I walk into an arcade nowaday and none of the games look any fun. The graphics are so way ahead of what we had growing up but they are so lame in gameplay. I miss the magic of Armor Attack or B-17 Bomber. Remember that football game with the metal wheels you rotated as fast as possible? Galaga, Galaxian, Warlords...great games all. But god did I hate Donkey Kong and Dig-Dug, never understood why they were so popular. Oh yeah Time Pilot was awesome.
-
Defender and Stargate, Moon Patrol, Robotron and Marble Madness.
-
I loved the Star Wars X-Wing game that had white lines for graphics. Used to spend hours playing that thing.

I recieved one of those as a 15th Bday gift. fun game, even bought the Empire Strikes Back boards for it. Seems arcade games are no fun anymore unless you know how to dance.
-
Star Castle and Joust were cool as well.
-
Spy Hunter and the X wing game rocked.
-
Agreed walked throuhg an arcade just for chuckles a few weeks ago and came to the same conclusion.
Give me Star wars, Lunar lander, Asteroids or even any of the old Commodore 64 games like "Summer Games"(or any of the games series)," BC Quest for tires and "Grogs Revenge" over any of this overdone stuff out now. The graphics may be better now but they all seem to be missing "it"
Even the pinball machines dont look as much fun as they used to be.
I miss my "Pinball wizard" and "Harlem Globetrotters"
Pinball machines
-
We were obsessed about one called "Speed."
A driving game, top-down view, 4 steering wheels sticking out of it... crappy graphics.... but intense once ya started to get good at it.
-
Two Words.
Missile Command
-
Nash
Was that the one you would spin the wheel to go around corners? Like spin it like a top?
-
Yup. Spin the thing, car goes sideways, squeak through the hairpin, drive over the turbo symbol, punch it.
-
Elevator Action and Dragon's Lair.

I'm a youngster I wasn't around for the arcade glory days, in a sense. However, I feel that older games were awesome and you can find a lot of them such a lunar lander and that tank game online. You just don't quite get that nostalgic feel without the controls. My friends dad (the lucky bastage) bought an arcade set up and it has over 150 games in the computers memory (yes its hooked up to a computer:p . I love Addam's Family pinball though, that one rocked. My friend mentioned above has the Creature from the Black Lagoon pinball machine.
-
Hell, we had Pong when it first came out as a TV console game. I bet my parents paid 100 bucks for it in 1972, which is about the same as buying a nice laptop today. I remember it had 12 different versions of pong, with different goal sizes, number of balls, etc. I never did like it, or space invaders, or Pacman.

I liked the Hard Drivin games, just for the variety of the stuff you can do while simulated driving. Always went backwards and crashed into stuff to see what happened.
-
I freaking LOVED this game. The "blacklight" color of the map was mesmorising to me. Wanted to jam Black Sabbath and Led Zep when I played this.

Bah Coin op is dead ONline Gaming killed it and consoles :D
-
I want to buy a coinop game for my new pizza place, any suggestions? I was thinking Super Mario Brothers, or maybe Pac-man.
-
Super Mario Brothers. Definately.
It'll appeal to a younger generation easier.
-
Diablo the last few there, look like Tailgunner, Combat2 or something, and I loved that sword fighting game. My favorites were Battlezone, Eagle, Defender,Zaxxon, Gorf, and one they had at the ocean when Id go on family vacation, that had a 50cal. and a big screen and it would show movies of planes and you could shoot at them.
-
10 Yard Fight, 1942, Starwars, Elevator Action, Galaga, Gauntlet, Ikari Warriors were my favs...
Better I have those games on the puter...MAME32 is a wonder thing! (you even have to put credits in)
Its amazing that these games like Frogger was only about 64kb, Galaga 88kb...asteroids 27kb..

Asteroids and Wizard of Wor were my favourites. Wizard of Wor never ceased to amaze me with its first speech synthesis.
-
There was a helicopter game with movielike graphics. You had to fly thru New York turning between buildings with power, rudder and collective with a copilot telling you turns. It was a biatch. I could have bought a car with the money I pumped into that game, but I can't remember the name.
-
I forgot to add Mr.Do's Castle.
-
Another good one was Hard Drivin . I think that was the name. Big red seated game, some of the first 3d graphics I had seen in a video game.
-
Anyone remember this one?

