Title: rage.
Post by: JB88 on March 24, 2005, 12:40:41 PM
this morning i went to check my mail only to find that i could not connect to my site server for that account.  called my hosting provider and was told that the server that has hosted my sites had crashed and that everything was "gone".  this includes all of my backup file storage, email, and various things that i have collected and placed there over the years.

most (but not all) of these things i have backed up on another computer...but the thing that chaps my arse is that they are supposed to have been doing daily backups of thier own servers...so in a sense...they lost two copies of everything that i had ever stored with them...if they ever actually DID back up thier servers.

after expressing my displeasure i was told that they would (reluctantly) offer me a free month of hosting.

um.  no.  screw you.

the "owners" were supposed to call me back and havent.

they automatically renewed my account without my permission using a card that they were not authorized to use more than once.  (i was planning on switching because they suck)  there was nothing in the agreement which allowed for them to do this...thier customer support is awful...but i kept it with them anyway.

EHOSTSOURCE is the company.  never ever use them.

they are flushed.

end rant.  thanks for listening.

p.s. -  have several sites that i host, anyone have any suggestions for hosting?  i was considering either lunarpages or bluehost...dont mind paying if it is better than that.

I'm using hostsave.com, and it seems fine.  I'm paying like $8 a month for 100 gigs of transfer, hard to beat.  When my site was posted to slashdot, there was no slowdown.

The only beef I have, and it's not a small one, is that the version of PHP they have installed is kinda old.  It's a 4.X release (don't remember which), but it's JUST barely old enough that I can't install the Mamba CMS.  There are people leaving the service because of the PHP version, but they promise to upgrade within a  month or two.

If your content is static or doesn't have wacky dependancies, it's worth checking out.  Let 'em know that hallert.net referred you.

I feel your pain.

I've got a dedicated box through ipowerweb.com

5 days later I had to call, sit on hold for 20 minutes, and talk to 4 different departments before getting my confirmation email telling me my server was up. Was a bad omen to begin with...

Then I find out the majority of the programs are the wrong version, and not what they advertise. Then I get told to upgrade it myself. Wiped out the mysql db upgrading from 3.23.x to 4.0.x, then find out the joke is on me, Plesk7 uses mysql to store.. well... everything... and it disables the mysql root login, but only tells you that if you look in the very end of the manual... I never got the manual. So now my control panel is toast and there's no rpm's on the server to do my own recovery (which is why I haven't put up the gt4week subdomain on it yet).

Summary:

* Got billed immediately
* Get no communication from the company, at all, until I called them complaining.
* Long hold times
* Didn't get what was advertised.
* Told to upgrade it myself to get what is advertised.
* 6 days later I'm still waiting on an admin to get around to doing a restore for me, because they won't just give me the Plesk rpm's to do it myself, and I can't see my license key to get help from SW Soft (who distribs Plesk).

I'm not a happy customer.

good to know, they were also on the shortlist.  think im gonna go through blueweb.com  75 gigs transfer 2 gigs storage 9.95, free domain (which i was going to have to get another one anyway)
and up to six hosted sites... so we'll see how it goes.  thier support folks seemed pretty dry but nice enough.

Well, when it works, it works good. The box is fast,  the backbone is fast, & I get a 1 TB/month transfer. The customer service though is pretty horrible.
