took a pain pill and proceeded to drink about 10 12oz. beers. We pulled over to take a leak and you could actually here the stone hit the urinal. He just laughed and said "got ya, ya little bastard". He slept two hours and was fine. I just ain't that tough when I get one. Takes me at least 8 hours to pass it, and I'm sick and trying to sleep the whole time.

Well this all started Mon. night, and i am still in pain, can't keep any food down.  I am wondering if maybe this is really my appendix, I can't imagine it taking 4 days to pass this last stone...  This sucks.  Might go back to the horsepital if this continues over night again....

The only one I ever had took 4 days.

Sucked, was in the hospital the whole time, they doped me up on something that wouldlast 7 hours or so but they would only give it to me every 8, so for the hour I was throwing up in pain.

I feel for you man, really the worst thing I ever lived through.

Not all stones pass in any set period of time. Also, some don't pass because of their size, hence the need for lithotripsy to break them up. I've seen it take several days. However, they don't let it go that long very often anymore. Go back to the hospital, or better yet, find a GOOD urologist.

Thanks guys, well a few hours after my last post the pain changed to a sharp pain in my groin, I went to the bathroom and pissed out 2 stones in one shot and a whole bunch of blood.  Feel much better now, almost back to normal.  I am going to watch my calcium intake and see what happens.  Might go see a urologist too....  Each stone was just under 5mm, 5mm being the max size that most normal people can pass with out litho...

Was just like pissing barb wire, very good description...

Glad to hear you're fine now. Thought you'd like the description. Strange how the pain moves like that ain't it?

Passed many of them over the years.  About 7 years ago one of them cut the inside of my right kidney.  Due to bleeding disorder, kidney swelled up with blood until it burst open.  Lost that kidney.  Have now had one stone stuck in my left kideny for the last 2.5 years.  Docs have gone up several times to try and pull it out with a scope - no luck.  Will not attempt surgery or breaking it up due to possbility of bleeding.  It (or scar tissue/adhesions) has been pressing on a nerve for the last 2 yrs or so.
Been on medical leave for the last 1.5 yrs - and surviving on 3 narcotics;  Vicodin, Percosett and Fentanyl patches.
Gives me a lot of time to play AH (when I can stay awake) and gives a new meaning to aces "HIGH" when I am playing...

I was on Perc when my back seized up last Aug. That is really strong stuff. I am suprised you can play AH while on it. I could do little but watch TV and fall asleep.

Just remember that with each stone that passes there will be scare tissue in you ureter so in other words according to my doc any way that once you start having stones you are gonna keep having them.

Sorry to be a bummer but you are stuck with them until you find the cause of em.
So go get your urologist to give you a workup.

That's my problem - if I'm flying somewhere and there's no immediate action, I doze on and off.   I also find myself doing a lot of stupid things like " that planes coming up on my 6 - I'd better break......i really should break....BOOOM!!!!"  About the time i wind up back in the tower, I yank the stick over to break left.  All these drugs really slow down your reaction time - but the good thing is when you get shot down, you don't really care about it either.