No gaming experience will ever match the intensity of competing in Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat in arcades. There's just something satisfying about being undefeated for hours on end as people keep putting up their quarters trying to defeat you, but you find yourself able to counter any style. Then they look at you, and you know they ask themselves, "how is this 12 year old punk beating the **** out of me?"
Oh, nostalgia.
-
Umm.. was this experienced with substances or without? :D
-
I was in Dave & Buster's last week and I agree. While they do have the Galaxian/Ms PacMan combo unit, most of the other games where all plastic gun shooters or fighting games. And all they had for pinball was South Park (Williams 2000 pinball doesn't count).
Anyone else have coin-op machines at home? I have:
Ms PacMan
Donkey Kong (DKII, DK Jr.)
Star Wars pinball (Sega)
-
Remember the excitement you used to get from the coin ops?
This puts a new perspective on it.

"...how is this 12 year old punk beating the **** out of me?"- Nath
Thats when you hip-check him into Mrs. Pacman and steal all his quarters!
-
Spy Hunter was the best, moon patrol was good too.

I think coin-ops are going the way of the dodo. The only games that really grab attention anymore are the Dance Dance Revolution series (got it for xbox, luv it!) and the MOCAP series (Police Trainer, Boxing). Other than those, PC's & consoles really are taking over the gaming market.
I'll make exception to the expensive, yet non-coin-op games.. NASCAR speedways, Battletech, and many of the motion simulator games. Just sucks they tend to come out to about $1/minute. Battletech, on the expert modes, can have a steeper learning curve than AH. Engage, cycle weapons, manage heat, manage generators, watch radar & manuver like crazy, route around damaged systems, all spread across 7 monitors. Definately my kinda game. Terrified to calculate how much I've spent on it over the years.

Guantlet and Guantlet II, spy hunter, and for pinball Firepower it was the first multi ball pinball machine.
I have mame and have gauntlet on it I love playing it again.
-
Every time I walk into an arcade these days, I too end up walking out with my money still in my pocket shaking my head and longing for the good ol days.
I once played Galaga for 40 minutes on one quarter. Love that game. Tobin was another that always had my initials in the top spot.
Can't understand how the arcades stay in business these days.
Chairboy - You can't go wrong with Super Mario Brothers IMO.

Spyhunter !

Well, Gillians @ Katy Mills Mall closed down recently. Gillian's Marqee only has heavy traffic on one game, Derby Owner's Cup (it's 8-player gaming heroin. My best friend & I sat down and played this for 10 hours drinking Margaritas & having lunch AND dinner brought to us.. if we'd gotten up, we'd have lost our spots). Dave & Buster's is still in business because it's a family environment until they kick the kids out at 10pm, and it's more bar/poolhall than arcade really. Most of the Tilt arcades they put in malls go out of business pretty quick. I just don't think a regular arcade can stay in business anymore, unless its a mixed venue like D&B.

Add strippers to D&B and I'd never leave.

Oh man no doubt. I used to work about 5-10 minutes from it on South Post Oak, the Wells Fargo building. Spent many a night there drinking it up with the other techs. The best was dating a girl that worked there, and getting hooked up with a free game card w/ eleventy billion credits on it. I played alot of battletech in those days.
-
In defense of Dave & Buster's (Columbus).....
I went there for lunch today and not only did they have the often-found Ms. Pacman/Galaga combo, but they also had..
Donkey Kong/Donkey Kong Jr/Super Mario Brothers combo
Space Invaders/Qix combo
Centipede/Millipede/Missile Command/Bowling combo
It appears that manufactures are getting smart and are coming out with new combo machines. I may have to start feeding $$ into my D&B card. :D
-
D&B's is pretty nice I haven't been there in awhile though, its go carts for me now :). Most of the games are more I dunno....not the same i guess. Anyone from Colorado can testify to this(cause I don't know if other states have them) Red and Jerry's SUCKS.
Burgertime however is awesome on coleco vision console :aok
-
Turbo and Pengo were pretty good too :)
-
Tempest and Zaxxon

I have never been able to figure out how to get MAME to run on my comp. Would be the bomb if I could.
-
I remember putting in a lot of quarters into Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II Turbo, and Daytona USA.
-
Thanks for the site, Drediock. For me, Tank and BiPlane started the whole computer gaming thing. And then Missile Attack.
And not too long after, wonder of wonders, Air Warrior (free floppy disk shareware -- what's this? what's an internet? what's a server? ... and worst of all, what's local long-distance phone charges?).

