Post by: Big G on March 24, 2005, 07:02:38 PM
I must have put around 300 rounds in or near a MKIX today and nothing! What an aircraft, got 3 bobmbers today after trying for ages, Using the 190-A5 for now, I like the amount of rounds you get and the 20mm cannon.
Cheers

Probably missed about 95% of those 300 rounds Big G.

 Happens all the time.

Just as an afterthought guys, Should I be in the A5 or is there a "Beginner friendly" type that newbies such as I should be cutting their teeth in?

MK V or IX?
Trying out the V right now, Cockpit has different  airspeed indicator I notice as compared to the A5, goes up 14-18-20 etc

Gotta agree with Shane on that one.

Spits a good newbie ride.
Next up would be the La7 followed by the NIK,I KI-84, 109G-10 and FM2.

FM2 while not very fast is a very forgiving aircraft just be sure toset all your guns at the same convergence

A5 is a good beginner plane if your looking to get into the FW190s. Though not as fast as the others it turns better and has a nice gun package

the 9 is a wee bit faster up higher, but the 5 turns a bit better.  the 9 also has option for 2*.50's to go along with the 20mm's...

9's can also carry ord and drop tanks.

I'd go with the 9 until you get the hang of things and if you like to be a pure twisty turner, move onto the 5 later.

however, if you're an energy fighter at heart, try the p-51d nad later move onto one of the more pure e-fighters.

if you're a boom and zoomer, timid, back stabbing kill thief.. go directly the fw190d9.

if you'd like to forever remain clueless and always run until you have an overwhelming advantage, try an la7.  :D

Fly the mannly planes, don't mess with the dweeb rides. May take a bit longer but you'll be a better pilot in the long run for it. :D or atleast you'll look cooler when you die.

I am usually even too distracted by that avatar to actually reply something... There! I did it!

What is it that us, grown up males in more or less responsible jobs, gets us so distracted by a few moving pixels

The person who made it is a genius by the way.

Use a spit9 until you get a handle on the very bottom basics of how to fly, then mix n match at will.

You'll always go back to the Spit 9 now and then, though. Awesome plane. :)

IMO, I think the P40B is the worst plane in the game.  It seems to go into accelerated stalls easily.  Was there really that much difference between the B and E models?  The P40E, IMO, is really a pretty good plane other than limited speed and ammo.

For a new player the spit9, spit5, n1k2, and of course the La7 are all good rides.   I think that 190-A5 is a great plane.  The plane is just a part of the game.

Learning how to judge where to be (and not to be) or overall situational awareness (SA) is more critical than the ride.  However, in one of the above planes, having good SA is not as important.  Flying a plane like the F4U-1 or a P38G requires more SA to keep from getting killed.

I highly recommend take those rides up in the training arena and see how they fly in the low and high speed ranges.

Regards,

Malta

p.s. yes, spits can take alot of 50 cal ammunition on occasion, judging by sprites, especially in the fuselage.

The best plane to learn on is still the F6F. Good handling, great rudder authority and good views. You can T&B/E/angles fight it and handle just about anything in the arena. Once you get comfortable you can move on up to the -1 hog:)

fly the Hurricanes.  it turns great & has a massive kick with those cannons.  just don't spray and pray or you'll be out of ammo in no time.

I'm going to run with the spit 9 for now, Already I have found out some important things about it, keep the speed up and get in to  a turn asap and I have some breathing space, no point mixing it up on the deck for a while as energy vanishes and I'm wallowing around at 200mph (if that) with some guy coming round on me and so no chance to get up high again and get some speed.

Mind you, I could have described any aircraft there really ! If anyone can post on here some spit 9 tactics I could then take these to the training area and get them right.
So far it's "swoop down, turn and get out of dodge" tactics that have saved me so far, picking my fights and not to go just diving in on anyone.
Still great game though and a lot to learn.

A good choice to begin with. I suppose you might want to think about the spit 9's cruise speed. I believe it is around 285-290 mph. If you plan to fly at cruise your options open up. You can momentarily dip the nose and speed up, or raise it and slow as the situation dictates. You can also find the best corner speed for any plane using a simple formula. For example, if you like to fight and flight around 5-8k alt then go up to the higher of the two and go level with flaps up, cut the throttle until, in level flight, it stalls off. Note that speed and multiply it by 1.66 and you have its best cornering speed. Simple and works on all planes. I've already checked the 9 and its 152-153 mph. :)

The spit 9 does everything ok. Has resonable guns (20's and .50's), turns ok, can get reasonably fast and is forgiving when you get it all turned inside out. It has great legs (range) compared to some of other rides. Suggestion is to take the Drop Tanks (DT's) and 1/2 tank of gas. Just before you get into a fight just drop them and you will be at a nice fighting weight (1/2 tank). Fight until you get to 1/4 tank then turn for home. You will notice about the time you turn for home the guns are just about empty. It can't outrun alot of planes and many planes can turn with it enough to get a kill or bug out to re-engage.

So far it's "swoop down, turn and get out of dodge" tactics that have saved me so far, picking my fights and not to go just diving in on anyone.

As far as tactics go, first you gotta learn tactics. Then you can apply them to a particular plane. As you noted above, you swoop down, turn and get out of dodge. The good news is you have begun learning to stay alive. Now you can work on learning tactics and chaulking up kills.
As good place to begin is in the TA.

Still great game though and a lot to learn.

When someone acquires a gun solution on you, start moving your stick in a clockwise direction over and over and over again, but every now and then, be sure to slam your stick diagonally.  Then, continue stirring in the clockwise direction again.

Do this, and you'll fit in with the Spit crowd just fine.  :aok

Welcome to AH, btw.    It's the greatest online combat flight sim.
