Title: Custom Authentic Indicators
Post by: Cobra412 on March 27, 2005, 08:24:11 PM
I know HTC is probably doing this already but I'm messing around with making custom indicators for the P-51D. Currently I'm just using HTCs indicator casing but I plan on redoing that at a later date.

Here's an authentic accelerometer markings for the P-51D.  I added a little aging to the glass.

It really adds something.   Nopoop did it to a recent 47 skin he's working on and that looked great too.

I think it does too Oboe.  Just seems odd seeing the same indicators in every aircraft.  I'm waiting for my DVDs to get here from Zeno's warbirds so I can do some more.

I've got a picture of the pilots manual that I found online.  It's got almost all the indicators in it.  Problem is the photos I have of the mustangs console aren't that great.  Before I press on with anymore indicators I want to be sure I'm doing authentic representations of each one.

I know the pointer is incorrect on this one but I didn't find a pic that showed it well enough when I first started it. I also know some of the hash marks are slightly off too. I was just curious if I could make one look fairly realistic. Gonna take a look at how they did the KI84s guages.  So I know where I need alphas and what should be seperated on the guage.

Great work, man! And if you're going to do any for the 109's when they get an update, will you have the indicators in metric? Well, if you decide to do them, that is.

Fruda if I do them they will be as authentic as possible. To be honest I don't even know if they could be used. The indicators I'm doing are all being done using a compass to align all my marks properly so you can get a value for x amount of degrees in travel.

As you can see with the airspeed indicator as you go around the value per degrees changes 3 times. From 0 to 50 each degree equals 10 miles per hour. From 50 to 300 approximately every 9 degrees equals 10 miles per hour. From 300 to 700 every 15 degrees equals 50 miles per hour. I don't know if HTC could or would use this type of setup because it would create more work to get the needle to point correctly as the airspeed increases or decreases.

Either way I'll continue doing the P-51D indicators just for fun. I know that when I get to the fuel, oil and temp indicator the lines may be to small to read but who knows. The one indicator contains all three indicating systems. I think with adding the authentic range marks (Red, Yellow, Green and white) it wouldn't make it such a big deal considering you would only be referencing the area of color that the needle is in opposed to looking at the needle and comparing it to the hash marks.

SkyChimp they aren't completely ready for use. I still have to see if they will work.

I guess I should have done that with the first indicator before I went running to the next one. I think I'll try the Compass first without the waypoint pointer and just a needle. I think I have to rename my compass to RCOMPASS. I'll have to refer to the ingame shots to see what needle goes with what indicator. Once I've got that then I'll rename my needle and needle alpha. Then I'll put it in my 412th Mustang skin folder and try it out offline.

Anyway, I'm almost done with the manifold pressure indicator.

Updated Photos. G10 I was messing around with from the past. The swastika is only on there to be historically accurate. It will be removed once I get around to finishing the skin.

And the indicator installed into the G10 just for testing purposes. I didn't zoom in on this at all. This is from the default head position. I'm running my resolution at 1024x768 in the game. There is no resizing of the photo I just cropped some of the top off of it. The width is still 1024 and the height  is now 500 due to the area I removed from the top.

Yeah Zorstorer unfortunately the indicator isn't calibrated to the current airspeed values. If it were that would show up near the yellow area. I honestly don't know if it could even be calibrated properly.

I've been doing some research on the cockpit indicators of the American aircraft.  I've found that many of the indicators used crossed from one airframe to the next. Which in the end will be nice because I won't have to do every planes indicator twice. The ones that cross will have minor changes for their colored range marks.