Tell me more diablo, does it error,,or...?
If u can play aces, your pc will handle mame no trouble.
have a read over here :)

I've tried off and on for over 5 years and just couldn't figure it out. List the steps that you have taken to get it to work and I wil do the same. Let's say the computer is ready to go, what do I download first and then what do I do after that?
-
Being a poor kid I never had the money to play alot of coin ops till I was posted overseas in 1988. We had a dozen games in the mess and I played rygar warrior and drank paralyzers for hours and hours. By the end of tour most of us could play it for an hour on a quarter.

Run the binary exe from the link, it should extract to a folder of your choosing called Mame32
In the folder is a mame32.exe (icon looks like an arcade cabinet) double click that to run mame.
What you do need first are the original arcade Roms. These are easy to find, and are extremely small files ie. asteroids is 26kb. You can google for MAME roms, or try these sites: Da Mame project (http://www.mameniacs.tk/) (it's in spanish - but click the rom option upper right, and the downloads in english) Rom world (http://www.rom-world.com/dl.php?name=MAME&letter=G) (don't bother voting, the files still d/l and work)
Download the rom zip file (leave unzipped) into the rom folder in your Mame32 folder, run the mame32.exe, click on available games in the mame32 shell - it should list all the working games you've downloaded
ie. (http://www.classicgaming.com/mame32qa/1.png)
- double click that game name and off you go...remember to start most games to hit "3" on your keyboard to put in credits, and 1 or 2 for players..
There are options for joysticks, mouse control (for Missle command etc)

It's a copyright violation to have mame and rom files in the same computer for more than 24 hours.

Not if you own the original ROMs. :p
-
True. Then you wouldn't need Mame would you? :p
-

I also heard that you don't gain any weight from food you eat while standing up.
-
Are you trying to say that the Arcade game rom files differ from music files or movies somehow?
-
No, I'm saying the 24 hours figure sounds kinda like rationalization. Got a source? I always figured it was pretty cut & dry. You either got it or not, the police don't ask how long the material has been on your system.
-
NOTE: In order to run this emulator, you must have the emulator itself, and a copy of the ROM's from the original system. The emulator itself is Freeware. The ROM's are copyrighted by the programmer or the manufacturer. You are only legally entitled to do so if you own the actual game, or a PCB/ROM Cartridge from the game that you are emulating. If you decide to download ROM's to test out an emulator, you must delete the ROM's within 24 hours unless you own the equipment mentioned above.
This quote is found on most mame websites concerning roms.
http://www.backntime.net/Arcade/Mame/FrameMAME.html
I don't know of its legality. But it's there.
-
Sure, but like you said, that's 'just some guy'. Most US copyright law is pretty straight forward and doesn't have little 24 hour clauses (the same way nature doesn't have a 'eating while standing' clause regarding weight loss).
I'd assume that having the ROMs on the machine at any time would be technically in violation, and that people should assume that. That said, there is essentially zero enforcement on this. On a completely unrelated note, I built a MAME controller myself using an I-PAC encoder and parts from Happcontrols.
-
Some buddies and I have been pretty hooked on a new arcade game.. Golden Tee. Most bars around here have it. Nothing like getting a couple pitchers and seeing who can hit the white ball as hard as possible...and I mean litteraly, they have a white "centipede like" ball that you use to control the club.
-
no panic, as long as you emulate the real old games on your pc,
you know this old machines like pac-man or donkey kong i'm
sure no one will hunt you, this machines are 20+ years old and
the creators dont make money today with this machines.
The problem maybe starts if you emulate newer games who are still running
in some arcades today, like golden tee...
...or you start selling roms, doing this you can get in trouble yes.
And btw, playing the games on a pc monitor with keyboard is BS lol
the real feeling comes only with the real controlers and real arcade Monitor.
1999 I build a 2 player mame cabinet (19" Hantarex rotatable monitor for H & V games), this thing is allways the highlight at partys :)
And this days i bought two 37" monitors, building a 2 player
Mega cab (especialy for race/lightgun games). This thing can even show todays PC games, playing
Flat Out in front of the 37" is shocker! hehe
Mame rulez!
