Sudz made a nice change to the ordnance system by adding a new subsystem to it. This allows us to change the configuration of your plane with bomb racks, rocket rails, different gun barrels, etc., according to the ordnance you are carrying. So if you load up a bomb, you get a bomb rack attached to your plane rather than just a bomb floating below your plane. If you don’t take the outer cannons on the 190, then the barrels don’t remain there. If you take the 30mm option, the barrels change to reflect that. Previously, we had to jump through some hoops to do something similar for the rocket rails on the Typhoon and Mosquito and we couldn’t do that for every plane. This system also affects performance with weight and drag changes. Planes will be updated to this new system as we renovate them.

Finally, PB1 rockets have been added to the Fw 190F-8.

Are gondies going to be visible again...finally?  Please reply.

Thanks!

Another little question for Pyro & HTC:

Since ye'r looking at the bombs and pylon stuff, any chance we could get damage model applied to them as well?

By this I mean: If i shoot someone who has a DT slung on his belly and I hit the DT I expect it to burst into flames and that plane to take damage from it (and lose the fuel in the DT tank of course).

If the enemy has a bomb or rockets slung to 'em and I hit the bombs with my guns, id expect it to have a good chance of blowing up.

I ask this because most of the jabo planes I jump end up taking lots of damage from my machine guns and all they need do is nose down and fire their ord before they die. If the fuel/bombs loaded could be detonated then JABO planes would find themselves much more vulnerable and LOTS less inclined to fight with ordenance/DT attached... like in real life you know ;)

as far a bombs blowing up when hit,
how technically accurate is that? was there no arming device? fuze?
when bombers were shot did their payloads often detonante?
i ask because i really have no idea.

the ordnance should at least be disabled if hit though, i should think, if it turns out to be the non exploding variety.

if you get a 20mm or 30mm or a good spray of 50 cal on a bomb it will detonate.

fuel tanks take a few shots before they light up...especially with the 50 cal API ammo.

Ooooooh, just think, shooting that NOE lanctard right in the bombbay with an osti round as he tries to Fun-Nazify your field....

big bang theory?

Bombs were not armor plated, so it was not difficult for ammunition to penatrate them if it hit at the right angle. US bombs were iron casing (not sure how thick) so I would think they could deflect some bullets that didn't hit straight on.

Fuel tanks on the other hand... It's always a big fireball when you see them get hit in gun cam footage. It would be very cool if externals could be shot at and damaged...

What about self-sealing tanks?

Let's say a P-38L equips itself with 10x HVARs and 2x 1k lbs bombs and gets 2 pylons and 2 rocket racks(or did the HVARs use rails?) hanging under him after ordnance is dropped.

Currently, the AH P-38L deck speed is 344mph.

How much speed would the pylons and rack/rails effect?

We're talking about Drop Tanks here. Far as I know, DTs did not have self-sealing technology, they were just tin cans.

or in some cases paper containers!!

Yea that be cool to shoot a DT then watch a plane go BOOOOOMMMMM in your face and you fly threw his guts. Now that be cool.    And i think for bombers like the 17 the bombs had pins in them that keep them from blowing up in flight but don't know if that was used incase one of them fell off the rack or if a bullet hit it. But I don't know.

Saburo Sakai said that the way to take B-17s out was to hit them in the bomb bay.  I don't know if he was right, but that was the Japanese take on it in 1942.

I am always in favor of mor realizm, so I say yes give damage to ordinance and drop tanks.  (Also please put back in night, wind, and weather) Thank you. :D

That may have been more about hitting the area of greatest structural stress rather than igniting the bombs, but I may be mistaken.

I was just rereading the book the other day. From the way its written it seems to me that they were aiming for the bombs

From what I've read the alot of the instant big fireballs were due to hitting the oxygen containers in the airframe.  I'll have to find it again but I think it was a 109 or 190 that was notorious for this because of where the tank was mounted.

Setting external tanks ablaze is spectacular, but generally harmless if the pilot pickles off the tank before the heat does any substantial damage. It's the leaking fuel that's burning.

Detonation of bombs from MG rounds or even 20mm cannon fire was extremely rare. The explosives were not generally sensitive to kinetic energy projectiles. Explosive 20mm cannon rounds could not penetrate the casing.

My regards,

Widewing

Still, how cool would it be to watch it blow, especially to watch the pilot start to freak out :D  Also it would be useful if that pilot's stratagy was to bring a 109 with 50% fuel and a drop tank so he can use the tank to WEP climb to 15k. :aok

I rember picking up some pieces from a german exploded bombs.  It was a long time ago but they looked like 1" thinck cast iron.  Now, given that they were round, I don;t see how anything would penetrate them except a perfect shot.  However, even if penetrated, I dont think they would detonate anyway.
