Title: PC Freezing Up
Post by: Hammy on March 24, 2005, 01:42:49 PM
after i connect, about 5 minutes later, my PC freezes up and i have to reset it and reboot. This is driving me nuts.

I have had an error message on a cuple of occasions from microsoft saying aces high has encountered an error and needs to close and have submitted the details to microsoft, but generally i just get a freeze up and need to hard boot.

Any ideas skuzzy????????????

I have done a dxdiag and forwarded it to you skuzzmeister!!

I am having same prob. and getting same aceshigh.exe has encountered a prob. and needs to close message. although it usually takes at least 1/2 hour to happen.  The screen freezes and if lucky, I can get task manager up to close out aceshigh but most of time I have to hold power button in.

Two other people I talked to are experiencing same thing.

Do the same thing Hammy did and send Skuzzy a copy of your Direct X Diagnostic report.  Too many things can cause that problem to diagnose with such a general statement.  Everybody's computer is different.

I did that--have not heard back from Skuzzy.

If you sent it Friday evening or during the weekend, then I will not get to it until Monday.

I answer all my email everyday (Monday through Friday), so if you sent it on Thursday, for example, and did not get a reply from me on Friday, then resend the email.

I get the samething, but the funny thing is, it only does it in XP home, not 98SE, so I use 98SE to play AH.  It's gotta have something to do with XP.

If you have a 5xxx series card, use 61.77 driver.  If you have a 6xxx card, you can use the newer drivers.

Try turning your Vsync on.  Also check what your monitor refresh rate is set to.  I'm betting your refresh rate is set at default 60hz and your Vsync is off.

Right click on your desktop, and select Properties.  Go to the Settings tab and click the Advanced button at lower right.

The top right tab of your new choices should be your video card setup.  Click on it and find the section that contains vsync.  I dont know exactly what your setup is,  you'll just have to go down the list until you find it.

If you have frame rates at 120 I can guarantee its off.  The problem is what you actually see on your screen (frames per second) is limited by your monitor's refresh rate.  In your case, its 85.  So you physically will never see more than 85 fps no matter what your video card says it is putting out.  Vsync attepmts to put your video card's output "in sync" with the monitor's refresh rate, and shows you realistic frame rates.  Without this enabled, the video card can get way ahead of a slower system and cause freezes and stutters on your screen.

I'm not saying this is your only problem, but once you have realistic frame rates and you dont have to worry about stutters or freezes caused by this, other problems can begin to be ruled out.

yoellavi

yes you need vsync on .. or it will mess everything up ...

black screen of death could also be a weak power supply or overheating hardware .

I'm having the same problem with the 71.84 drivers.

I backdated my drivers to 61 but now Rome: Total War doesn't work and FS2004 has problems.  Unfortunatly, I don't have any drivers between 61 and 71 so I can't play AH and Rome: Total War without having to reinstall the drivers every time I change programs.

Anyone know where I can get older nVidia drivers till HTC finds the bug?  I could only find the latest one on nVidia's site.

Did you try the archives section at the Nvidia website?  66.93 I think is the one you want (assuming you have a newer 6xxx video card).

Couldn't find a link to the archive section but a quick search managed to scare up the right page.   I'll see if that fixes the problem when I get home.

Thanks for the tip.

ATI came out with new driver - CATALYST 5.4,
I've installed it , seems to be  ok now, no black or freezing screen.
in the control panel  in "monitor propperties" -> "adjustments" ->
"synchronization" -> i can turn the vertical on (which i did)
and also the horizontal (i left it  default - off).
should i turn horizontal on as well?
thx for hlp

With the MX4xxxx card you need to be using the NVidia 61.77 drivers.  Use DXDIAG to determine which driver you have loaded.  The last 4 numbers shown in the driver version in DXDIAG is NVidia's version number.

Bug, what issue are you having and what video card?

I take it is is an ATI card.  For X8xx video cards, the newest driver seems ok, but for older ATI cards try the 4.12 Catalysts.

My system totaly reboots i have a ATI 9800 pro card.

It seems Il2 makes it freezing also there i have to reset it myself.

I got error messages talking about problems with the device drivers.

Thats why i downloaded the newest catalist drivers.

But i won't help both in Il2 and AH.

All system checks don't show a problem and it looks fine untill just these sudden reboots thats all.

Argh i cannot fly .

Im very afraid something is wrong with my graphics card. still it keeps guessing.

Pc is worthless now

 :o

looked at my ventilation holes all where dust up closed.

i could play a whole sorty in il2 so AH would work also.

Im gonna take a look inside my puter to cleanup some more.

That would do it  finaly i guess.

Yep its a heat problem i had that with my old puter to but than it was the cpu ventilation. But i could also hear the bearing of the fan.

But since they sound smooth running its probably only dust.

Good thing i loaded new drivers and cleanedup tunedup my puter a bit.

For the perks ill just fly few PG missions more :)

Thank for attention anyway
As always   Skuzzy
